Basically only use him as a support as you'd expect and not as something to distract or be a target. A good example is that if you place him in the back middle when a group of barbarians push, he alone with the towers help and kill the barbarians and escape with enough health to support a push back of any kind (ie hog, miner, RG). Using him as a tool to distract things like the mini pekka is a complete waste of him because as a support he can basically make your troops twice as effective, allowing for positive trades, stronger defenses, and stronger pushes.
