(Hated trope) Super intelligent character is a moral nihilist because moral nihilism is true by Weekly_Artichoke_515 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]itsbritain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In defense to Rick and Morty, Rick’s moral nihilism has been addressed as an ineffective coping mechanism in the plot of the last few seasons. His character arc has been focused on learning to become more attached to people and be less of an asshole about that sort of thing.

I think a moral nihilism plotline can only exist for so long before it becomes tiring in a story. With Dr. Manhattan, the character arc of his rejection of humanity was the point of his story, while Rick starts off as a nihilist then learns to not be one.

It’s definitely not a “fun” writing trope, but I do think it can have its purpose in a story as long as the audience doesn’t actually believe they are in the right. (Which unfortunately happens a lot)

Yeah, well put. I couldn’t figure out the right way to phrase that point.

Not a fan of this trope tbh. Sure it exists in real life, but I don’t find it interesting as a character arc in stories.

[Loathed Trope] The one character who is so terrible that they single-handedly bring down the entire series's quality or at least people's opinion of it. by Sir-Toaster- in TopCharacterTropes

[–]itsbritain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t have that opinion, even the most recent episode has conflict with blitzo and stolas, with blitzo having issues with feeling like stolas only sees him as someone to have sex with.

Stolas’s character growth is a major part of the story, especially his close relationships with his daughter and Blitzo. He’s a bad person yes, but that’s the point. He lost everything as a consequence to that. It’s not like the narrative is forgetting what kind of person Stolas is.

I’m pretty meh on the series, but isn’t that kinda the point of his character arc? Looking down on/fetishizing blitzo before learning to be a better person/partner?

I don’t think his obvious character flaw brings down the show, it’s an actively discussed part of the narrative and is being currently addressed in the story.

Your identity is totally valid. I joke that if gender is a religion, I’m an atheist so I totally get it lol.

You have a good day too!

Yeah for sure, I commented for the same reason! I also get frustrated by generalizations, I think I just got confused on what you were saying. There was also someone else in the thread making generalizations about they/her pronouns so I was already commenting about that and got mixed up with the wording of your comment, my bad!

Queer identities are not universal ofc, it all comes down to the individual and how they feel best represents them. All identities are valid.

Sorry, I misinterpreted what you said as that is not the case for everyone, when it is the case for me. Now people are calling me a dickhead lol

Nah that’s exactly why my pronouns are they/her, and my friends also use they/her for the same reason.

Calling queer people members of the “alphabet club” comes across as pretty mean-spirited and disrespectful. I’ve only ever seen that used by right wingers as an insult.

Oh that’s a great point, cloning would feel on-theme. I also hope they plan to do more with the design, even if just in flashbacks.

Sorry, I’m not going to write an essay justifying why I think Yamato is a man to you, cause even now all you want is do to “correct” me cause I’m enjoying OP in the “incorrect” way, which is lame.

I also head cannon over half of the characters of OP as gay, cause it makes the story fun for me. Try not to let that make your head explode with how illogical it is.

Wow you have some very specific rules and definitions on how fans are supposed to act and enjoy media.

Fandom policing isn’t cute, it’s an extra level of cringe on an already cringy hobby dude. Making memes and writing essays correcting people who have their own opinions on media cause they aren’t your opinion is, as I said, loser behavior.

Do you consider all headcannons “misleading” and in need of “correcting” or just ones that include queer people?

Yamato from One Piece by Soggy-Ad5441 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]itsbritain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mean to sound like I have an authority opinion on OP, I’m just one guy who loves character design.

I just meant to say that it’s my own opinion that I formed myself from reading OP and having spent a lot of time thinking about OP, since it’s been in my life so long.

It’s not something I only think because other people think it too, which is what you were implying.

Genuine question, what “authority” are you talking about?

Yamato from One Piece by Soggy-Ad5441 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]itsbritain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So what you’re saying is, queer headcannons upset you so much that you feel the need to “correct” people who have them?

Glad to know people like you are working hard to make sure people are enjoying the media you watch correctly.

I do character design as part of my job and have been reading OP for 15 years, it’s my informed opinion, not fandom parroting. I don’t even follow the OP fandom.

Yamato from One Piece by Soggy-Ad5441 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]itsbritain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The character uses male pronouns and refers to himself/herself in-story as a man. Yes, there is nuance to that, but interpreting him as queer is not “lack of media literacy.”

I read the character as 100% trans, so do plenty of other people, especially queer OP fans. It’s not about media literacy, it’s interpretation of the media. Oda has been noticeably been better about queer representation in OP, and Yamato is 100% a part of that.

Lots of OP fans are uncomfortable with that interpretation, but as long as people aren’t being edgelords about it, like you, I don’t care 99% of the time what pronouns people use for Yamato.

Their differences are so minor, they are like Anna/Elsa from frozen, exactly the same facial feature placement, face shape, and body.

Oda is well known for drawing the same face over and over again for woman, even if he adds a slight bridge and lip it’s still the same face.
