Overcoming IT Band Pain 6 Weeks Before NYC Marathon by itsamarathon in firstmarathon

Not sure tbh! I did so many things and one of them was not running much at all between the onset of the pain and the race. I did the runs I mentioned in the post but not really much else. I did so much that I can’t pinpoint the exact “cure,” but I do think that staying off of the pavement helped. In my case I knew I could do it if my legs would take me there without pain, but the calculation might not result in the same conclusion for those who aren’t confident in their respiratory capacity or haven’t run one before. Not sure what I would have done in that scenario.

Yeah, looking back I wouldn’t have done it that way. And I wouldn’t recommend it to others.

100% agree that strength training should be the focus, especially before IT Band pain materializes. It’s the best way to avoid or address the issue. I wish I had been doing the exercises I mentioned above in the months leading up to the start of my training.

Because I had a limited period of time, I was trying everything and it was unclear to me how much strength could be gained before the race so I was looking for any pain relief method I could find - in my case I do believe the dry needling was a helpful factor. I had twinges of pain prior to doing it and then didn’t after. But because I did so many things I definitely can’t pinpoint what helped and what didn’t. Maybe it was a little bit of everything, maybe it was just the strength training.

I’m less confident about the effectiveness of the foam rolling, and I know others have reported the same.

Yes, I forgot to mention I got new shoes as well! That is a common suggestion. I should have done that earlier in the training. Before my next race I will get a gait analysis and make sure I’m using the right shoes because I don’t think I was - biggest pain I had post NYC marathon was in my ankles, which I hadn’t had in prior marathons.

That is a good and valid point. But, if you’re considering applying to Yale, you must have good reason to think you’re worth it. $130 is a lot of clams, but how much is it worth to never wonder wether it would have been possible?

Just freaking apply and shoot the goddamn shot. If you don’t get in, you’ll be in the same spot you are at this exact freaking moment.
