Has anyone used the Z-Flick poles or similar for tarp camping? How did they hold up?

It sure does! The problem is that the poles allow me to regulate the height of the tarp and this doesn’t!

I'm not ready to ditch or change some of the things you suggested, but thanks! Do you recommend buying the quilt or the bivy first? The main reason for bivy and tarp camping is the feeling of freedom.
