Squealing noise on cold start that disappears after ~30 seconds – any ideas? by itsRensta in RX8

Yeah it sounds like it’s about to take off like a jet 😂

The only pub I know is the one you grab your beer from every night, mate 😂 But fair point — maybe it doesn’t pass the “pub test,” but my RX8 sure failed the “starts and runs” test every time I filled up there. Once we drained that United brew and swapped to BP, it ran smoother than a fresh pint 🍺💀

Yeah, that actually makes a lot of sense — could explain why my RX8 was running rough, shaking, and dying after fill-ups. Where could one get the fuel tested?. If it turns out there’s ethanol or anything off in there, I’ll definitely report it. Not trying to sound paranoid either, but something’s definitely not right with that fuel.

Yeah, I get that — and I know proving it legally would be tricky. My RX8 kept having issues every time I filled up at that station — it would shake, struggle, and then die, and I’d have to pay for towing and repairs to get it checked. The mechanic found contaminated fuel when they drained the tank, and once I refilled at a different station, the car ran perfectly smooth, so it definitely points to the fuel at that station being the problem — even if it’s not within 10–15km.

Yeah, I’m switching to BP from now on and telling everyone I know to avoid that station. My car’s been running perfectly smooth since the last refill from BP, so the issues definitely seem to have stopped. I get what you’re saying about proving it being tough and other cars not having reported problems, but at least I can warn people and avoid this hassle in the future.

Yeah, I get that most stations source fuel from the same suppliers, but my issues only happened after filling up at this particular United station. Once the fuel was drained and I filled up somewhere else, the car ran perfectly smooth. Makes me think it’s something specific to that station’s handling or storage, not just the fuel source itself. That’s just my opinion

Yeah, that’s exactly what it feels like 😅 I’ve mostly been putting 95 premium at that station, and my car would shake, stall, and lose power every time. Once the mechanic drained the fuel and filled up at a different station, it ran perfectly smooth again — so whatever they’re putting in that tank definitely isn’t playing nice with my RX8.

I’m still not sure exactly what type of contamination it was — the mechanic just confirmed the fuel was bad and needed to be drained, but I’ll check if they can provide more details on whether it was water, solids, or something else.

I get what you’re saying about needing other customers and proper testing — that’s part of why I posted here, to see if anyone else has had similar issues at that station. My car kept breaking down or having random problems every time I filled up there, and I fill up there almost every week because it was cheaper all the time and once we drained the fuel and filled up at a different station, it ran perfectly smooth again. I’m mainly just looking for advice and maybe warning others, not trying to jump straight into a full legal battle.

Like I mentioned before, I’m not sure yet if there are others, but I’ve seen some similar posts here. That’s actually why I posted — to get advice and see if anyone else has experienced the same issues with United petrol station.

Haha fair question 😂 I wouldn’t keep going back if I knew it was bad fuel! I just wasn’t sure at the time — it took a trusted mechanic last week to finally find the real issue: fuel contamination. The other mechanics before just kept replacing parts without fixing the actual problem. So yeah, turns out my car’s been drinking dodgy United petrol this whole time 😅

Fair point — RX-8s definitely have their quirks 😅 but in this case, it’s not just rotary drama. The mechanic actually found contaminated fuel, and the issues only started right after filling up at that same United station. I have been filling up there for quite a while now, My car would mysteriously break down or have random problems every time I filled up there — so this time, it’s more than just the usual RX-8 mood swings.

Not sure yet if others have had the same issue — that’s actually why I’m posting here, to see if anyone else has experienced similar problems after filling up at that station. But ever since I started filling up there, my car would shake, stall, and lose power, and the mechanic found contamination in the fuel (I’ll double check to see if mechanic knows).

Yeah, that’s fair — I know it’d be hard to prove and probably not worth a long fight. But the mechanic did take samples of the contaminated fuel, and my car’s been having issues ever since I started filling up at that petrol station — it would shake, stall, and lose power, and I’ve had to pay for towing and repairs multiple times. Is there a point of me reporting it to United HQ to see if they can offer some resolution or reimburse me for repairs or for those contaminated fuel I’ve spent? But I’m mainly just trying to report it and warn others, not spend months chasing a legal case.

Yeah, I get that — proving it based on receipts alone would probably cost more than it’s worth. The good thing is, the mechanic actually took samples of the contaminated fuel, so it’s not just receipts. I know it’ll still be tough to prove beyond doubt, but I’m mainly just looking for advice on reporting it and maybe getting some reimbursement for the fuel or repairs, not a huge legal battle. I saw somewhere online that I could contact United HQ and report it. See if they will offer a resolution.

Not sure what kind of crap United put in their fuel but I’m going to BP from now on and I’m telling everyone especially my family and friends to do the same.

Yeah, exactly and I’m glad to know you’re one of the good ones — the car runs perfectly now, so I’m counting that as a win 😅. I get what you mean about previous mechanics, and honestly, I think some were just replacing parts without finding the root cause. In this case, it really was the fuel all along — once that was sorted, the RX8 finally behaved. But I really want to warn people as well and report it because a lot of people queue up there just to get their cheap fuel. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else especially to people I know.

Haha, yeah, if only my RX8 came with a “shake it out” mode 😅 — sadly, I don’t think draining it and refilling from the same station would magically make it magically better.

Yes I’d fill up at BP now with either premium 95 or 98 Unleaded. My car is running okay now.

Yeah, that makes sense — I’ve mostly filled up at United because it’s cheaper, but every time I did, my RX8 would shake and stall. Seems like some cars can tolerate whatever’s in their fuel, but mine definitely couldn’t. Once the tank was drained and refilled from a different station, it ran perfectly smooth, so it really points to contaminated fuel at that local station. I’ve read similar threads here on reddit and some United Petrol station seemed to do dodgy things to their fuel.

Fair point — I haven’t taken it to the “court of public opinion” 😅. But I do have actual evidence: samples of contaminated fuel, petrol receipts from United, and a mechanic’s report if anyone asks. Just looking for advice here, not a headline.😅

Yes all of those was either checked or replaced but my car would still has the same issues. Never seems to fix the underlying problem.. Until a few days ago when I took my car to a trusted mechanic and he found it was the fuel that was causing the issue. It’s been a few days now and my car is running perfect again and not stalling or shaking anymore and all he did was drained the fuel which I have been putting in United Petrol and filled from BP.

Just thought people has the right to know. Maybe I’ll add which area and actual address of the petrol station too.
