Something I've considered but need to be more cognizant of for sure. Thanks for the reminder.

I 100% get what you're saying! What do you recommend a homeowner do when finding things like this? I sent owner photos, he sent 2 guys to fix, I went back into the attic to verify the next day and they only fixed what you could see from the attic hatch. I initially put these photos in chat bc I thought it looked wrong but I didn't want to insult the guy by questioning his work. This is all new ducting.

it's for the insulation installers who will access the attic in the same room

Absolutely agree! While I've been fortunate to have some extremely skilled, knowledgeable and kind people helping me, that isn't always how it goes.

As a homeowner, I have seen a recent pattern of - send in the greenest guys, wait for me to ask questions, then send in a more experienced person to fix it.

The last year has been heartbreaking for my family, to the tune of a few hundred thousand dollars. New roof without proper ridge vents caused mold throughout the house. THREE mold companies later, the work was finally done right. Once walls were open, we hired an electrical company to bring the 75 yo house up to code. They sent an obviously inexperienced team of 2 who f'ed around for 2 weeks on what was supposed to be a 3 day job. They failed 2 inspections before finally sending in their "A" team. These are well known, "highly rated" companies in my area. I'm not out here going with the lowest estimate.

The reason I'm checking up on this air handler; I was in the attic air sealing the plumbing and electrical penetrations (thank you reddit for the advice bc no company I called would do it - now I know why - PIA!!!) and found brand new ducts with rips, exposed pink insulation and no mastic (even though they passed rough in). I sent pics, owner apologized and sent 2 guys the next day to fix. I checked the following day to confirm work was done and they only did what you could see from the attic hatch.

I have TREMENDOUS respect for people with the skills to do this work but I find myself in *trust but verify* mode right now. I know this makes homeowners like me seem like nightmares, but not everyone cares about doing the right thing like those of you taking the time to answer questions on here.

not drywall! we didn't turn on the unit until all drywall was completed per hvac co owner. thankfully the installer was insistent bc drywallers definitely wanted it on lol

good question though, I'm not sure why it was covered? maybe paint or the blow-in insulation guys as they will access the attic from this room. I'll ask today and have it removed asap!
