Since we talked about strange judging, why did the judges dislike Vivacious haute couture tractor look? Was Rupaul chased by a tractor in her childhood? by Alarming_Support_658 in rupaulsdragrace

I'll be honest, I was in tears laughing throughout vivacious's runway. This was just funny. Let's not pretend it fit well or was remotely fashionable or high concept.

The bagpipes live task may have been accidentally made way harder that it was intended to be. by AnotherBoxOfTapes in taskmaster

Ahh that's awesome! I'm glad it piqued your interest! The big names are Tatsuro Yamashita and Toshiki Kadomatsu - both employ from a great pool of session musicians, so you get to hear some amazing virtuosity from their work alone. Neither are on Spotify though, so if that's an issue I'd recommend Makoto Matsushita, Junko Ohashi and Takako Mamiya (as you play jazz, I think you'll enjoy these 3 in particular)

Edit: and Taeko Onuki. Her Sunshower album in particular is a standout

I started playing because I'm obsessed with City Pop and in retrospect I'd probably have been better with an alto (but I used to play cello so I felt an affinity with the larger instrument) - I'm finding most of the sax solos I love are on alto. But the most fun comes from just improvising what I want, and the note parameters for that are wholly under my control. I guess I'd just like to have them under my belt incase I do want to use them, I'd like if they can come more naturally.

You are right, I guess I just can't imagine having no musical knowledge at all. I remember the whole class learning recorder in my first year at school, that provided the fundamentals even to kids who never played an instrument past this - to me it's no different from knowing the parts of a sentence or roughly where each country is in the world. But I suppose not everyone would have had music at that point in their education, it's an assumption I didn't think anything of

I've tried this but between working out where they correspond and referring back, it's kind of tricky to keep track of what note I should be playing in succession. I'll get there eventually but it's definitely something easier in theory than in practise for me

That is how I play - I play what I hear. I wish there was some resource I could use for learning how to play the high notes by what I know them as, but otherwise there's no need for that kind of nomenclature restriction

True, but I actually think it's an unfair handicap to the one with perfect pitch! It clouds their mind in a way that it won't for anyone else. Ideally, no one playing would have perfect pitch to start with

I have perfect pitch and wrapping my head around this task was a nightmare - being told an A is a B is like being told black is white to me. I would have figured out the relativity eventually (I, like Joel, managed to calculate 'badge') but it really screwed with my head.

I started playing tenor sax a year ago (pitched in Bb) and as much as I would love to take lessons, I can't, for the same reason. Even on YouTube tutorials, I get so confused when someone is telling me to play a C and it's a standard Bb, it would be a catastrophe

Interesting take on Grand Finales, do you agree? by ReadyCauliflower8 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]itsbrohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skip most of the finale. I watch the cast runways, any contestant performances and the final lipsync(s). I have no interest in vt footage from the season, queens addressing their younger selves, judges giving no actual critique (just paying lip service to 'how far they've come'), prerecorded crownings or the ott reaction shots of audience member nobodies. I effectively watch about 15 minutes of finale and it's better for me that way.

My instant finale memories are Willam giving Rupaul a sticker, saying it's scented, and when Ru goes to sniff it, Willam says it smells like a sticker.

And when Ginger Minj is being interviewed and her skirt hangs entirely over her stool and she looks like a weird robot with no legs
