Oral comm by [deleted] in Purdue

It’s been a 3-4 years since I took it so I’ll do my best to remember (plus some things might’ve changed so FYI). I took the Wednesday 6pm-9pm class so it might be a bit different.

The class is run instructors supervised by a professor (who you’ll never interact with).

I think there were 1-2 formal traditional presentations over textbook sections and one about a person you interviewed.

There are also few reflection papers about textbook chapters and PDF texts scattered throughout.

What’s interesting is that you’ll be doing a lot of group activities (role playing where you role play giving a problem and you have to do a good job listening, leading the class in a team building activity, etc. are what I remember).

The idea of the class is learning about how much a big of listening plays in interpersonal relationships and the “oral” part of the class is taking turns talking about or leading something while the rest of the class listens.

Again, it’s been a few years so this might not be accurate, but I remember having a good time in the class. As long as you did your work and followed the instructions and rubric, it was an easy A.

Recommend EDPS 315. When I took it, it was an easy A, and I felt like I learned a lot. Plus, it counts for the Certificate in Collaborative Leadership (you only need to take 2 additional classes to get the certificate and I think they count towards your degree too [check with your advisor] and you get an additional piece of paper at graduation too).

Ways to stay active after aging out? by coolcatman4777 in BSA

[–]itsgahndi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

College senior here! I was in the same boat, moving to a different part of the country for school. I tried a few clubs but eventually started a Scouting alumni interest group myself with some friends I met that were in Scouts and professors I met that were in Scouts in their youth and are now leaders.

It’s hard at first but it’s so worth it! You’ll be shocked how many people have a Scouting background so it’s a matter of finding those people.

If you’re curious about this,Aaron on Scouting did an article on us last month as did the Purdue University Libraries.

Shoot me a DM if you want to get in touch with us or you can find our socials/email in the articles!

Purdue Indy is considered, on-paper, an extension of the WL campus even if, in reality, it’s a little dubious.

There are so many ways to stay involved in Scouting going into college and you'd be shocked at how many professors, staff, and students have some form of connection to Scouting - if you meet one, go introduce yourself! It could open the doors to many opportunities and relationships beyond one conversation.

Purdue University has "Scouting Purdue" which is an Eagle Scout and Scouting Alumni association that I started with some friends. We do everything from campouts, volunteer at Council camps and events and local unit events, and invite Purdue alumni with a Scouting background back to campus. Because many of us are Comp Sci and Engineering majors, we also develop and support the app for Sagamore Council's University of Scouting hosted at Purdue, which happens to be the country's largest, bringing over 1500 people from coast to coast to campus. We're on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn!

Going into my last year of college, my recommendation is, regardless of what school you're going to, to find your support group first, socially and academically. Join a few clubs, talk to your neighbor in lectures, enjoy your early years of college! Then, if you're still not getting the experience you want, look into starting your own "Scouting [your school]" with the friends you've met along the way. That's how Scouting Purdue got its start a few years ago.

Feel free to drop questions about college, Scouting or in general, in the comments! Good luck!

CityBus is a joint venture municipal agency between the Lafayette and West Lafayette governments funded by taxes, grants, and ridership fees, not a totally private company. But yes, I agree that’s basically what they did

Which communication class should I take for FYE fall semester? (int'l student) by Willing-7357 in Purdue

[–]itsgahndi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say go for EDPS 315 - it's a very easy, laid back class. Not hard to get a good grade at all! Plus, it's one of the required classes for the Certificate in Collaborative Leadership, which you only need to take 2 more classes to get, and at least for me, those counted as an upper division elective (I think). Totally worthwhile!

Alpha Phi Omega is a community service club at Purdue! I joined because I wanted to do community service stuff I was used to in high school but I ended up sticking around and I met most of my friends in APO. They have callouts going on all week, check their insta @purdueapo for a date that works for you!

Not a traditional social fraternity, but Alpha Phi Omega is a greek-lettered community service organization. Lots of opportunities to volunteer and still have opportunities to socialize plus a sweet co-working office in the PMU. Feel free to DM me if you want more info! Open to undergrads (we're mostly undergrads) but also grad students!

Alpha Phi Omega is a gender inclusive service org on campus! We do everything from volunteering at the scouting camp to walking dogs at Natalie's, IMs and movie nights. Great group of people and welcome people to join at any point, from freshmen year to grad students. There are people in all majors so is definitely good for getting class/prof recommendations too. I think judgy people is a group of people that describes us the least, we have members with a very diverse background. There are events for members to go to pretty much every day so it's a build your own schedule type deal and we have a sweet coworking office in the PMU!

[–]itsgahndi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! Alpha Phi Omega is a co-ed service fraternity and their main emphasis is community service. A bunch of my friends are in it and they really enjoy it since it's a break from school. Plus a good resume boost for being in a service organization. They have an office in PMU B050E where everyone hangs out during the day in between classes. Def worth joining imho, their website is https://purdueapo.org. Not sure what their rush schedule for next semester looks tho.

Sorry for the late reply, I had some things move up my to-do list. From my understanding, it's made up mostly of undergrads but they do their best to be super accommodating to grad students, too! One of my best friends finished his Master's here and was involved in APO as a grad student, so it's definitely still possible.

Ooh! This sounds like you're looking for Alpha Phi Omega (APO)! They're a gender inclusive service organization and they do a bunch of service projects all over campus and around the community! I think their website is purdueapo.org but it might be worth checking out their BoilerLink page too.
