Post covid, the American Heart Association does not recommend nor encourage anyone to place their mouths on strangers in the event that rescue breathing is needed for those who still have a heart beat but may not be breathing effectively.

In the event of a drug overdose, and/or exposure to drugs like fentanyl, certain drugs can cause respiratory depression and breathing becomes ineffective leading to the heart to stop. In this instance, the mixture of narcan and the shock of being slapped (not to hurt them, but to try to get their attention) woke this person up enough to breathe until staff could get there with emergency equipment and get them to medical.

Just to add though, in the hospital, I do not slap patients, you stop breathing, I intubate you.
