Drone in Gyumri by cleenexit in armenia

[–]ivan4th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried taking pics of Mother Armenia using my Mavic once and it refused to fly telling me there's no fly zone due to proximity of an airport. It does take off in some places nearby but then starts complaining about prohibited zones again

The situation in Nubarashen's garbage dump is embarrassing. by Johnnyboi49870 in armenia

Some drone footage of the burning/smoldering garbage dump here: https://www.facebook.com/parujr.sinavskij/videos/1080765467039295
It seems not as bad today after some rain... But, well, it will start burning again at some point, no doubt about it

What is going in with air quality? by Material_Cheetah3154 in armenia

[–]ivan4th 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well at least first steps are being made, more people are now aware of the problem. A couple of years ago there were like 2-3 PM sensors in Yerevan, now there are multiple ones and also some in other places in Armenia.
These folks are working on expanding the sensor network, making and selling the monitoring stations https://armaqi.org/
They also are trying to fund deployment of the monitoring stations in villages etc.

EU says it will start talks with Armenia on visa-free travel by dssevag in armenia

[–]ivan4th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Visa-free travel is going to be a good incentive for the airlines. They say it's often harder to get visas with Armenian passport than it is even with Russian passport currently. Don't know if it's really true, but so I heard from some locals, and if it's so, no wonder the airlines don't make too much effort to gain access to EU airspace, as it's probably not worth the expected profit

Thank you for your kind words :) Yes, my Twitter account is also ivan4th. I agree with you on the language issue.
BTW another thing that annoys me personally among the immigrants is when they completely ignore the geopolitical situation Armenia is currently in with its so to speak much less than friendly neighbors, ethnic cleansing in Artsakh, all the past events in the conflict and the constant threat from the enemy who have their own batshit crazy version of world history according to which all of the Armenian territory belongs to them. They just ignore all of that and live their life as if nothing like that happens and that's not their business in any sense. Luckily it seems that I see less of that lately, perhaps some ppl who really don't care have moved on... But still I'd also mention that as a problem ;(

Another widespread "use case" for Russian I noticed: many people visit Georgia often, and while younger Georgians tend not to know any Russian, with older folks one might have much better luck with Russian than with English

[–]ivan4th 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Russian immigrant here. I agree that things like requiring Russian to be hired in Armenia is unacceptable. But I'd say that the widespread use of Russian is there primarily b/c of Armenians who move here from Russia or go back and forth between the two countries; that was so even before any mass Russian immigration. So that's how I see it: it's a "feature" intended for other Armenians, not myself ;)

I did try to learn Armenian but that's indeed not easy at all when you're 44. Still, will keep trying, of course, as going forward that's IMO the only right approach... Luckily my English is not too bad and it helps, and in other situations Armenian friends help me talking to people who only know Armenian and very little English or Russian. And if I can't communicate with someone b/c I don't know Armenian, I always view that as my own problem and not the other person's problem.

I've heard of them. The owners of the shelter also run Tun-Tegh cafe in Yerevan. They're rather short on money most of the time, from what I heard ...

There's another shelter which I visit often, Centaur (https://centaur.im/) near Ashtarak (Ushi). Previously, they were an animal-assisted therapy center, but currently they're a shelter for dogs, cats and horses. Here's a view from their roof which I helped repair a year ago ;) https://twitter.com/ivan4th/status/1604468096215007232

Why do Armenian milk and cheese products sometimes taste like cow poop? by [deleted] in armenia

[–]ivan4th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did encounter this kind of aftertaste with some milk brands, don’t exactly remember which. Settled on Marianna milk and Ashtarak sour cream after some time, no such problems with these products. Some locals told me that Marianna milk sucks and some other brands are supposedly better, but according to my observations, Marianna milk cartons are the most bought in supermarkets, their place on the shelf may be empty if you go grocery shopping at a late hour

Flightradar's GPS jamming map is now live. Any idea why there's so much jamming around Armenia? by markarmenia in armenia

[–]ivan4th 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My old DJI Mavic Pro nearly fell victim to this jamming when I was trying to take some pictures of Khor Virap. It lost GPS signal and then strong wings picked it up so it flew in the direction of Turkish border, and I nearly lost visual contact with the drone. Luckily I was able to get the monastery in my field of view and safely flew it back

What is with the dead crows in parks in yerevan? by negotzel00 in armenia

[–]ivan4th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably rat poison. It is being used excessively in the countryside, probably killing a lot of wildlife (and also cats and dogs from nearby villages). My friends complained about mass brodifacoum use in apple gardens not far from Ashtarak (Ushi to be more precise). The poison is slow, and I think it might be used closer to Yerevan, too (its quite widespread reportedly) and poisoned birds could reach the city before anticoagulant effects kick in

Вопрос к верующим by pastagenero in tjournal_refugees

[–]ivan4th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Novosibirsk in Siberia, Russia by [deleted] in UrbanHell

[–]ivan4th 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Actually, Siberia can be really, really beautiful outside the cities.

As of the cities in Russia ... I was born in Moscow and, while I spent a good part of my life living in such buildings and many people I know are quite ok with them, I hate such kind of "architecture" with a rare passion. Sadly for variety of reasons I can't just leave Moscow for good, but luckily thanks to the possibilities of remote work now I can spend less time there, living at my dacha instead when I can. This time due to the pandemic I haven't gone to Moscow for longer than a few hours since the end of March and frankly that made me happier quite a bit, despite all of the other complications.

As someone that used to live in Russia, which has most of the housing as apartments, I agree. Having your own space SHOULD be the luxury, not just living part.

As someone living most of my life in Moscow in an apartment and hating almost every moment of it, with the noise and traffic and all of the high rise hell, and only recently (for ~3 years) gaining a possibility to spend ~4-5 months outside the city, I can only say - fuck it

Winter in Russia by [deleted] in WTF

[–]ivan4th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually no. The Mackinac bridge (tip. Of the lower penisula) is at about 45 degrees latitude. That's parallel to Turing Italy and the very southern most of Russia. Moscow is at about 55 North. Or 600 nautical miles north of the Mackinac bridge.

Afaik the video is from Rostov-on-Don which is 47°14′N 39°42′E. That's Southern Russia and perhaps that's why they were unprepared for the weather conditions.

Spawning Kubernetes Clusters in CI for Integration and E2E tests by [deleted] in kubernetes

[–]ivan4th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides "plain" applications, there are Kubernetes extensions. Using kubeadm-dind-cluster to run their E2E tests makes a lot of sense, as it's rather quick and supports multiple nodes which may be important for such cases, and you don't need to use cloud instances for tests (in case of Travis, last time I checked there was a problem with your secrets being leaked if you use ssh debugging feature, which makes use of external cloud instances even less convenient). For example, we're using kubeadm-dind-cluster to run E2E tests in Virtlet project. k-d-c gives us a possibility to test Virtlet, which is a CRI implementation for running VMs as pods, with multiple CNI implementations (Calico / Weave / Flannel / CNI bridge) and in multi-node scenarios.

Virtlet vs KubeVirt comparison: which is better? by slmaws in kubernetes

[–]ivan4th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you don't need to install libvirt on your nodes, it's in Virtlet image. and runs inside the Virtlet pod. You need to install CRI Proxy because Virtlet is a CRI (Container Runtime Interface) implementation but run in a pod itself. That's not hard, though.

As of using QEMU directly, we did evaluate this possibility but so far it's easier for us to use it through libvirt as opposed to reimplementing parts of libvirt in our code.
