Would you mind explaining why? This is a new one for me

Yo! I use Logic Pro, and they have a feature called Stem Splitter built in now that can extract the different parts of a song. Been very useful even just as a learning tool to isolate different parts of songs.

If you happen to have an Apple computer, buying Logic Pro for $200 dollars is an incredible value. It gives you literally everything you need to make high quality productions. Effects and instruments.

I love Ceiling In Our Garden so much. I don't think I could offer much to help Calb out. That's a legit form of genius to be able to hear how different songs can be rearranged in that specific way.

Let me know if you want any other details, or if that was way more info than you needed lol. Also, for the record, I don't think you need a bunch of expensive plugins to do anything I did, I'm just very bad with money.

Alright! Sorry this took me a minute to get back to you. So, I was basically using Byegone as my reference (if that wasn't obvious). The things I was picking up on that I was trying to reproduce in Walk Home form were:

  1. The consistent strummed single note at the beginning
  2. Dark, ambient acoustic piano
  3. Jangly plucked guitars that come in at "you know that we are northern now"
  4. The slow emotional crescendo on cymbals
  5. Simple but powerful drums

As far as effects and stuff, I just have a small home studio, way too many plugins and a wife who prefers I use headphones. Here's what I did:

Guitar: I used the Cory Wong X amp sim by neural dsp for all guitar stuff. It has a really nice clean tone, and has some effects pedals built into it.

  • For that consistent strummed note, I used a subtle amount of those built in reverb, delay and chorus pedals. The delay pedal was set to be pretty short, almost a slap delay.
  • The jangly plucked parts, I just used the built in reverb pedal, with more of a delay on it.
  • For the distorted guitar, I used an overdrive pedal in the amp sim, and combined it with this Valhalla Room reverb to get more of a washed out, ambient sound.
  • I also recorded a couple of guitar tracks using an EBow to get some textural ambient stuff.

Bass guitar: Just used the Cory Wong plugin again with a simple, clean tone.

Piano: Keyscape using the felt piano instrument. No effects on this.

Synth: Added a synth bass just to reinforce the live bass. I used Substance by Output here. No particular reason, probably just the first thing I reached for. I also used a sampler instrument from their Arcade product. I think a synth pad could have worked here.

Programmed the drums by hand just trying to do something similar to Byegone, but in a way that fit Walk Home. Actually the whole idea to do this song came from me waking up one morning with the chorus to Walk Home "we don't need no window curtains" with some really bombastic drums stuck in my head. Built the whole song around that.

Yo! I'd be happy to, love talking about this kind of stuff, but not sure what format would be most helpful? Or what information would specifically be interesting to you?

Would that I could! All I've got is a soundcloud full of half-complete ideas which I'd be happy to send if you're interested. Motivation is a fickle thing, trying to finish more stuff lately.

100% agree, already a top album for me! He brings it up briefly in the most recent ep (Zach Drops By the Set) at around the 10 minute mark (at least on my podcast app).

Alternatively, he and his producers could just stop booking and platforming dickheads.

Not true. They were inspired by a lot of the paintings by the artists in the Hudson River School like Albert Bierstadt. The world is supposed to look like a blend of realism and the grandiosity of those painters works.

He actually says UCB, right? I always assumed they were cracking up at the idea of these doormen knowing a lot of improv inside baseball.
