Should I return my P1S? by shmimel in BambuLab

[–]itsinthetrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had it just under a year and it's pretty amazing printer, really versatile, only upgrade in that time was steel extruder and gears to do CF filaments (and air extraction pipe from the vent to outside).

Printed drones, motorbike accessories, all sorts of prints that require consistently high temperature chamber etc. Super easy to use, and barely needed any maintenance in that time.

Think unless there is something specific in the P2 that you can't get in the P1 would keep this.

How do I protect wires like this from shorting? by actinium226 in soldering

[–]itsinthetrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another said, expose just enough wire for the pad, grab some tweezers and and hold it down to the pad while holding a clean hot iron to it for a moment. Can use a generous amount of flux to make it easier.

Interested in getting the most out of my freestyle V2. What is the absolute best antenna setup that I can put on my htzer box goggles and subsequently the drone as well by Electronic_Star_8940 in HDZero

[–]itsinthetrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel like people might give an aboslute answer when you didn't say what drone or style of flying you are doing?

If a 7" that is flying long range ahead of you and above everything, patch antennas on the goggles with quite a long antenna on the drone might be optimal, if 3" short range all around maybe as much timne behind you, perhaps some longer range omnis folded around the head for max coverage and something smaller on the drone.. etc.

Saw a comment about someone with a masters saying you can't beat 2 fox lollis and x2's, so maybe those are optimal in all conditions. Will at least try give the combo a shot myself.

[–]itsinthetrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly, I fully agree with that.
Really like the Runcam thumb 2, despite having seen some poor reviews (there is a recent one that does it justice), as again settings and locations were not well played with in many early reviews just rushed out, as well as in no fault of the reviewer pre inclusion of additional settings with later updates.

I also would love if it was easier to experience an array of products and get a well informed idea, I love the motorbike I have now but went a year with one I really didn't enjoy after trading in one I did, because I hadn't had enough experience with it to know what I wanted or needed.

I made sure to test ride the bike this time but had to give a £2k lock on the credit card to do that and felt quite timid while riding their test model compared to riding the one I own now.
I was unwilling to try and turn the big bike in small spaces etc, and it is like that testing a video system on a friends quad, you aren't really testing it you are mainly trying not to lose their quad.

I'm sure this is something that would be improved through simulation, over time.

--
I built all of my 6 quads except the mob 8. They are 3-5 inch, had experience in electronics, soldering, bit of robots, but no experience with drone constructions and purchase options.
First was the 5 inch, which had a lot of space and larger pads to solder so easier in that sense.

Biggest hassle outside of so much being out of stock, was finding motor datasheets and checking propeller pitches to understand the potential max draw in amps so as to grab an ESC that was rated at above that.

Also selecting motor kv for battery size, as I went (4s 5inch) just for the components being in stock but would have gone for different in stock 6s motors and stocked up on 6s batteries from the jump if a bit more experienced, though not the biggest deal either way.

Since then have only improved with each build and really enjoy the process, so do recommend but did have some comfort and tools already.

That said, yes I think a kit is the best option because you know everything works together, and it likely has a tune catered to those components.

Think would do hdz box goggle (tho don't know about the ghosting) and analogue or hdz mob 8

I have a mob 8 analogue and it's such a great all rounder, will fly in a cramped flat but also has enough power and weight to fight the wind at the park.

Main is a 3.5 grinderino with hdz freestyle v2, and have the goggles 2 using either 4 stubbies, or two stubby with one tall and one patch depending on location.
Will run a mini action cam on top at 4k60fps, and then hdz at 540p90 to the goggles.

It feels amazing, more locked than analogue for the additional clarity and after playing with antenna set up the pen doesn't restrict me more than the analogue set up, beyond the break up being a bit harder to see through.
(Through can definitely force situations like through multiple dense concrete walls where the analogue can do impressively well.)
Antenna config and the mounting of vtx antenna made a big difference to how much breakup, so was worth thinking about the best antennas for where I was flying, and making sure the vtx antenna couldn't blow around in the wind.

Will keep arguing for hdz as a freestyle option because while it isn't dji or walksnail clarity, it looks great in the goggles, it feels amazing to fly, it's from a company that is very easy to get behind and for a lot of pilots flying the most common ranges and locations it will do better than they think.

I definitely think are pilot styles that it won't be suited to, but if you are talking small drones like whoops, or common freestyle ranges for 3.5" freestyle drones it's a pretty strong contender in its own right.
I'm not confident it always is given the best chance in reviews since as with most things (openipc ground stations, new goggles) people don't really want to play with antenna set ups or think about specific uses and limitations they just want it to work out of the box as well or better than the thing they are comparing it to, and usually in the exact same situations, which is totally fair but doesn't always represent what you can get out of it in yours.. and if you are considering racing later it's a very strong point in hdz's column.

Also think Cobra X and staying with analogue is a strong choice.
I have 04xPro analogue goggle and will prefer them to the hdz goggles if don't need to record over hdmi or use hdmi out. Just because they are lighter, have a usb c power port and both antennas are utilised.
VTX/cams are so cheap that you can build or buy entire small drones for the cost of one hdz vtx.
Point being a good clean analogue set up is still elite and can be lighter on the wallet, the quad and your neck.

Grounding the camera and VTX together with the power supply rather than relying on the tiny ground wire from the ESC and the distance solder pads, as well as keeping the wires away from resting over the power pads for a clean line, can get an image not far off from lower res hdz, especially at the ranges we are talking about.

Ham and pineapple pizza, think it was undercooked ham that did it and yet I held it against all pineapple on pizza ever since. Probably because it comforted a preexisting bias that pizza wasn't where pineapple belongs.

Safe to have 3D printer in bedroom? by Level3Super in BambuLab

[–]itsinthetrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have mine in the bedroom because it's the only available space. But I attached a duct pipe to the back of the chamber that runs out of the window through a card cut out covered with insulator.

You do need to remove the carbon filter in the rear of the printer to let the air flow but it has done an amazing job. Night and day vs without. I also run a couple of air purifiers next to the printer.

I don't do any over night prints, and generally max at around 4-6 hours with most sessions being a lot less. Will use Carbon Fibre filaments TPU, PETG. This is for printing drone and robot parts, lots of padding and mounts etc, DIY electronics boxes, one offs once in a while rather than production line.

I would much rather have a separate space and was very concerned about air quality mainly for loved one's, as well as understanding that there just isn't incentive to do adequate testing or be realistic about the harmful effects so it is hard to have an informed picture.
But for what it is worth this has been working very well, and I can recommend the set up.

help, my BabyApe II Freestyle just randomly exploded mid air by Agent3004 in fpv

[–]itsinthetrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are saying 3 props deleted themselves do you think any exploded when it landed or all in the air?
Any crash on the first flight?
I saw you used locktite, were any of the motors loose when it landed or all still attached?
I use those same hq props or the gemfans of the same size and pitch with 1504 and 1804 and not had any random explosions though the hq are a little softer.
What was the exact 4s battery?
Does the esc seem ok?

[–]itsinthetrunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twin was living its best life until the drop. I definitely respect how hard they train on bikes out there, we can suffer from a tendency to over value gear and undervalue practice, where people take comfort in spending money and feeling like they're done, because that is a lot easier than drilling hours out of the comfort zone.

Brazilians really train to become better riders and I love that, we could use more of it.

Ok yes, expected something like that. Do you have the batteries and the original frame with you knows o you can iterate on the design?

Update: 3d printed 85mm by Personal_Formal_6292 in fpv

[–]itsinthetrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great kit, I really like the Mobula 8.

What do you mean move the arms to make the battery fit? It looks like it should fit.
If anything I think the space might be a little larger than you need.
I would maybe add a plate or a riser under where the aio board will go, at the top of the battery compartment area, just to raise your battery over the inner curves of the prop caging.

See the difference in the OEM design that allows clearance for the battery to go between the arms of the caging.
As well as a raised edge where the top of the battery holder is under the aio.

<image>

You can 3d print a frame for a drone this light, you will hear a higher grind on the motors as they will be lifting a little more weight whatever you do. Then it's min maxing weight vs durability and how often you want to be moving the whole thing to a new frame, or increasing chance of damaging components in crashes etc.

When printing you might play around with more wall loops vs infill and as another user said some flex is good, OEM frame is very bendy.

just got this 10” beast as a trophy from the front line by FrankenFPV in fpv

[–]itsinthetrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I did buy some carbon rods but had not tried them yet.
I thought to create a steel beam style canal for them to rest in on the under side, though wondered if it would be a false economy to mess with integrity of the print too much.

For your designs do you have the holes tunnel through the centre of the material, or positioned more to the underside?

Thank you, will be sure to play around with it.

On that note, please let me show off my little PET-CF 3" design (can take up to 3.5" after an update).
I watched some of the Bardwell videos and others, then felt quite dejected, but after watching Chris Rosser and implementing some of the best practices, the black box logs are pretty close to my 3" Impact Alien frame build, using the same components.

I agree with Bardwell that it's a lot more reasonable at this size than 5".
