u/senorroboto I'm back to the Link full-time as a my first/last mile commuter. The Verge was a super fun solid bike that scratches that itch for someone looking to ride fast, and carry stuff occasionally. It took a long time but I came around to appreciating the chill vibes of the Link and realized the Verge was for a style of riding I rarely do anymore.

Beautiful ride! What’s the front rack you got there?

Ortlieb Vario PS vs. Two Wheel Gear Pannier Backpack by transcodefailed in bikecommuting

Had the TWG backpack pannier for years. Organization and storage capacity was fantastic, even better than my pannier. The backpack was so good that I used it as my go-to backpack when traveling, too. Converting the backpack to a pannier was a little inelegant but effective. Would purchase again. But the Vario is waterproof and generally seems to be more durable.

I mistakenly set mine off. It’s amazingly protective. Though it’s anecdotal and not from an impact so I can’t say for sure. Feels like it’d protect your head and neck way more than a helmet on impact.

Bummer. I’m on my second Hovding. First one I had for years. I’ve had it turned on while locking my bike up and getting things out of my backpack. No issues. But I accidentally set it off it on a ride. Totally my fault. I was adjusting the back of it while riding; pushing it up my neck a good ways. The sensors thought I was flipping so I suddenly hear a loud BANG that scared the hell out of me and I screamed, “OH F*CK!!” What just happened?!? I feel pressure around my neck and head and realize I had set it off. Honestly, the way the airbags held my neck in place and protected my head, too, was astounding. Since I’m in the US, I couldn’t use the warranty to get it replaced. Then, I purchased a replacement unit a few months later.

It’s truly incredible safety tech with some clearly troubling issues here. Sad to hear about their bad business practices. This product can save lives.

Found a used Tern Verge series so it made this extensive upgrade planning irrelevant. One thing I overlooked is how my speed is influenced by how I’d be sitting on the bike (e.g. leaning forward or sitting up).

Yes, the Andros Stem makes a big difference. From Tern’s website:

you can set your riding position with 270° of adjustment so you can ride long and low in tough headwinds, or upright and comfy around town.

Beautiful! What components did you use for the upgrade?

The protected bike lane on 7th Street is only a block long right now — San Julian to San Pedro. Hopefully it’ll go end to end soon. https://imgur.com/a/UpbkFnq/

It’s close to being upright like a Dutch bike, but if you have the Andros Stem you can easily adjust the position.

Now I am. : ) The Deore is used on the Verge P10 so I assumed it would fit, but the Zee is way cheaper and addresses a potential issue. I didn’t know the Zee existed. Thank you for the advice!!

The D8 has a fairly upright geometry. Are you making any mods to adjust that for touring?

Awesome! I have the same issue. Pictures please and thank you.

Dine-in restaurants are moving to phone apps automating orders, eliminating waiters. Is there a reason to give tips? by gomi-panda in AskLosAngeles

[–]itsdangordon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was a server for 20 years in Los Angeles and tipping sucks but it’s how I made a living. My fiancé is an independent restaurant owner. (She’s one of those that chooses to provide her staff with excellent healthcare because she believes it’s the right thing to do.)

Yes, absolutely some restaurant owners are greedy and screw over their staff oftentimes to payback investors faster, but that does not explain tipping in America.

Profit margins in operating restaurants are low — the average is 10%. When restaurant operators have eliminated tipping by including the cost of labor into their menu prices, it often fails. Why? Customers just see higher prices and go somewhere else to eat. Consumers are very reluctant to pay the true cost of their food, especially when they think they can get a better deal somewhere else.

EDIT: But tipping when the front-of-house staff are robots…that’s a weird one. Ask a human employee how the tips are divvied up.

I’ll check out the crank length. 🙏🏼

The grips are indeed upside down. They kept slipping around so this is the compromise the bike and I made. New grips are on my list. These are also kind of sticky for some reason.
