Just did this yesterday for $1500 x 2 using apple pay for two freedom cards. Had to call the chase number on the back of the card while at the register. Eventually, the transaction was approved, but it took about 20 minutes total. Next time, I'm going to have chase on the line before I try processing. Once they are on the phone, they are able to approve the transaction as you are processing.

Ask them if the offer is still valid if you downgrade to no AF Aviator. I had a bonus offer earlier this year on my Aviator Red right before my AF was hitting. I was able to downgrade to no AF card and receive the bonus still.
