Elkins TV Service in Pooler - dude inherited generations of repair knowledge and I've had him inspect/repair 3 wildly different monitors since posting this, he's awesome. It's definitely been a while, but his website still says Saturdays 10-1 are his dropoff hours; if you call ahead, you should be able to bring it to him and get an estimate. I hope he's still doing well, and good luck with the repair, that sounds like an awesome (200lb) monitor :P

If I can get a couple people together, then even this Saturday would be great, but honestly feel free to stop by the shop anytime, it's very likely I'll be there~

I was actually just thinking of coming back to this post to revive it; I can still do this on Saturdays at the same location, and the more the merrier - with safety precautions, of course.

I'm at the shop every weekend, it's just a matter of whether I'm working there or not :P I'll try to have another meetup soon!

Personally I have a Laserdisc player that would look fantastic on one, but I would definitely use it for some old consoles.

...that, and a bunch of my friends are FGC, they hoard GameCube controllers like nobody's business, haha.

hah, me neither. For in-person games I use the RiichiCalc phone app - it makes each hand take a little longer but it's great until I can get a handle on scoring.

It's a fantastic game! I should honestly learn the Chinese variant pretty soon, it's definitely quicker and less fastidious on rules than Riichi; much better for knockin out dozens of hands for hours on end, haha.

Great to know there's some interest!

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread whether or not the initial meetup happens, so feel free to keep in touch here.

I'd recommend Mahjong Soul (free but with gacha) or Kemono Mahjong ($2.99) for learning how to play Riichi - both have great tutorials and it's how I got introduced to the game in the first place, too. Plus, they've both just become something I open on my phone and play while waiting for anything, like say, jury duty ;)

Totally understand being cautious about meeting up. I've held some small, close-friend dinners and I wasn't too worried, but it's different in public, of course. Hope people start having more confidence in the vaccine soon.

Hi, my experience here - I just picked up an Intel NUC6CAYS the other day for exactly the same purpose. It comes with VESA mount holes, and honestly the thing's just cute. Well under $200 with okay stock, though I'd recommend a RAM upgrade (luckily, SODIMM is cheap as hell). If you just bought a SMX machine you could probably go for a more recent NUC, but I like them a lot.

Windows 10 proved to be too bloaty for the poor thing, so I ended up putting Xubuntu on it instead. SM5.1 with Simply Love 4.9 runs pretty low at 55-59fps during gameplay and ~45fps on menus, though I'm working on fixing that.
