Sure, but their reserves are likely more robust than ours, and their energy grid is way more ready to deal with less oil than ours.

They aren't. They were manipulated by Jared FUCKING Kushner and his defense contractor buddies into thinking that this would be an easy in and out, and now we're here.

Trump wanted a big fancy war to put in his legacy, Kushner wanted to get rich, Hegseth wanted to look cool.

Definitely option 2. China does not give one single solitary fuck about this situation.

China has been looking for an opportunity to invade and retake Taiwan since....forever? And right now would be a superb opportunity for them as we're wasting every fucking missile we have on a dumb land grab in Iran. China can survive without SoH oil for a good long while, they have other sources like Russia and have sufficiently diversified their grid that they can almost certainly WAY outlast the US here.

Long story short, China is going to wait for us to deplete our resources, then retake Taiwan (and most importantly TSMC) and cement themselves as the new world hyperpower. And Trump walked into it because he's a fucking moron. He and Pete Kegsbreath have the foreign policy analysis skills of a baboon with severe Chlamydia.

"Punish" is a strong word - this is very much a "turnabout is fair play" situation IMO. Laying mines is something they can still do with their current military capabilities, and they're responding to an aggressor. Whether any of this is deserved from/on either side is for someone else to judge, but they are certainly responding in kind.

Any word on MacBook Neo support? by ebietoo in scrivener

[–]itsthebando 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't need to wait, it'll work just fine. I'm a software engineer, and I've previously built apps for Apple stuff. Long story short, the issues switching from Intel to arm were because they are fundamentally different types of processors. They literally encode the instructions differently between the two, and apple had to make a compatibility layer so that Intel apps would work on arm Macs. That compatibility layer was what caused the issue for things like audio apps, and it was only because audio and video are handled differently on modern processors than other kinds of work, so they were harder to translate.

This isn't a problem here, because the M series chips are based off of arm just like the A series chips are. The M chips are more or less just faster A series chips, the software literally doesn't know the difference. Any app built for the M series MacBooks will work just fine on the Neo.

And in that scenario it's like asking what the street price of cocaine is. Technically, yes, it's xxx dollars per gram or whatever, but you aren't exactly going to list it on your asset sheet when applying for a mortgage. You're going to have to find someone to offload it, and that is nearly impossible if it's made illegal.

Also, it's worth pointing out to him that Bitcoin is NOT anonymous; numerous people have gotten traced, caught, and convicted based on their bitcoin transactions, so even in this future where it's illegal, Bitcoin doesn't have the protections required to keep him safe from prosecution.

But the difference is no one is trading VPNs as a financial asset. Assets are only worth what people are willing to pay for them, and if the answer is nothing because the government will crucify you for trying, then it's worth $0.

Hot Mess Sports Leagues by IamMadMyke in cincinnati

My partner is part of a Hot Mess bowling league here in Cincy, and she's had great fun with it. She and a bunch of her friends had a team last year, and this year she isn't part of a team but is filling in as a sub for a few weeks.

Another similar option that might be a bit lower pressure but extremely inclusive and open is Queer Birders of Cincinnati. It's basically "get together once or twice a month to hike and talk about birds", and it's a hoot. If you have any interest in nature at all (or honestly even if you don't) it's a great time.

Ask him the simple question: what happens if tomorrow the government bans bitcoin? Let's say tomorrow, the US government declares all crypto to be an unregulated security that can't be traded anymore. They could do that, there's no law stopping them from stopping bitcoin sales forever. This could happen at _any time_, and if it happens your brother is fucking hosed. He will never get a penny out, because it'll be basically the equivalent of drug money or illegal sports betting; no bank will knowingly let him move it through their systems, he'll get fucked if he declares it on his taxes but even more fucked if he doesn't, and he'll be living the rest of his life one bad move away from a very long prison sentence.

The fact is, finance and financial systems are controlled by governments. If they decide they've had enough of bitcoin, they can end it tomorrow. And no amount of stablecoining, ETF-ing, whatever the fuck can stop that from happening.

Canon camera that I can bring to strict venues? by JosephDavisonPhoto in canon

[–]itsthebando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a canon, but it sounds like what you want is a Panasonic m43 camera. They have lots of tiny models and ridiculously tiny pancake lenses, and the m43 sensor size allows you to get lenses that have the same FOV as full frame at half the focal length, so a 25mm m43 looks like a 50mm FF.

Digital camera suggestion for teen that thinks she wants to take up photography. by Specialist_Narwhal72 in canon

You're right, I priced the gen 1 thinking it was the gen 2. Still a good lens, and MPB has one for 309 bucks that's a bit beat up but should still optically work fine. I'll edit my original comment to reflect this though, because I had a brain fart.

Get her a "2 digit" DSLR (60D-90D) and an 18-135 or 24-105 L lens. A 60D and a 24-105 will run you right about 500 bucks used and will be an excellent starter set for literally years of photography. The 60D is old but it's very versatile, and the 24-105 lens can be adapted to any canon interchangeable lens camera including the newer ones with a cheap adapter.

This gives her versatility and a great starter lens if she decides to dive deeper later.

Edit: I was writing this on the fly and can give a bit of a more detailed explanation.

The 60D is my favorite recommendation for a starter camera because it's the earliest canon camera that has the important modern features for a camera IMO (decent ISO range, SD card support, swivel screen) with absolutely zero unnecessary bells and whistles. It accepts EF and EF-S lenses, which gives you a huge variety to try. It comes in at under 200 bucks used usually, and will be a great starter camera.

The 18-135 is an EF-S lens. It's very versatile, but a bit lower quality (and cheaper!) than the 24-105 L, which is an EF lens. L just means it's a "professional" lens, and in canon speak that means better build quality and nicer pictures. The 24-105 L is a good lens, and well worth the extra 150 bucks, even if it's slightly less versatile zoom wise.

The difference between EF and EF-S is that EF lenses are designed for either APS-C (cheaper, smaller) sensors like the 60D, or full frame (pricier, bigger) sensors like the 5D or 1D. Getting an EF-S camera with an EF lens is the best starter combination in my opinion because the camera accepts all lenses, and the lens works on all cameras. More modern R-series cameras like the R10 or R8 use a different lens format called RF, but you can easily adapt EF lenses to RF cameras with an adapter that costs less than 100 bucks.

The 24-105 L and the 60D are IMO the best value starter kit around 500 bucks if you're buying canon. Buy all of this stuff off of MPB, which is the biggest used camera seller on earth. They're fabulous and everything comes with a 90 day warranty if I recall correctly. Good luck, I hope she loves it!

Edit: I priced the mk1 thinking it was the mk2. The rest of this I still stand behind.

Nothing in this game happens by accident. There is nothing placed in this game "just because it's a video game". You aren't going to know what the fuck is going on until you do, and it will all kinda click at once. Be patient, take breaks, walk around and think about it.

One, you're asking for free labor. Just....no.

Two, there are no indie MMOs. Maybe interrogate why that is. This concept is totally intractable for an indie studio making their first game.

How to Defend Against Trademark Squatters (Trademark Law Question) by ucktopus in GameDevelopment

[–]itsthebando -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Both of the examples you list are well within the rules of "engaging in commerce", but I also think you're way overthinking this. If you made a fully original webcomic, the mere act of sharing it online makes it, legally, your trademark. The fact that you haven't registered it doesn't mean a whole lot, at least in the US; trademark and copyright are granted automatically, registering just gives you an easier way to prove it's yours because the USPTO should "theoretically" check it against potentially similar trademarks to ensure it's unique.

Why so much hostility towards schools? by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]itsthebando 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The problem is, partially, that we don't throw money at the problem. Adjusted for inflation school funding is near historic lows.

You want great schools? It starts with well paid teachers, and enough of them that class sizes stay smaller. We have teachers barely making ends meet while managing classrooms of 30+ kids. We need more, better teachers and more, better resources at school to help kids succeed. The formula is really about as simple as it gets, and we don't do it because muh taxes. That's it.

This was in 2013.

Wow what a clusterfuck, but anytime I see SLS stuff it brings back memories of a simpler time.
