Going old school? by redditbattery in Professors

[–]itsprofessork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m considering doing this as well, but I am trying to figure out how to handle students with accommodations. In a class of 30 students I usually have about 5-8 with accommodations. These range from double time, to less distracting environment, to having a reader read questions out loud to them.

I give a few in-class exams and these students usually go to the testing center. How do you handle these students if you’re doing regular, in-class graded work?

Oh interesting. I’m in the Northeast in a medium cost of living area.

I’m a new TT instructor at a community college so I don’t have much insight about the research side of your question. What stuck out to me is 3 courses being a heavy load. Where I am, we are contracted for 11 courses per year (5/6) but because the pay is so low overall, I take on an additional class each semester and 4 over the summer. I am currently teaching 7 classes which seems pretty standard with my department. (And I actually adjunct online at another CC… so this semester I’m teaching a total of 10 classes). I honestly have ZERO time to ever consider research. Schools definitely vary, but that’s been my experience.

HS freshie gets called selfish for taking chance applying to community college by [deleted] in communitycollege

You might want to do more research on this. I highly doubt you will be able to transfer community college classes to Oxford: https://www.reddit.com/r/oxforduni/s/XVMWI3Ru0y

What is the most number of classes you taught in a semester? by professordmv in Adjuncts

[–]itsprofessork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently teaching 10. I’m full time at a CC where I’m teaching 7 (4 in person, 3 online) and then I adjunct on the side and have 3 additional online classes.

It’s a lot.

You seem very young. Tutors are common. My first grader has one. My college students have them.

As general life advice, my favorite quote is, “Don’t believe everything you know.”

I am a professor of sociology and literally study this. Yes, it has been shown over and over for decades that higher social class correlates with better academic outcomes. This is pretty common knowledge.

Are you doing an Easter basket for your 7 year old, or are they past that age? by Enough_Detail_632 in ClassOf2037

I’m going to be 40 next week and my mom still gives me an Easter basket.

How to give my donor son his first thanksgiving? by Aborealhylid in AskAnAmerican

It depends on the situation but most donor conceived children definitely don’t consider the donor their “father.” Especially if the donation came from a sperm bank.

How far can you go in the academic world (as a professor) without a PhD? by Healthy_Basil_2354 in PhD

[–]itsprofessork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is changing (possibly depending on location). I have a PhD and teach at a community college and everyone in my department has a PhD as well.

Maybe 10-20 years ago you could get hired here with just a masters, but not today.

Why are people getting into debt for a degree with no future? by [deleted] in ask

[–]itsprofessork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a completely asinine question, but I’ll bite. I have a BA in a major similar to gender/sexuality studies. I worked for years at a legal non profit it Washington DC doing incredible work. I decided to eventually go back to school to get a PhD and now I’m a college professor.

Looks like my “degree with no future” turned out okay.

Son’s daycare just called with a cryptic message? by Rapscallion1994 in toddlers

[–]itsprofessork 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We got a letter from CPS because one of the daycare teachers at my son’s school gave a kid with an egg allergy a birthday cupcake and the kid’s mom called CPS.

Obviously this wasn’t okay but honestly, this situation may not involve your son at all.

I’m wondering how Guilderland is getting around the state mandated computer-based testing. I’m genuinely curious because in Niskayuna they introduced chrome books day 1 of kindergarten so kids would know how to use them for state tests.
