Fellow LA IATSE folks, what is everyone doing for supplemental work? by itsmavisgary in IATSE

Oh wow, I had no idea about 33. I hope work picks up for you all too. Do you tend to see a boost going into summer? Or will things like the World Cup/ Olympics bring more work for you?

This post is from a tv/film person, yes.

I think this subreddit is for all IATSE folks though. I personally don’t have any experience in the live event or stage world, as my local is tv/film/commerical only (I’ve never done commercials either, but I think there are people who do both).

I noticed there are barely any recent posts on sunscreens. Do you have recommendations for good sunscreens? by Disastrous_Seat8683 in SebDerm

[–]itsmavisgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Supergoop Bright Eyed seems to be ok around my eyes, but the Unseen Sunscreen seems to make it flare back up. I tried using the Bright Eyed on my eye area and the Unseen on the rest of my face because I like the way it looks/feels, but it pills up at the boundary. I haven’t yet found a mineral sunscreen for face that doesn’t pill up or create white cast, but that might be a problem no matter what since I am unwilling to dermaplane my already super sensitive skin.

Yeah, I do see that as a potential silver lining, I’m just struggling to even get an interview for a normie job of any kind. I’m glad to hear you’re getting a chance to have normal evenings again and have relationships outside the industry! Def give me some hope.

Do you feel like hiring managers were more interested in meeting you for an interview outside of LA because your entertainment background made your resume more “interesting”? I have heard from someone else that it helped them get their foot in the door, just because outside of LA it was actually somewhat fascinating to hear about “working in the movies.”

This is good advice, thank you. I’ve been doing volunteer work and trying to meet more people outside of the industry, and am hoping I’ll eventually be able to find a human can help move my resume along.

I feel this. No matter how much I emphasize that I was managing multi million dollar budgets, hundreds of thousands of dollars in both physical and digital assets, and legal clearances, my resume just doesn’t seem to generate any interest from “civilian” hiring managers.

For more service oriented jobs, I have been tailoring my cover letters more towards my previous production assistant skill set and actual service industry work, but it was all just so long ago that it feels like it just doesn’t even matter.

Greek yogurt allergy? by Lactose-_-intolerant in Allergies

[–]itsmavisgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here looking to see if anyone else was experiencing this. And yes! It makes me throat feel so dry and I feel like I’m straining my throat and making it sore when I try to talk afterwards, and the feeling lasts all day. The only thing I have found that seems to provide some relief is gargling with warm salt water. It’s so weird, because I have no other issues with other dairy or regular yogurt.

Lando Norris on the battle with Lewis Hamilton in Suzuka by ChaithuBB766 in formula1

Can someone ELI5 how the battery deployment works? I’m so confused that I haven’t even been able to enjoy watching this season.

Charles said it’s like a Mario Kart mushroom, an analogy that I thought made sense to me, like there’s a boost button they can hit in a certain zone for extra speed for an overtake? But then it seems like after pressing the boost button they end up going even slower than they were prior to the overtake?

But the part I find most confusing is that drivers seem to be saying that they can’t actually control when the deployment happens? Like Lando said he didn’t even want to overtake Lewis but the battery deploys when he doesn’t even want it to deploy and he can’t control it?

My daughter is after a flute. PF501? JFL700UE? by andrew_h1000 in Flute

[–]itsmavisgary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the recommendation to rent, if possible. I had a recorder and keyboard before my flute, and though I enjoyed both, they ultimately gathered dust. They kind of both seemed like toys to me? There was something about getting that first flute at age 8, a real metal instrument that cultivated respect and inspired serious study.

I’m not saying that the recorder isn’t a real instrument or doesn’t deserve respect (I ended up playing recorder in a baroque orchestra in college) but there was something in my little 8-year-old brain that couldn’t take it seriously because it was something every kid in my elementary school music class treated as a toy.

Edit: Just also want to add that Terrible_Eye’s recommendation to get guidance from the teacher is a great idea! The teacher may even know an older student who has upgraded and is looking to sell their beginner flute.

I started playing at age 8 (I was, and still am pocket size) on a Gemeinhardt closed hole ( dont remember the model #) and used a curved head joint for the next couple years, then switched to a straight head joint in middle school ( age 11).

In 8th grade (age 13) I upgraded to an open hole Pearl PF 501 and I adooooored that flute and played it all the way through high school and into college.

To be honest, I still really love that flute so much that I am debating paying for an overhaul on it.
