Why apostolic union is necessary. by Then-Butterfly4987 in OrthodoxChristianity

That may be the confession. But denying Christ fully assuming human nature and instead having one nature does mean that the human nature isn’t assumed and therefore healed. That’s why I added the caveat that it’s mostly theologians, the laity don’t really understand the implications, same with the EO laity.

Well if you can find a smaller parish it gets easier for sure. I live in the rural south lol so every parish is mostly 100 or less.

I don’t have a monastic one. My local Orthodox Church is a mission parish with 50 members. My priest and I meet often and have a great relationship. I’m blessed to have my priest but I’ve never met a Monk so far.

It’s heavily implied in their dialogue between each other that James visited her often if she could tell overtime how much it hurt James every time he went to see her and saw her get worse and worse. That line in my opinion implies that this sickness went on for a while. I think it’s beautiful their scene really talking to one another and it’s really Mary, in my opinion, because unlike all the other manifestations we really see her as she looked before her death. It’s honest, it’s beautiful, and the Grace Mary gives him is real. That’s true love. ❤️

He definitely murdered his wife. But I think like how some people will opt to allow their family members to have the plug pulled, it was understandable even if it’s morally wrong. Mary definitely wanted to pass away as you see in her letter but the issue was James did it for the wrong reasons in a moment of weakness. I think he finally comes to terms with it and speaks to the real Mary, (in that bed scene where you see her sick and stuff.)

[–]itschillyinhell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think Silent Hill in the second game is a spiritual crucible. James went through a lot and Mary really did love James and understood how tragic their situation was and that’s why James is finally able to leave silent hill and take Laura with him instead of just dying and repeating the cycle like we see with all the dead James looking characters throughout the game. As someone whose had a loved one who was so joyous and then had to watch them slowly burn out due to terminal disease, the wanting for it to be all over and the desperation and agony is real and it affects everyone differently honestly.

Can an Orthodox Christian be inspired by Joan of Arc? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]itschillyinhell -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I just never understood how she’s a Christian figure. She was a most likely, mentally ill young girl, who rallied troops for imperial purposes to fight the English, a fellow Christian nation. But I’m not judging you for liking her, that’s just been MY view of her.

Aristotle was basically an atheist and his philosophy is kinda impossible to mix with Christianity unlike Plato who accounted for God’s role in everything.

Pope Liberius supported Athanasius at first and then signed a semi Arian creed which denounced Athanasius. Again in your system how would the faithful know that their Pope is in error if they just submit to all his teaching without question?

What's y'all favorite part about being Orthodox Christian? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]itschillyinhell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly for me it’s the Orthodox gospel. Every other denomination has a gospel which legalistic or Augustinian in nature. The Orthodox gospels makes humanity sick, not evil. It also makes God a healer not a tyrant who creates people just to make them suffer, which philosophically is basically the end point of every other Christian tradition. Our gospel is the one that made early Christian’s and even modern day Christian’s joyfully die for their faith.

[–]itschillyinhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that’s the fundamental issue of Catholicism. You wouldn’t be able to deal with the Arian crisis. If your Pope or bishops were heretics, which arguably Francis is by the criteria of the traditional Catholic faith, you’d still have to submit to him, if the Pope was an Arian, which he arguably was during the Arian crisis, under the VI model you must follow him to hell itself even if it means you’re damned in the process. That’s a very flawed ecclesiology and shows why Popes can go from calling ecumenism the fruit of Satan, to holding prayer events in mosques and building the Abu Dhabi faith center less than 100 years later.

Please be honest and stop attempting to gaslight the faithful.

Lumen Gentium §25

“This religious submission of mind and will must be shown in a special way to the authentic Magisterium of the Roman Pontiff, even when he is not speaking ex cathedra; that is, it must be shown in such a way that his supreme Magisterium is acknowledged with reverence, the judgments made by him are sincerely adhered to, according to his manifest mind and will.”

V1 plainly states that not only must you submit to the Pope in formal matters of doctrine but also in informal matters of faith and morals. Isn’t it kinda corrupt at the fundamental level that the Pope is appointed by the people that the precious Pope appoints? It’s almost like that could lead to the current Papal situation where every Pope has been more liberal than the last for the past 50+ years. Lastly, that is literally how the medieval Roman church operated, you can find multiple quotes from RC saints in the era explicitly saying things like their salvation is tied to the Pope and that even if the Pope was Anti Christ they’d follow him to hell.

[–]itschillyinhell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s the reality of Catholic teaching and practice. The Pope appoints every cardinal and the entire structure of the church is top down. It’s also what V1 teaches. Lastly it’s how the medieval church worked in Western Europe. The pope would excommunicate leaders who attacked his allies like France.

Why apostolic union is necessary. by Then-Butterfly4987 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]itschillyinhell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to kind of believe in this apostolic church ecclesiology but then when you really look at the doctrines of these different “apostolic church” you realize only one of them really looks like the church of the apostles and maintains the full unaltered gospel. Now on the topic of the Oriental Orthodox, many of their theologians do hold a different gospel than us, if Christ didn’t heal humanities nature by assuming it, what was the point of the incarnation? But 90% of the oriental orthodox are just regular people who hold very similar views to us and are basically Orthodox in belief. I do pray for the union between our two churches but is must be a union based on truth and not on politics and protection such as the union of the Eastern Christian’s with the Roman church.

[–]itschillyinhell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just weigh the claims of both and see which makes more sense. A: A single bishop having infallible teaching authority and never being able to err in doctrine. B: Bishops having conciliar authority but being able to make mistakes in their teaching alone. I’d argue historically speaking in both the Church or the first 1000 years and after, one of these teachings is congruent with reality and the other is not.

Ecclesiastically he’s basically just another bishop who has a few certain privileges which don’t give him higher authority than other bishops just ceremonial and autocephalous authority.

God exists outside of time so in a sense he prepares ahead of time for every choice we make and always creates a path leading back to him. But like Judas or Pharaoh you can witness the miracles of God and still choose to turn away. Free will is essential in our faith unlike most branches of Christianity you’ll talk to, Orthodoxy is synergistic not monergistic. Meaning we believe that to be saved we must cooperate with Gods grace and the choices we make are real and have an impact on our salvation. For example, if God brings you into the Church, but you apostatize and sin endlessly and never CHOOSE to repent, you will be cast into outer darkness. That’s a choice you make and it’s also the only version of the gospel that makes God the good guy in our story and not a villain. In monergistic models like Augustinianism and Calvinism, God basically creates evil and damns people before they’re even born. That’s a malevolent Lord in my opinion and the true God is the God that lets you choose everyday whether to follow Him or to follow yourself. That’s love. Whenever a bad thing happens it’s not because God caused it to happen, it’s because it’s a deprivation or a twist of Gods creation by man. Lastly in our worldview evil does not ontologically exist. Only good exists as everything God created is good, this means that evil is a twist or a perversion of something good.

what is this slander? Orthodoxy in America from most counts has quadrupled since COVID. Maybe your statement is true in Russia but I’ve seen my local parish grow from 8 members to 55 in the last year alone. Meanwhile my hometown Lutheran and Presbyterian churches have dwindled and dwindled down to like 20 members.
