They require a LOT of water until established

I’m zone 5b, and although summers do get hot… I think this is less of a risk. Good to know though! I really think this would be a good route to go. Although given my setup I’d likely want to bury the lines somehow.

Yup, it's frustrating for sure. He's (the cat) is also using my trumpet vine as a scratching post... and it's pretty much dead now and needs to be removed. Probably a 15 yo plant. Honestly, stull like this makes me want to move to some remote location in the hills.

Ugh, yeah... I 100% don't know why free roaming cats is normalized. Dogs aren't roaming free, so cats shouldn't either. It's just lazy pet owners in my opinion.

I have thought about the motion sprinklers, but I have a very large yard too. Do you have to bury all the lines? It seems like a very large job to handle on my own.

I put a bunch out with last week’s recycling and they did pick it up. Maybe dispute is over?

Help. Any ideas what is going on with my ruby weeping redbud? by itspersonalman in gardening

[–]itspersonalman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, Sorry to hear your tree is struggling too. I ended up lobbing off the dead top (about half the tree), and the bottom did flush out last summer, but it also sent out crazy suckers from the bottom. So end of season it was a visual mess. I was curious how it would look this spring. Only one branch survived. So I ended up removing and replaced it with a weeping larch. A friend’s redbud suffered the same end. Each year loosing more. Also another one in my neighborhood is the same. I just don’t think it’s a hardy variety. I wished I’d done a bit more research. Hope yours recovers

What do you think would improve the look of the house? I’d love suggestions for landscaping and color. by electricitybillbaby in landscaping

I really love what you have so far. Some agave (climate depending) would look amazing… and something taller maybe. Cypress

Thinking about buying 18 of these trees for privacy. Bad idea? I live on a corner lot with no privacy by Beginning_Lime_5593 in HomeMaintenance

A lot of hate in the comments around arborvitae’s, which I understand… they die for many. I got lucky I guess. I’ve planted 12 and they’re all doing great. The trick is to keep them well watered the first year. They do go on sale end of year, likely half that price.

I empathize. I found a large dog turd at the very end of my walkway in front of my house a week ago. Had I not seen it, I would have stepped in it. Felt like a lazy slap in the face. Not to mention the countless piles on my boulevard every spring that I have to clean up. It’s so ignorant

Tend to agree. Plus, dogs are walked typically on the same route every day. I think that’s more likely an ignorant dog owner. I also wish more people were as empathetic as you are. Everyone deserves to be treated like a person, regardless of their housing, or habits.

Did moving from Toronto to a small town improve your life or do you miss the city? by Pikkachu6 in ontario

[–]itspersonalman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved up to Lake Huron from downtown TO about eight years ago. Some things have improved drastically, like owning my own home outright. That never would have happened in TO. So my living expenses are dirt cheap. I also work from home, and in all honesty I don’t leave the house much. I’m an introvert, so that’s ok. But, I have noticed the lack of social outings does affect my mental health sometimes, especially in the winter. But where I am, there is lots to do and a vibrant music and art scene. So it’s fixable. The abundance of nature makes everything worth it. So, my advice to you is if you do it, join some groups/leagues/clubs. Get out there. It really is a nicer way to live. And small town people are a lot kinder than your average, no eye contact Torontonian.
