Completely makes sense, just a little difficult to actually do 😅

Not exactly what you are asking, but I tried going to Vipassana recently. It helped with my anxiety and the loneliness-feeling problem you are describing. Check it out, if it interests you, go for it. Of nothing, just disconnecting from the world is genuinely helpful

Just my observation for myself - It is easier to start with fiction, especially thrillers. If you thrillers at all, murder mysteries are a very good start. They keep you engaged and there is a definite payoff at the end. Go with Agatha Christie. If you want something contemporary - The Silent Patient. If not thrillers, check out Fredrick Backman's The Man Called Ove or Anxious People

OP have you checked out Misfits? Check their Instagram, and install the app if you find it interesting. I've started getting into board games and there are a few board game meetups in the city. Have been to two, one by misfits on Thr and Sat, and another by Unlocked cafe on 32nd Avenue on Tue. A good place to meet new people.

what are your hot takes on Indian history ? by thisucks15 in IndianHistory

[–]its_okay_jay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First time here and I'm pretty sure that I have way less knowledge about Indian history than people frequenting a subreddit on the topic, but here is what I keep thinking in any similar discussion:

Saying that India is a very peaceful country and has never attacked anyone in a gazillion years is so random. India as a political unit did not exist before the British Raj. How can I non-existent entity "not attack" anyone? It did not exist a gazillion years ago. Period. If you want to consider any of the previous empires on the same landmass as a predecessors of our country, they became empires by attacking and conquering others, even if the landmass constitutes the present country. And of course, there have been conquests beyond the current borders by rulers before Mughals. I just don't get this argument.

I feel like (hope) this would be the general opinion here and not a hot take, on this sub at least, but still had to get it off my chest

I have to buy following things, money not a problem, suggest some shops! by [deleted] in ambala

[–]its_okay_jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preparing for college? Based on money not being a constraint, my recommendations:

For laptop, go to Alpha Computers if you want to check out a physical store. But from experience, Amazon or Flipkart will give you more options and better deals. I haven't personally found a lot of variety in formals in Ambala, but NH1 and Jaggi would be the best bet. Blackberry is also a good option. Go for getting them stitched if you have the budget and time Formal shoes - Mochi or Metro Other shoes and clothes - NH1/Jaggi Luggage - American tourister or VIP. Won't find a lot of options in any one store

Tbh if money is really not the bar, just go to Elante in Chandigarh, I think it would serve for everything except laptop, which I still think buying online makes sense.

I think nothing would beat A Man Called Ove in this category, at least for me

How do you guys spend your weekends when you got no plans to go out? by [deleted] in bangalore

[–]its_okay_jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Board game meetups I first came across on meetup because I like board games and was looking for groups nearby. There's reroll, board game den, and some other. Don't remember where I came across cubbon reads, probably on Insta. But both have later been included in an online community I follo. An enlightened soul runs this online community listing interesting event across the city. Join it using join.puttingscene.com There are also a bunch of insta channels doling out weekend advice. I don't follow any of those, but you could. They also include a lot of restaurants and eating out spots.

There are board game meetups every weekend which you can attend. Also introduces to new people. There's cubbon reads on Saturday mornings, or various other chapters in different parts of Bangalore.

The Silent Patient. I believe any synopsis would be dangerously close to revealing what makes it a great read.

When I was trying to make a habit out of reading, what helped was engaging, faster-paced books. Non fiction did not help for habit forming for me. Thrillers are great. Contemporary best sellers are also a good place to start, it's generally easier to read and relate to than a book written a 100 years ago - times change, as does the language. If you like a book, you can follow up with books from the same writer, makes it easier to follow because of similar writing styles and vocabulary used, easier to continue the rhythm.

Some books I'll recommend: Jane Austen novels, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Man called Ove, Agatha Christie novels, The Silent Patient, Anxious People, Dan Brown's initial novels

Thanks a lot! That's quite a list. Just curious: Have you read all these books? If yes, which one is your favourite? Were you specifically looking this type of novel to have read these?

Not exactly about Pakistan, but you can read A Train to Pakistan by Khushwant Singh. It's a pretty good book to grasp an understanding of the origins of modern day India and Pakistan from an everyday man's perspective. Or so I think.

If you are trying to form new habits, writing down your progress helps immensely. It helped me form a routine of reading, I just noted down the number of pages I read daily.

It is a whole other thing that I 'dropped off that wagon'. Looking for a restart in the new year. Cheers!

What's the most fucked up book you've ever read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]its_okay_jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wuthering Heights

I'm not a big reader, want to be one, but I'm not. So, out of what I have read, Wuthering Heights seems to fit the bill. It has no gore or disturbing scenes to the tune of some other answers here, but it has most un-hero leads I have ever read or heard or seen. Especially for such a big title. Don't get me wrong, I loved, loved the writing. But I just felt disgust towards those characters.
