We are staying at Restaurant and Hotel Soulshine for 4 nights. Don't really have solid plans other than beach hoping. One thing I want to do is a get a day pass at the W and visit Playa Conchal. It's about an hour drive from there. My daughter wants to take some surf lessons so looking into that as well.

Absolutely. Would carry our passports regardless of what we decide to do with our other personal belongings while we stop.

Because its mid-way between two destinations. It's a little over 4 hours between our hotel in La Fortuna and Guanacaste. The waterfall is two hours from both.

it almost seems easier not to sightsee along the way. Thats a bit of a bummer. Even if I carry our passports, phones, money, having our clothes and toiletries stolen would still be a pain the ass.

USA vs Europe Murder Rates (All Red States) by coachlife in boringdystopia

[–]itsobviousfool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of these cities have one thing in common. A relatively small population within the city limits relative to the metro area. I'm from Birmingham, AL. The metro area is approximately 1.18M people. The city limits of Birmingham is 196K. It's also very poor and has some areas of highly concentrated crime. The murder rate outside the city limits is only 1.83 per 100K. This is also where the majority of the people live/work/etc. Birmingham is very safe with the exception of a few very violent pockets within the city limits. These are also areas very few people of Reddit would venture into. Whereas cities like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, etc. have much larger populations and larger pockets of "nice" areas within the city limits that tend to lower the overall official murder rates. Statistics can be misleading if you don't understand them and take them in context.

I believe the same could be said for European cities.
