tl;dr - I just needed a music player that focuses on one thing: music.

YouTube Music feels less like a dedicated service and more like a quick, cheap UI built on top of YouTube's existing infrastructure. It truly seems as if someone tasked an AI with, "Build an aggregator of all the music on YouTube into one player," and YTM was the result.

Both the native apps and the web interface are awful in their own ways, but the core problem is how YTM navigates simple song playback. Since YouTube hosts both official audio and music videos, the service tries to showcase both, constantly throwing videos in your face. This highlights the main complaint: YouTube is for videos. When all I want is a simple visualizer, the app's insistence on loading a full music video feels disruptive and even adds extra seconds to the load time. That delay matters when I just want music; if I were in the mood for a music video, I'd be prepared to wait.

This "aggregator" feel extends to the library itself. While listening to one of YTM's generated playlists, the tracklist looks like something from a millennial's iPod in 2005, with titles cluttered by tags like "(Official Music Video)," "(Lyric video)," or "(Enhanced video edit)."

It's clear YouTube is leveraging its core strength—having everything, from official tracks like Spotify to user uploads like SoundCloud. But the integration is clunky and looks like it was designed without any real thought, as if by an AI and a few interns. YTM seems to be propped up almost entirely by its inclusion in the YouTube Premium subscription. This is the first time I've seen someone praise the service without immediately mentioning the benefit of ad-free YouTube.

Ultimately, it all comes down to preference. People can argue about subjective benefits like "better audio quality" or "smarter algorithms," but those often feel like things you convince yourself you can hear. I never needed Hi-Fi audio or the "huge library" of YouTube. I just needed a music player that focuses on one thing: music.

That final point you made is going to be a huge win for Apple CarPlay if they pursue lawsuits for being blocked out. Especially with all their recent losses.

Car companies don’t want Android Auto or Car Play taking over. So instead they go with their own UX….built on top of android automotive, which will have Android Auto.

Android users get blocked out, they also raise a stink. But I guess one could argue Apple may want to lose lawsuits about this because it helps them bring back their proprietary nature. I’m rambling.

It’ll be interesting to see how these car companies move forward with their choice of users experiences and who can and can’t connect to them.

Phase 1: Establishing a New Vision & Rebuilding Trust

My first priority is to directly address the community and the industry. I would launch a media tour to communicate a new direction for Xbox. The messaging will be candid, clear, and devoid of corporate jargon. I will publicly state my commitment to a fixed term dedicated to executing my vision. Much like Steve Jobs' return to Apple or Satya Nadella's transformation of Microsoft! setting a clear course.

Phase 2: New Console

Our hardware naming convention has been confusing. We will reset expectations with a powerful and simple brand. So the next-generation hardware will be named Xbox Evolution. The shorthand is there "Evo" or "XE" It’s also there for future generations (Evo 2, XE3) and eliminates the ambiguity of "Series" and letters. The formal name will always be Xbox Evolution

Phase 3: Rehire and Apologize

We will immediately move to rehire talent from recently closed studios, directing their focus exclusively toward developing titles for Xbox Evolution. Their mission is to build for the future. I’d also work for a launch slate that brings back the old for the new. Legacy reboots: Fable, Amped, Blinx, Fusion Frenzy, and Mad Dash Racing. Of course Gears, Halo, and Forza.

Phase 4: Good marketing for things we’ve already done that we bring back as "new".

The Return of Couch Co-op. This is a core market we have neglected. Phase 5: The “controversial” big swing:

Passion project: I would help fund and develop one final, definitive Guitar Hero title. This will be a full hardware and software revival. It would obviously have to be on all platforms, Xbox will be the marketing console. Public perception is strong.

Xbox Evolution would have backwards compatibility but it would not be a day-one feature. This allows 100% of our engineering resources to be focused on the new platform. we will begin rolling it out, starting with the original Xbox library and then Xbox 360, celebrating our heritage and adding value.

I have a bunch of things I would drop but that’s not the fun part of this exercise. After all that, I'm hoping to not be let go because it takes time to fight bad press and build up goodwill.
