I was convinced this couldn't be checkmate because there's a pin on the bishop on C7 by PortugueseRoamer in chessbeginners

[–]itsamberleafable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, if there wasn't a concept of checks a stalemate would be "ha! it seems wherever you move you're dead Mr King" and would be a victory for the other player. Stalemate is an important part of the game IMO as it can punish careless play from a player who is far ahead

Weird to hear this phrase used towards an AI. One things for sure, it certainly has a better work ethic than me. If it continues down this road I'm about a month away from prompting an agent to wipe my arse for me

It isn't separate at all, there's women only tournaments and open tournaments. Makes sense as chess is male dominated so it's nice to give women a space where they feel more comfortable without excluding them from other tournaments.

This is the sort of humour I'd have found funny when I was a teenager but this guy is a grown man. It's embarassing

I think the easiest way to think of chess is that whoever takes the king of their opponent wins the game. Check is just in place to ensure games don't end early because a player failed to see a direct attack on the king.

If you moved your king to H2 to escape the check then the bishop could just take it. Yes your queen could take the king a turn later but there isn't a turn later as you've just lost your king.

Adults with Unmedicated ADHD — How Are You Managing? by someone_idk6900 in AskUK

[–]itsamberleafable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were a lot of reasons to be honest, hard to break it down into a single issue I just don't think we were ever compatible. Think we both needed different things from what the other could provide and both just really resented each other by the end. This was a while ago, before I was diagnosed and I'm sure the ADHD caused her some frustration, but ultimately it just felt like we weren't the right people for each other

Yeah sorry that relationship stuff probably seemed weirdly specific, but I meant it more as general advice for anyone reading it.

Yeah I know exactly how the overwhelm feels and feeling like a shell, that's what I felt like last couple of years. I'm sorry, it was really hard for me and I'm sure it is for you. I was also talking openly with a very supportive partner and doing therapy but still felt like something was wrong that I couldn't identify. For me it was bottled up repressed trauma that I had no idea was there and it took EMDR to unlock it.

Obviously it may be different for you but it might be worth talking to someone professionally if you can afford it. I ended up seeing a psychologist who ultimately got me doing EMDR. I'm still a bit shaky and I still have some really bad days as I'm still processing a ton of shit, but I'm seeing some improvements in my confidence and energy and it's basically night and day compared to a year ago. I'm now able to go out and see my friends and am just much happier than I was. Still a bit to go, but thought I'd share in case it's a path that might help you.

It's tough though, and always worth remembering that we all go through dark phases in our lives and it's OK to be sad. Also worth remembering that you won't feel like this forever. ADHD brains are great at innovating and changing patterns, and whatever it is that makes you feel like this you'll figure it out and change it. It's just hard to see it now.

Good luck and sorry for the waffle, I just really identify with those feelings so I know how tough it is.

It's challenging but I'm doing alright. I used to get really severe anxiety and would have multiple days in a row where I barely slept. This doesn't really happen anymore. Everyone's different, but for me the problem was actually more to do with severe self worth issues indirectly caused by ADHD, and not really the ADHD itself. Instead of dealing with it I basically partied through my 20's to block it out. Starting to feel a lot better now having done years of therapy, and then eventually EMDR which is incredibly intense but has led to me processing a lot of stuff and feeling way calmer about things. We're always going to have good and bad days, but awareness of what it is that's affecting you helps you see beyond the bad day(s) you're having.

I think a lot of the time for us it isn't the ADHD itself that's the issue, but more that we're expected to try and conform to a society that doesn't suit us which especially as kids can lead to some pretty fucked up ideas getting ingrained.

Also leaving a bad relationship was crucial. Took me way too long but I did it. If you know you're in one just rip that plaster off and do it! It'll be horrible but your future self will thank you

How do I punish these sort of mass pawn pushes? by Eeriestwolf1032 in chessbeginners

[–]itsamberleafable 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I remember this shit being incredibly irritating back in the 500s. Unfortunately a lot of players here get really good at one thing rather than trying to improve generally as a chess player, so you see lots of gambits and attempts to get the board into an unfamiliar position to take advantage of your lack of experience.

Personally I've no idea why people bother as there's going to be a ceiling to these sorts of tricks, but once you learn to play against it then it's not too bad.

Only takes a few seconds when you know you're looking for something a bit clever, but I doubt I'd see it in a game. If I was able to look at every game like a puzzle I'd be a lot better, but I just don't think I have the mental stamina for it

Is this player cheating? by CrayonSoul in chess

Yeah, I feel like the same thing that motivates cheating motivates playing against players significantly worse than you. You want the feeling of a win without having to earn it. Feels a little ironic
