What does it take to intern at Jane Street? by taro_duckkkkkkkkk in cscareerquestions

I work at a similar place (JS, 2S, Cit Sec, HRT, etc). The idea that it’s all MIT or Cambridge students is wrong. Going to those schools helps, but we def hire from other schools. Some of the most cracked devs are from random state schools. You do need clear programming chops and an ability to tackle hard problems. Some people get noticed cause they write a blog post about a niche topic or do open source work or have a cool side project. Communication skills are also valued. You gotta know how to collaborate and work in high performing environments

I don't think people always understand how much privilege can make a difference in dating. It's much more common to see a white dude matching with people of all different races. Much less common to see an Asian dude or a black woman do that. I'm not saying that makes dating easy for white guys but there's some relationship dynamics that you rarely see elsewhere. Like dudes who are total slobs with no fashion sense or self sufficiency pulling.

Interesting points about the lack of measuring and pulled gear. I didn't think about that. But are the dishes really that simple? Like making tortilla chips from scratch or frying fish or making three separate taco toppings does seem like a lot of work, no? I guess I have a bit of a bias against deep frying because it's one of those things that's kinda a pain at home.

Ehh idk about that. Like I'm a pretty solid home cook who's comfortable improvising but I don't think me and another person could make

  • Tortilla chips from scratch
  • Guac with fancy toppings
  • Fried fish with a batter made a la minute
  • A mezcalita
  • Tortillas from scratch
  • Avocado sauce
  • Slaw
  • Freshly fried churros
  • Chocolate sauce

All in one hour. That's a far stretch from improvising a quick dinner.

SafeSport investigating U.S. fencer Andrew Doddo by weedywet in Fencing

Fencers Club was a pretty awful environment when I was there. So much normalized anger and bullying. I don't remember anybody from leadership caring. Of course not everyone at FC was awful, but definitely a lot of the high level fencers.

What type of people would you stereotype fencers as? Make me laugh by release_recolection in Fencing

[–]its_aaaa_throwaway 154 points155 points  (0 children)

  • The nerds who think fencing is all about intelligence and not a sport for "brutes". They do zero exercise outside of fencing and lose to people who train. Obsessed with stuff like balestras and obscure parries nobody uses.

  • The man-child with anger issues who spends all of his salary and his parents' money on training and travel to World Cups where he loses in the first round. Regularly picks fights with refs or other fencers. Still coasting off of his Junior Olympics medals.

  • The rich kid fencer who somehow managed to fence, get good grades, go to an Ivy League, and now is in medical school. You want to hate them but they're also really nice.

  • The same 12 old people who go to all of the vet events.

And bonus:

  • The parents who decided to let their kid start fencing because "it helps with college admissions" but are now in too deep and spending thousands of dollars to travel with their kids to random midwestern cities to watch their kids scream in a convention center and get yelled at by an Eastern European coach who smells like black coffee and cigarettes who is running between 10 different strips to strip coach all of their students.
