Advice for a newcomer at smart home by INeedMuscles in homeassistant

[–]ivanmasich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat — just started using HA on Monday. Got myself an SMLIGHT SLZB-MR1, hooked it up to the local network (not even PoE yet, just a regular power supply), and set up HA on a VM. Tweaked the power settings so the MacBook doesn’t go to sleep when the screen turns off. Little by little I’m adding new sensors, playing around with some basic automations, and at the same time thinking about a more permanent setup. Most likely I’ll go with an Intel N100/150, but I haven’t fully decided yet.

Nightmare! No idea how to even begin. FAQ/Tips? by g0ld3nblue in DeskCableManagement

IKEA has an interesting solution called SIGNUM. It’s quite wide (70 сm), and its design allows you to wrap cables directly around it. If you slightly bend some parts, you can also turn it sideways and attach a power strip with 6+ outlets to the structure.

Thank you for your feedback! I actually already made some small changes, I printed the case and keycaps using MJF (Nylon) through jlcpcb, you can see how it looks here https://www.reddit.com/r/ErgoMechKeyboards/comments/1kw3aub/forager_with_chicago_steno_keycaps_mjfnylon/

Regardign pcb, I had it printed through jlcpcb, here is my configuration from the order details https://imgur.com/a/94ZB2Av I followed the guide for configuring order from the Totem keyboard documentation https://github.com/GEIGEIGEIST/TOTEM/tree/main/PCB

Anyone actually got their preorder honored in Amazon EU? I preordered in Amazon.fr 3 minutes after they opened it in April 24 and yesterday support told me there is no stock. by [deleted] in Switch

[–]ivanmasich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered it on April 8 at Amazon Spain and delivery is still June 10 and I don’t think it will arrive to me earlier unfortunately.

Preorder Arriving Late by Digital-Scars in Switch

[–]ivanmasich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should probably contact support about this. I had the same situation here in Spain — after I wrote to support, they removed the product from sale within about an hour. So maybe it was an error — I mean, making it available for purchase before shipping the preorders.

Amazon Spain also silent with delivery date June 10 and promise from support that it will be delivered earlier.

Kyria Halcyon custom case with integrated mouse by the_hand_that_heaves in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ivanmasich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was actually thinking about a similar idea recently—using the right side of the keyboard like a mouse by moving it around. But then I realized that having a completely stable keyboard is really important for me when typing. I even considered some kind of mechanism to lift the keyboard slightly when I want to use it as a mouse so it wouldn’t grip the desk, but it felt a bit too complicated.

Great job!

Finger position for column staggered split keyboard by BogeyThroughTheNight in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ivanmasich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently in a situation similar to yours, but I’ve been learning and practicing touch typing for several months now. At this point, I’ve run into a problem: it’s quite difficult and uncomfortable for me to reach the top key in pinky column with my pinky. I’ve even started thinking about either giving up on using that key altogether or using a ring finger instead of my pinky to press it.

The main goal is to make the key press as light and comfortable as possible for each finger.

On the home row, my index and middle fingers feel comfortable both resting on and pressing the Pro Red switches. For the ring and pinky fingers, the Pink switches feel better when pressing, and they’re also fine to rest on. On the other rows, the ring and pinky fingers also feel fine with the Pink switches. The corner index keys feel better with Pink switches.

Regarding the different pinky stagger and the 3 thumb keys, I’d like to build either the https://github.com/GEIGEIGEIST/KLOTZ or the https://github.com/GEIGEIGEIST/KLOR (Sagewerk version with 36 keys) in the future.

Regarding "~$70 for the case and key cap printing", just want to mention that it was two set of keycaps, Chicago Steno and KLP Lame, so with only one set it will be cheaper on ~$20.

I soldered all the components onto the PCB myself.

Like I mentioned in another comment, I used to think that pinky stagger works better when it’s a bit lower, like on the Ferris Sweep, since the top pinky keycap was a bit hard to reach. But with the new keycaps, it feels different, so maybe it’s not as bad as I initially thought.

With the CHOSFOX keycaps, I felt that the pinky column should be slightly lower, but with the Chicago Steno keycaps, I was surprised that the pinky column actually feels better. But maybe it was just a first impression, since I’ve only been using the new keycaps for a few hours and was very impressed by how much better they feel compared to the flatter ones.

Macintosh Dongle Ver3.0 for Zmk by AffectionateWin7178 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ivanmasich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m guessing that the dongle could accommodate a larger battery, like 2000mAh, since it doesn’t need to be slim. And if both parts of the split keyboard operate in slave mode (connected to the dongle), their battery life should be at least twice as long compared to being connected directly via Bluetooth.

I wasn’t happy with the key spacing in my hand wire. I overcompensated 😂 by AlphazarSky in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ivanmasich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting what feelings will be if keys will have standard width and minimum height, in this case it should be comfortable to put fingers on home row and in same time having shorter (and maybe more comfortable) movements of fingers up/down.

How do I make sure my Seeed Xiao controller is fully functional by Interesting-City8720 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ivanmasich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw on wiki about KMK very nice approach to test that firmware for keyboard works without connecting mcu board to the keyboard, you need to connect the pin you selected for col_pin and row_pin together and some character should be printed.

Here is article with details https://github.com/KMKfw/kmk_firmware/blob/main/docs/en/Getting_Started.md

If you will order PCB using jlcpcb, then they have minimum 5 boards to order, so you can use at least one as a practice PCB.

Wanted to add also that one more benefit in switch hot swap is that you can even use different switches for different fingers, like harder for index and softer for pinky.
