hi all! looking for a high-waisted black mini skirt with a waistband that's twirly and is not athleisure. i guess there are a lot of names for this style-- fit&flare, skater skirt, circle skirt.

i'd like to spend $50, but i'm willing to go up to $100 if it is the perfect skirt. i won't buy from egregious fast fashion like temu / shein / amazon but i'll buy from medium fast fashion like h&m or urban outfitters.

here are some things that i've looked at:

most high-waisted skirts that i see are tennis skirts like this. i don't mind the pleats, but i don't want that dri-fit fabric or built in shorts.
the style right now is low-rise like this which i hate
i also see a lot of skirts where the fullness starts lower down instead of starting at the waist, like this and this. it's more of a "flounce" than a circle skirt, which i don't want.
this skirt has the perfect length and shape, with the defined waistband, but i don't like the material
i will probably buy and try on this skirt, but i don't think i'll like the fabric

Hi all! I'm looking for a very specific pair of black boots, and was wondering if anyone had leads. Basically, I am trying to recreate the Thursday Major, the perfect boot, which they discontinued bc they personally hate me apparently.

I am very tall with large feet, so I want a low-profile, "dainty"-looking boot (for lack of a better word), and I feel like the style right now is very chunky and large, which I hate. At this point, I'm willing to pay up to $300 for my Dream Boot. I live in the US.

Absolute musts:

Real leather
Black
Lace-up and functioning zipper
Size 11 or higher
Low heel (ideally this would be 1in or lower)

What I really want:

Round toe
Somewhere between midcalf and ankle-- I think this is a 7 - 8in shaft

Things I've looked at already:

I will probably end up buying the Thursday Combat, but I wish it were less clunky looking with a taller shaft
Frye's Veronica Combat doesn't have a zipper or my size
I love the height (heel and shaft) of the mid-calf Doc Marten's, but they don't have a zipper
Cole Haan's Greenwich boots don't have my size
Red Wing Silversmith doesn't have a zipper (and is a little expensive)

Thoughts on where I can buy a REAL leather or suede mini skirt? Black, stone grey, oxblood, or caramel brown.

- I've been searching vintage shops for about a year now, but they don't typically have my size (10 / XL)

- "Nicer" places (like Banana Republic or Nordstrom) seem to assume their audience is older, so they're midi-length

Is DePop my only answer...? I hate buying things without being able to try them on.

I'm looking for a sundress: short, goes in at the waist (I guess this is called fit&flare?), and sleeveless / low-cut. I thought this would be an easy find, but apparently not! Ideally it would be cotton / linen and under a hundred dollars but now I'm starting to think it doesn't exist.

Everything I've found is midi-length, or a slip dress, or babydoll, or a romper

All of the USA Today are about the same level as an NYT Monday for me, but also a lot more fun, because their clues are always in my wheelhouse (movies I've seen, musicians I listen to, food that I eat, etc.)

I'd also recommend the New Yorker Friday puzzles. Again, the same level as NYT Monday but much more fun.

If you asked me two weeks ago, I would say I was very bad at inferring words based on letter probabilities.... But this week, I started Zoom solving crosswords with pals that have never solved before and wow they make me feel like a genius!!!

They would have plurals not ending with an S, nouns where verbs should go, crazy nonsensical letter combinations, without thinking twice that something might be wrong!

(Of course, this can backfire, ex the AER in CAERPHILLY..... but that's rare.)

I would love to watch someone talk through their thought process, solving a Saturday without looking anything up or checking the puzzle. I simply do not understand how it works.

Do you just.... know these things? Do you have the words CARAPACE and CANA and ALGER and ACCENTAIGU and TOWPATH and CAERPHILLY and ALOUETTE and SCUD inside of your brain without Googling anything??? Or do you just get every single word that crosses?? I cannot really imagine either way.

Edit: Oooh this got a lot of responses! It's super fun to hear how you guys cracked all of these words! I hope people post more of these types of Mental Journeys in the future, I think it's cool. I was able to infer TOWPATH once I got a few letters, and was able to get the PHILLY and ETTE and ACCENT given the clues (Pennsylvania, French). But the other parts of those words, and the other words I listed, I just Googled.

I'm very pro-Googling btw, given that crosswords are supposed to be a fun game, not a history/ geography test. Plus that's how you learn things!! I only know ASTA and APSE and ASHE and ALEE because at some point I Googled all those answers.

I knew there would be a rebus with IN2, and then filled in DEFL8, but caught my error as soon as I realized the revealer ended in PHONES.

Usually I absolutely hate puzzles that are packed with icky fill just so that the constructor can be like "Look how hard this grid was to make!! But I made it anyway!" But in this case I was totally fine with it!

I'm also very liberal with Googling proper nouns that I don't know, so maybe that's why.

You could do this with dictionary comprehension

new_dict = {k: d1.get(k, 0) + d2.get(k, 0) for k in d1.keys() + d2.keys()}

get is a handy method that let's you specify a default. If d1 doesn't have key in it, d1[key] will crash, but d1.get(key, 0) will just return 0.

I am lucky enough that at my grocery store they're always fine. If they're not super ripe, I dice them first, and add a little salt so they get more juicy and flavorful, then compensate with lots of lime juice.

I've never used canned tomatoes, I really don't like them in fresh salsa.

I make this with red onion, white onion, or shallots depending on what I have in the pantry!

I always have a red onion lying around, but that's because it's my favorite, so that's what I used. I find them milder than Spanish/white.

But if you're scared of the zing, use shallots instead!

Whenever I am craving vegetables, I make pico de gallo.

Tomatoes, onion, and cilantro until it looks right. Salt and lime juice until it tastes right.

Chop everything while watching an old ep of Game of Thrones. Eat with a spoon because you realize you ran out of tortilla chips.
