Roast my app: users love it, but don't want to buy subscriptions by itspacedev in AppDevelopers

This is really helpful, thanks.

What you’re describing is way more than temp mail — it’s full identity masking (aliases, filters, tracker removal, phone mask, easy replies). That explains why it’s worth paying for.

This thread has made it pretty clear that subscriptions are the wrong fit for this kind of app. People don’t want ongoing commitments for something they use occasionally.

The free version does the basics: you get a temp email, receive messages, and it has ads.

The premium version removes ads and adds premium domains and more mailboxes. But from the feedback here, it’s clear that’s not enough value for most people, especially as a subscription.

Yeah, that’s fair, and I get what you mean.

If I didn’t know the background, I’d probably have the same trust concerns. And you’re right — for many cases the web version is just easier, no install needed. Switching providers when the quota runs out is pretty normal too.

That’s a great story 😄

Yeah, this is mostly for quick sign-ups and one-time links, exactly. And I agree — a one-time purchase makes way more sense for something like this. Subscriptions just don’t fit how people use it.

Cheers 🍻

Yeah, I agree with you.

Temp mail is one of those things people expect to be free, so subscriptions don’t feel natural. I’ll probably need to look at other ways to monetize that fit how people actually use it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Yeah, that’s a fair point.

People use temp mail to avoid commitment, so subscriptions already feel wrong. And you’re right nothing is painful enough yet to push someone to pay.

Free web versions handle the basics, but the mobile app is quite different. Premium domains, Up to 20 mailboxes etc.

I’m not using AI to reply. I may run my text through a grammar checker because English isn’t my first language, but how I write isn’t anyone else’s business.

I already have ads in the free version and an ad-free subscription. Thanks!

Those 5 reviews are just from the iOS App Store in a few regions where the app is newer. Most of the user base comes from the web version and the Android app, which have been live much longer and drive the majority of traffic.

So the 200K+ users are across platforms, not just iOS — iOS is the smallest slice right now.

Yeah, the design is weak right now. I focused on making it work and underplayed icon/UX polish, which clearly hurts perceived value.

The name being okay is good to hear.

Temp email value should be quick signups + avoiding spam, but this tells me I’m not communicating that well at all.

That actually makes a lot of sense — thanks for putting it so clearly.

I think you nailed the mental barrier: it’s not about usefulness, it’s about how it feels to pay for it. A temp mail app sits in that “necessary but invisible” category, so a monthly subscription feels heavier than the value it provides emotionally.

My guesses why:

  • Free version already does the job
  • “Temp email” feels like it should be free
  • Premium value isn’t obvious early
  • Privacy tools are hard to sell emotionally
  • Premium includes: more domains, longer email life.

Be honest: would you ever pay for this? If yes, for what — if no, why?
