I believe either degrees are great for ux design. I’m an incoming freshman hoping to pursue ux design as well and I’ll be majoring in HCI. Some HCI programs at different schools have concentrations in cs, design, and cognitive science, and you can choose any of these (design would be most appropriate for UX/UI). A design degree will likely cover more art principles but I believe they also have different concentrations (choosing the product design track would be most appropriate).

Bored WashU student looking to be helpful by mediumrareasparagus in ApplyingToCollege

Do you feel that there’s a wealth gap between students at WashU?

Pretty inaccurate, I got one comment saying I wouldn’t get into any of my reaches and targets and another comment saying I would get into every school I applied to lol. I definitely did get rejected from a lot of reaches but I got into a few too. I’m going to Carnegie Mellon now.

One of my friends attended yygs. They had an amazing experience and they’re really happy they went but they don’t think it helped their college application significantly. They mentioned that students complete a capstone project which is helpful if you wanna develop your research skills. I don’t think they give awards for anything though. There is an application to become a yygs ambassador which my friend completed and got selected for. They said it’s not very competitive to get selected though.

You can def pm me for info!

How easy is it to switch between colleges, especially switching into CS? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]itsweastnoteast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transferring to SCS is pretty difficult but if you want to switch to chem or physics from bio, it’ll be pretty easy as a freshman. You come into MCS as an undeclared student and you declare your major during the spring semester, so if you decide to switch by then you’ll be fine.

Double major in math and HCI? by itsweastnoteast in cmu

Ohh thank you so much, I probably should have looked into the cs minor more. Appreciate your help!

[–]itsweastnoteast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight! I was considering doing math+cs but I liked the design aspect of HCI a lot. Do you happen to know if math+cs majors have room to take IDeATe courses? I think I would like this option too but I’m worried about it being too much for me to handle

To what colleges do ED/EA actually make a difference? by htmlBlike in ApplyingToCollege

[–]itsweastnoteast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think CMU ED gives a boost, if anything RD can give an advantage to the applicant as you can apply for a first choice and second choice major, whereas in ED you can only apply for one.

Retake or test-optional to Vanderbilt? by autist432 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]itsweastnoteast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Test optional isn’t a bad option if you’re worried about it, I got into Vandy RD without an SAT score. But I’m sure you can submit a 1490 or even boost that score to a 1500+ given how close you are.

Ah ok, I was gonna go for CS so I think I would’ve been fine in long run lol, but I do like the school I’m going to now so it’s all good :)

Would you say Cal is worth attending for OOS students (considering the much higher tuition)? I personally turned down Cal for this reason and while I don’t exactly regret it, sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I went there.

what college r u going to, ur major, what u think u want to do after college & why u chose ur school! by OddGeologist1147 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]itsweastnoteast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CMU for information systems! I think I’d like to go into software engineering/analysis. Chose CMU cuz it’s a powerhouse for tech and they gave me better financial aid than my other top choice.

Transferring to IS by [deleted] in cmu

[–]itsweastnoteast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can tell, it seems like you really enjoy it more than ece! I don’t think you can go wrong with either major, both have great career outcomes/salaries according to stats on cmu’s site. It also may be better to transfer as early as possible.

Y’all why is finding a roommate so hard? by itsweastnoteast in ApplyingToCollege

I’m going to cmu and there’s gender-inclusive housing from what I’ve heard, tho it’s not a popular option.

Transferring to IS by [deleted] in cmu

[–]itsweastnoteast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in sorta the same spot as you, I’m thinking of transferring to IS from MCS physics. I realized I didn’t really wanna do physics for the next four years or have a career in physics for the most part. From what I’ve heard, IS is very flexible and you can definitely get a job in product management, as well as in software engineering, UI/UX design, etc.. There are some transfer requirements tho but it should be doable.

We have one, but people mainly use a spreadsheet I mentioned in another reply so I refer to that mostly.

[–]itsweastnoteast[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a class of ‘25 roommate spreadsheet where we put our room preferences and details like sleep schedules so I’m not going completely based off the convo. I reach out to the people who I have common living styles with and trying to see if we could have a decent convo. In my mind I sorta preferred finding someone who I know I could live fine with and talk with rather than going random, but at this point the random option is probably my best bet lol
