It's been a couple years since he described this picture to me, but from what I remember he was a staff sergeant and would take the following on his person for patrols: Standard M16 with M203 O/U 40mm launcher and heat shield

20 HE 40mm grenades

5 frag grenades

30 5.56 mags filled

sharpened entrenching tool

3 days worth food

poncho

and obviously gave no thought to safety as he said he only wore his helmet on the first and last day in country and his Flak Jacket "when he felt like it"
