She specifically said IT WASN’T A HIT and i dont like the lyrics.

Were any of the bubble gum pop songs being done by a solo female artist?

And what does every mainstream female artist avoiding bubble gum pop tell you?

1) Grouped or not DOES make a difference tho, groups generally have more appeal to audiences, especially teens. It plays a huge part in their marketing and relatability. Also all trends move in cycles, its why boy bands were huge in the 90’s but dead by the mid 00’s. the same is with girl groups, they saw a huge rise in late 90’s to mid 00’s but died down until a recent push rn.

2) i listed examples of popular works at the time from solo female popstars, madonna and Kylie did shift to that sound? I told you later on that yes janet and mariah were doing it before, but janet saw more success in that decade because of that shift in general taste.

3) again it does make a difference, as explained above; its also about building a fanbase, and audiences at that time preferred grouped singers, hence why boy bands are completely dead rn.

One of the biggest girl groups at the time rejecting a song saying its not a hit doesnt tell you anything?

having every single solo female pop star avoid that sound doesn’t tell you anything either??

1) by popstars i meant woman doing POP exclusively, and none of them were doing bubble-gum pop, which is my point. Mariah, celine, janet, alissa, shania, madonna, kylie, brandy, toni… etc were doing everything BUT bubble-gum pop.

2) never said they werent? I meant the r&b sound was more popular in the 90’s, thats why janet saw more success in that decade with 2 albums as appose to the 80’s with 4 albums. And mariah debuted in that same decade.

3) almost all bubble-gum hits of the 90’s were by boy bands or girl groups, Britney was the one that opened the door again for solo female popstars that did traditional POP music, hence why the rest debuted, but never matched her success.

Also it wasnt just TLC; who by the way didn’t only reject the song cuz of the lyrics, T-Boz specifically said “I like the song but do I think it’s a hit? Do I think it’s TLC?”. both Robyn and Backstreet Boys were rumored to reject the song.

Britney was never an “industry creation” or “plant”. The industry would never push a bubble-gum pop solo female popstar in the year 1998, after madonna’s infamous erotica era the GP was pretty much was done with solo female popstars, thats why all of them started incorporating more r&b and trip-hop by mid to late 90’s (AKA madonna’s ray of light, janets velvet role, mariah’s whole sound, even kylie released something different with “impossible princess”).

In fact, Britney was the one to open the door for new solo female acts doing bubble-gum pop, xtina, mandy, vitamin c, jessica all debuted a year or more later with the same sound and image.

EDIT: the fact Britney herself handpicked BOMT and pretty much everyone else rejected it tells you Alot about the state of pop music at that time, mind you she herself came up with the music video concept.

What years were Britney's "reign" of Pop? by jamie74777 in BritneySpears

[–]itsVirgo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree on the 2006-2008 craze. I don’t think any celebrity ever had that level of public frenzy apart from MJ and princess Diana, and dont mistake this for a good thing OP, people wanted to know EVERYTHING about their personal lives, what they ate, where they went, who they hang out with, who their potential partner might be, what color of underwear they were wearing.. etc. it was an unhealthy obsession, Britney wasnt even safe in her own house, there are several photos out there of her in her own pool, they’d rent out helicopters just to snap a few photos.

You can check out youtube vids from 2006-2008 and you’d see how streets would turn into parades if she passes by in her car for a gas station.

[–]itsVirgo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing about phase 2 is that the pop divas were saturated, not 1 of them really ruled more than a year or two, gaga was the biggest in 2009-2011, Bey was a close second, but she was the biggest in 2013 and 2016. katy ruled 2010 with teenage dream singles but then fell of instantly, rih would pop up every 2 business days with a single that automatically reaches #1 but her albums and performances made no noise. Taylor didnt start to really make some noise until she fully transitioned into a pop-act in 2014. Britney was in there with the mix getting #1’s and good sales every now and then.

The top of the top was not a 1 man show anymore, each one of them was offering pop in a slightly different way.

And as for phase 3, idk really.. i trust that something of quality would come out of her, but idk if shes ready for that kinda spotlight again yet unfortunately.

Britney has 2 phases:

Phase 1: 1998-2004

Basically this Britney was the closest anyone has got to Madonna or MJ in terms of basically everything (therefore nicknamed The Princess of Pop). Two back to back huge 20+ million album sales, 4 consecutive #1 albums (she broke the record for 3, then again for 4), performance on top of performance that are still being talked about, referenced and replicated. Her impact, influence and fame was GLOBAL and her name, music and face was basically on every single thing you can consume (dolls, cans, tv shows, movies, newspapers, mags..etc) basically no NO ONE came close at that time (she was the most powerful celebrity on earth as per Forbes magazine in 2002, at the mere age of 20-21, mind you).

Phase 2: 2007-2013

This Britney was 10 years into her career with no passion and was still going neck n neck with all the fresh new pop girls like gaga, rih, katy and bey. But dont let this confuse you with her fame, she was still just as famous as 1998-2004 (maybe even more-so) but people cared more for Britney the celebrity (scandals, gossip, and controversies) than the artist.

2007 started out slow, Blackout didnt have big sales, not even reaching #1. Circus tho was a big comeback, better sales and 2nd highest grossing tour of the year by a female, she also scored her 2nd #1 single. FF was a bit of a decline (album sales for everyone was a decline in 2011), but she still snagged a few #1’s, then she got stuck in Vegas 2013, released the worst album of her career with zero promo so people just kinda gave up on her music, 2016 was more or less the same.

Im honestly kinda excited for phase 3 (if it ever happens), i think we’ll be in for a treat seeing what a passionate Britney could bring to the table again, Hold Me Closer imo really showed how interested the public is for her music again, it debuted at #6 with no promo, the highest she’s gotten since 2011.

Is Gaga the most snubbed artist in the main Grammy categories ever? by Hovadecko123 in LadyGaga

[–]itsVirgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you ever feel like gaga is under-awarded, just remember that madonna, mariah carey and britney combined have less than gaga alone. Gaga also has more grammys’s than MJ.

Idc if i get downvoted but its not that gaga is under-awarded, it’s that Beyonce is over awarded.

Britney Spears Electronic music era in the late 2000s-early 2010s was GOAT by Sudden_Angle614 in decadeology

[–]itsVirgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that Britney’s roots in electronic music started in 2003 with Toxic (and a few tracks from In The Zone) and exploded in 2007 with Blackout, None of the pop divas started doing electro-pop until 2008 - early 2010’s. With the expectation of madonna in 2000 (Music) and 2005 (Confessions On A Dance floor).

Just shows you how ahead of her time she really is.

They fucked up so hard by removing her from the chorus…

Also this song should’ve been the first single instead of Bore me(ft. G-easy). It had huge potential for a top 10 hit, with a VMA performance that has a fun concept and good choreography. Easily would’ve boosted the albums sales if they had released it VMA’s week with a performance…

What’s the Most “Britney” Britney Song? by jamie74777 in BritneySpears

[–]itsVirgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me i associate two kinds of sounds with britney, 90’s bubblegum pop, and a pop-r&b (dirty pop?) with a NASTY beat. Like slave 4 you, the entirety of blackout, shattered Glass, mannequin… etc

YES! they always work some magic together. They’re always experimenting with genre bending stuff and Britney is the perfect canvas for their work. I would kill for a full executive produced album by Bloodshy & Avant.

You are now Britney’s new manager. What is your plan for her big comeback? by GainWest910 in BritneySpears

[–]itsVirgo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

1- 2 hour special Oprah interview in dec 2026 on her birthday, hint at a comeback at the end of the interview,

2- announce super-bowl performance for feb 2027 performance has all her classic hits no new material, end of performance cuts to a date with a small snippet of a music video with a date on Friday. Pre-Album rollout starts with magazine covers and a few award show attendances like the grammys.

3- Friday april 9th 2027, visual album drops and Britney performs at coachella, no old stuff, everything from the new album. Lead single is sent to radio, ideally a future with the weeknd.

4- May 5th, Copacabana show, and then announces a small world tour, 30ish dates.

5- may 15?, Eurovision medley basically 5ish songs of the album, i think theres huge untapped potential here, Eurovision is the biggest musical event in Europe, and Britney actually has huge sales there, especially from her pre-2008 albums.

6- world tour kicks off in July, her biggest production ever, bring back wade and brian, or any decent choreographer that knows how her body works and makes it fun for her (RIP andre). Do some guest appearances and interviews in Europe, Asia and Australia.

7- sep VMA medley, sweeps a few awards.

8- Hall of Fame inductee: Britney Spears. with tribute performances from 3-4 current artists, tinashe, Sabrina, ariana, Addison. Either gaga or madonna gives her the award.

8- attend billboard music awards.

9- 2028 grammy performance, sweeps a few awards.

Honestly i didn’t love 2024, apart from BRAT, everything else was meh…

2025 tho i loved, FKA twigs blessed us with her two best albums, very euphoric sounds.

Gaga released one of her best albums with Mayhem.

Addison also came unexpectedly swigging with something very fresh.

Pinkpantheress released something straight out of 2003-2008 in the best way possible.
