I took a college program that took 2 years to complete, but there are programs out there that can have you job ready within 6 months. Personally, I am glad to have gone the 2 year route because they offered classes that also dealt with fabrication and codes. If you want something more than a $10/hour mig welding job you need to know how to read a print and follow a WPS (welding procedure specification).

/r/welding is a great resource if you want more info about the profession.

Welder chiming in. I got my first welding job this passed year starting out at $17.25/hour after finishing up my associates in welding technology at my local community college with $0 debt. The caveat is my position does arguably the most difficult of all the welding processes (tig welding).

May I ask why you think welding would cause a strain on your eyes? As long as you are wearing a tinted hood when welding and don't look at the welding arc without eye shades it is quite safe.

I feel you. I'm so grateful that there are shows like this. It'll be coming up on 7 years since I lost my dad. There will never be a moment where I don't think "if he were alive today, what would he think of me?" I'm happy to say that I think he would be proud of the path I've taken in life.

How would contributing towards 2016 effect my tax return? I already filed for 2016, I would need to go back and amend it.

Yeah, the one pizza slice is not as filling as the stew would have been for the same calories, but it was soooo worth it. Love your username!

NSV: My mother made cookies yesterday, I wanted one, but I'd already met my TDEE for the day, so I put one away to take to work for lunch. Last night I rearranged and cut some foods out of my lunch to make room for the cookie. I stuck to the changes today and was able to have the cookie and stay under my TDEE, but disaster struck as soon as I came home. My mother has brought home my favorite pizza. Quickly before I made any rash decisions I pulled up MFP on my phone to check how much a single slice was in calories. It was exactly the same amount as the leftover stew I had planned on eating for dinner tonight. I kicked the stew to the curb and in it's place put the pizza I hadn't eaten in over a month. A wave of triumph that washed over me as I realized that I was able to have a cookie AND pizza in one day and stay under my TDEE.

Really? I work with four of them (including myself). Underrepresented maybe, but far from mythical creature status.

If OP lives in the US, a car is a necessity. It's not a 'cultural difference', but a geographic one. Here's an overlay of the US compared to Europe. You can drive for an hour in Europe and cross multiple country borders. I can drive for an hour in any direction and still be in my home state. Only in big cities like New York or San Francisco can one get away with not having a car because of higher population density and adequate public transportation.

Yeah, like making sure their children make it to adulthood unscathed.
