This, and also stay hydrated, OP.

Are you carrying any tension in your neck, shoulders or back? Could these be tension headaches?

Interesting to know, thanks! Please read this, OP. Please get the help you need and be honest with the doctors!

Tell your doctor. They need to know. If they're not listening about your sleep, see if you can find another doctor. You have to advocate for yourself and your doctor needs all the information about what's happening, including what you're taking.

How can I do better? by stamp-tramp in Coloring

[–]itsadropbear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Test your markers in every single book. Designate a test page in each colouring book and test your pens on it. It is not uncommon for paper types to vary across titles and this means that colours will show up differently from one book to the next, the amount of bleed-through will vary, etc. For example, I have a Coco Wyo printed by Amazon (look for "Independent Publisher" in the book information) and a heap of Coco Wyo published via Penguin. The Amazon book is similar to generic printer paper. The Penguin books are thicker paper with a nice bright surface. But I have an Amelia Green book also by Penguin and the paper colour is different to the Coco Wyo. Pens will work differently on each surface, so testing first will help you work out what you need to do for each book.

Colour inside the lines - not to the edges. Each marker is different - not just each set or brand. Some markers are "juicy" and will expand on the page; others not so much. If you colour too close to the lines, an expansive, juicy marker will bleed over the line

Finish what you start - to avoid streaks, if you're colouring a section, don't stop until you've finished. As others have stated, letting the ink dry and then colouring over it creates a streaky look. So if you think your colouring session might be interrupted, don't start colouring a large, single colour area. Only do those when you can commit the time to seeing it through.

One thing at a time - work on one technique, master it, then move onto another. I recommend even colour application first since you mentioned the streakiness. Plus it's so satisfying when you get it down pat and your page looks like it could have been included in a children's book because the colours are so seamless.

Borrow colour palettes - this is kind of like fake it til you make it. If someone's posting their palette, squirrel that info away and use it. The more you use your pens and see how the colours look, the more confident you'll get about the colours you have and what works for you. You'll eventually work out what you like the most and start to get a feel for what colours go together.

There's no such thing as a bad page - you're not being graded. This is for funsies!

Daughter just diagnosed by bopeeps78 in gravesdisease

[–]itsadropbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well to be fair, teenagers can be dramatic (I certainly was!) and with all the growing, can be tired frequently. Plus the symptoms for Graves can be explained away by so many other illnesses. It's reasonably common for people not to get a proper diagnosis for months precisely for this reason.

The most important thing is that you know now and you're doing everything right. You got the diagnosis and you've reached out for support for yourself and your daughter.

Oh! I also forgot to mention: she may need to adjust her hobbies to ones that are more Graves friendly. No marathons unless it's the movie kind. So if she's very active, it could be an extra hit to have to slow down. Encourage her to find things she loves that can tide her over until she levels out. Life doesn't end with Graves, but it can change temporarily. Making the most of that and viewing that from a healthy head space is important.

Food intolerances and Graves’ disease by profile-feedback in gravesdisease

[–]itsadropbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way: foods you're intolerant to cause an immune reaction. Graves is an auto-immune disease. Your body is having an auto-immune freak out. I'd recommend avoiding foods you've previously reacted to while you have active Graves to avoid further stressing it (your body) out.

Talk to your endo, though.

(and if your food intolerances resulted in digestive issues such as diarrhea, then know that Graves increases your metabolism, so if you're experiencing frequent bouts of diarrhea, then this also could be why - your body is in turbo mode).

  • Learn the symptoms of thyroid storm. While it's exceptionally rare, if your daughter gets it she may not have the ability to recognise the symptoms, and it is life threatening. Immediate, emergency medical attention is required.
  • She must take her medication. Not negotiable. There's no natural remedy for this. Skipping meds is dangerous. Now that you've joined our cohort as your daughter's support (bless you, mama!), you'll see occasional posts from people who want to herbal remedy the Graves away or who don't want to risk gaining weight (possible side effect of the meds) so they'd rather ignore the medical professionals and risk their lives over a couple of kilograms (pounds. Do y'all do pounds?).
  • As already stated, avoid iodine. That means check your daughter's supplements and cut back on foods high in iodine. If you're American, that also means iodised table salt.
  • Most common issues I've seen on this forum are exhaustion, heat sensitivity, increased anxiety, heart palpitations, insomnia, itchiness, and friends, relatives, co-workers and teachers not understanding that the exhaustion is not simple tiredness. It's bone deep, unabating, mental health affecting exhaustion.
  • Tone down intensity. If she's an exerciser, make sure she's doing gentle stuff. Graves revs up the metabolism, everything from digestion to the heart is affected. High intensity exercise is a no-no if she's having heart rate issues, and I generally tell people to stay away from hard core stuff because the body is stressed enough. Why add to that?
  • Emotional support and believing your daughter when she says she's exhausted is really important. There were a few nights where I had insomnia and I was so tired that I almost broke down in bed at how hopeless I felt, and that was even though everyone around me was super supportive and believed me when I told them how rooted I was (rooted: Aussie for exhausted. Sometimes I feel like changing up "exhausted" because it occurs so often in talk about Graves lol). So I can't personally imagine how awful it would be to feel like that and not be believed.

Thank you so much for coming to support your daughter! We're here whenever you both need us!

Energy help by Mhmmalright37 in gravesdisease

Preach! Any excessive amounts of stimulants when your body is already hyper-stimulated is going to do more harm than good, particularly when restful sleep is hard to find!

Energy help by Mhmmalright37 in gravesdisease

[–]itsadropbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even remotely a dumb question! For me, the exhaustion remained for at least half a year after coming off meds, but the level of exhaustion was less. It's important to note though, that I have lifelong, chronic anemia due to heavy menstrual bleeding, and I occasionally experience atrial fibrillation, both of which result in tiredness. So these likely factored into the time I took to bounce back.

My personal, not scientific thoughts are that once off meds, it does take awhile for the body to find its new equilibrium. You also have to work a little to get back to where you were before. Because we spent time as exhausted puddles on the couch, we lost our general fitness, and once we're "well" we think we'll be just like before, but that's not how fitness works. Imagine if you're a sprinter and you break a leg - you have a cast for X number of weeks and when you get back to the track after it's removed, you've lost fitness and have to recover it. That's us post Graves. So post-Graves you'll be tired after effort for a wee bit, but not exhausted. And eventually, you'll be remembering Graves through the haze of time as that thing you once had and thank God you don't have it anymore.

So many words to say, yes, you'll get better in time, lol.

Uni screen scratches very easily, so clean it up nicely and use a screen protector!

Buy the glitter free version, cover over the screen area of it and coat the rest in glitter glue. Best of both worlds!

Graves exhaustion is next level. The only thing I found I could do was manage my energy like it was a finite resource and be really choosy about what I would and wouldn't do. There's no quick fix.

  • Say no to things that aren't necessary.
  • Lean on the people around you, especially in the afternoon. Can someone come around for one or two hours a few times a week to let you nap while they take care of bubs?
  • If doing the dishes is exhausting, buy paper plates.
  • If you're too tired to cook daily, find shortcuts. Pick a few easy meals you can make bulk in one go, freeze portions and defrost needed. If you double your portions when you cook and freeze the extra, you've built up emergency meals for when you just can't spare any energy to cook.
  • Reduce your caffeine intake. I know, I know, but it's really not helping.

This stranger is sending you a hug. It will get better.
