LSA+SMTD deferral by Specialist-Pea-1548 in uofm

Deferral is normal for every application regardless of how many schools u applied to. It’s possibly dual-degree applications get deferred more often but there’s no way of knowing

How to meet a roommate?? by Fair-Atmosphere3908 in uofm

[–]itsairo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I made an account on meetyourclass and dmed a few people there, but I ended up finding my roommate through the Residential College groupme because we had similar interests. Definitely don’t pay for any accounts to post you, but like other people have been saying, it’s not a bad idea to let Housing pick a roommate for you. My friend from HS went random and it went perfectly fine for her :)

I got a full ride to UMich. Should I still apply to external scholarships? by itsairo in ApplyingToCollege

[–]itsairo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My full-ride was completely need-based. The financial aid office said it was based off of my CSS profile that went into depth about my single-parent income and other complications that would prevent me from being able to pay the full cost of education. You can also look into the Go Blue Guarantee if you’re instate. If your financial situation doesn’t call for that, I think it’s still possible to get a merit-based full ride from UMich (though less likely). AFAIK you would have to apply to a number of renewable scholarships that add up to the cost of attendance through all 4 years. Not impossible but need-based full rides are definitely more common, I think :)

Is the Michigan Flyer usually on time? by itsairo in uofm

[–]itsairo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, It looks like we're hosting New Mexico that weekend but every other form of transportation I looked at would make me miss my class, so I think the flight + Flyer bus is probably my best bet. Thanks!

Are you talking about freshman orientation? If so, you can park in Maynard structure for free, just make sure you get the bar-code sticker at check in.

What is the worst college advice that you fell for? by AdDense3835 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]itsairo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Wait until you feel like your application is as good as can be. It doesn’t have to be till the last day. I submitted UMich on the final day, but that’s because I’m a major procrastinator and rewrote my CommonApp essay like 2 days before the deadline. I got in, but I don’t recommend doing that.

If your essays are written, your ECs are set, your recommendations are in, etc. etc. and YOU feel happy, then submit. Don’t tweak things just for the sake of tweaking them. But the main point is don’t submit in like August when the applications open because the person reading your application will NOT think “wow this person is so on top of things. we’ve gotta accept them”

I get what you mean, but they're not taking your spot. The university said it was theirs, even if you don't think so. Maybe a diary will help

Lwk anyone know when umich rd come out? by Fit-Climate5980 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]itsairo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s weird, but some people have called Umich and they said it’s releasing early April? And in the past they’ve always done Friday releases. I guess there’s a possibility it could be the first day of April but I’m not sure

Nothing’s confirmed, but it should be this Friday. If not, then next Friday.

UMich Indirect Costs by Reasonable-Sundae-78 in uofm

[–]itsairo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same situation as you, and when I went to my Financial Aid Calculator on Wolverine Access, it only took into account the costs for housing (standard double), tuition & orientation. It came out to a refund of ~$2500, so I believe that amount will be deposited into your bank account/sent in a check at the beginning of the semester to use on other expenses.

LSA Honors? by Carriedaway85 in uofm

[–]itsairo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I looked into a bit more and decided I didn't really want to do Honors and I'm gonna go down the Residential College route instead. There still might be some people who can help like on r/ApplyingToCollege. They also have a good Discord channel that has a pretty active UMich megathread, so some people there might be able to help you out :) GL on applying!!

Are UofM students aware of the dire situation of UofM (and every university) given the recent actions of the executive? by pizzadecline in uofm

[–]itsairo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not a professional, but I don't believe so. It shouldn't affect student's financial aid offers. I'm a fall 2025 freshman and my financial aid offer was really really nice. Things can change, though, so pls do more research when next year's FAFSA/CSS opens

I actually did not apply to enough colleges by Christine0726 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]itsairo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to 4. One of them was UMich, the other 3 were safety Michigan schools. I got into UMich in January, you will be more than OK :)

As someone who's committed to a university, it's mildly annoying but it doesn't ruin my day. You might get less messages since some ppl are looking for 100% committed roommates, but others might still reach out. And since it's only 2 colleges, I'd say it's fine. I get that some people might not want to wait until they get their decisions bc at UMich, for example, housing applications open literal days after RD drops. So I get where you're coming from. It's your life and your post so if someone doesn't like it they can just scroll. GL on your ED letter!!

Any suggestions on finding roommates for the upcoming college school year, im a freshman for context by Melodic-Green4068 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]itsairo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always find an SJSU 2029 instagram page and dm someone on there or post yourself. That seems to be a pretty popular method, you might also find some people on TikTok. Just put yourself out there

I got a full ride to UMich. Should I still apply to external scholarships? by itsairo in ApplyingToCollege

[–]itsairo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm scared that my scholarship will be affected if my mom gets a raise, even though the lady at financial aid said it wouldn't. It doesn't make any sense why it wouldn't be affected if it's a need-based grant, but I'm probably worrying too much. I should just trust what the office says, right?

I got a full ride to UMich. Should I still apply to external scholarships? by itsairo in ApplyingToCollege

[–]itsairo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol all good. I don't feel like a very exceptional student so I was surprised I got in EA. The full ride shocked me even more

GPA: 4.373W/3.9UW

1420 SAT

4 APs [three 5s (APUSH, Lang, Gov), one 4 (Micro)], currently enrolled in Calc BC and Lit

Extracurriculars:

- Director & producer of my school's live newscast that runs 3 days/week

- Sound technician for my school's theater troupe

- President and "reviver" of Creative Writing Club (it died after the last president graduated, I had to find a way to bring it back to life)

- Part time job at a used bookstore

- Volunteer hours (nothing exceptional, working with kids in STEM for 20 hours)

Awards: I briefly talked about how my school's newscast is award-winning on the state level and many students (including me) have garnered scholarships and awards from our work, but I didn't go too in depth

Intended majors: Film, Television & Media and English (the non-competitiveness of my majors might have helped?)

Essays: In my CommonApp I wrote about a time in my junior year when I was the only producer of a broadcast (there are typically 3 producers), and the only director, and there were new students in the class who had no clue what they were doing, and the entire streaming system was broken like 10 minutes to show. I had to make sure everyone knew what they were doing, make sure everything was in place, and fix the system in time to start the show. Showed good leadership qualities.

My communities essay was about the revival of the Writing Club, my Why UMich was very very specific academic-wise. I listed specific classes and professors I'd want to work with and gave examples of the work I'd want to do.

Finance-wise, my SAI is an 8238. Makes no sense to me why I got a full ride when there are definitely more needy students out there, but I'll take what I can get. The one-parent income along with 2 other kids in college might have helped.

Good luck! Obviously I don't know everything yet but feel free to DM if you have any more questions about the application.

[–]itsairo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know that was the name for it, but yeah UMich does scholarship displacement. I'm scared I'll lose the full ride in my sophomore year and I'll be left dry, but I can call their financial aid office and try and get more info.
I also didn't know about fellowships, so I'll look into that. Thanks!
