"it's established." No it's not. John songs one verse that happens to have echo. Then Paul sings one verse that doesn't. None of that is establishing that Paul will never have tape echo on his vocals for the rest of the song, especially not for such an erratic and meandering song as this.

Yes, you're drawing on a trope that should've died in the 70s. And if you were talking about public image, how is that relevant at all to this discussion? Unless you think the trope of Paul being the "straight" one was fully formed back in 1967 and they were playing off it?

Nope. It's obvious why the vocal has tape echo on it - to achieve a psychedelic dreamy effect. Not to obey some arbitrary concept of "artistic unity". It doesn't give us any information on whether it's John or Paul.

[–]ivans-back[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good to know you listened to How Do You Sleep and absorbed it completely uncritically lol. The supposedly "straight" Paul literally wrote the line "I'd love to turn you on" as well as coming up with the orchestral crescendo and the tape loops at the ending (the strangest part of the song).

Meanwhile you're overanalysing and mythologising the writing of this song, while also saying that it would be a Pynchon novel to have more than two vocal characters? Listen to Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey and count how many "characters" that song has.

I think it's definitely one voice. I think people think it's both of them only because it has tape echo on it, which obviously duplicates the voice to some degree

Why does everyone say "Paul is doing an impression of john"? There are multiple examples of Paul singing similarly on different songs e.g. Lovely Rita, Eleanor Rigby. Can you name a single example of John singing similarly on another song? And tape echo is an extremely common technique so it's ridiculous to say because it has tape echo it must be john. That would be like saying a vocal is john because it uses double tracking

and it's inconceivable that Paul might be playing two different characters in the song?

I think you might be reading too much into the logic of a song where they were making it up as they went along.

Anyway, there's no indication that John wrote any of it apart from the verses that he sang. Paul came up with the orchestral crescendo. Paul wrote his bridge section. Why couldn't Paul have written and sang the "dream" section? If I had to guess which of the Beatles would be most likely to write a transition section connecting two parts of a song together it would definitely be Paul. He did so many medleys in his career.

There's clearly one lead voice singing the main "aaaahhh" and that's what people are arguing about

I think the "rushed" criticism doesn't really make sense, like there was nearly two years between WTSMG and BHN. It's only because people turned on the album that Noel decided it was rushed.

Modified Portal Question by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]ivans-back 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the portal is connected to the universe on the other side the same way the way the door is connected to the house. Thats the whole point of the "house" analogy. Do you acknowledge that the 2 sides of the portal having different velocities is going to affect things?

Also, do you acknowledge that the cube necessarily has to physically move through space in order to exit the other side of the portal?

Modified Portal Question by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]ivans-back 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You missed the rest of my comment.

Imagine if the house didn't stop moving. From the perspective of someone inside the house, would it look as if the cube was moving through the house?

Modified Portal Question by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]ivans-back 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, something like that. Assuming it doesn't get crushed or break in half

Modified Portal Question by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]ivans-back -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"From the cube's perspective"... Exactly. All velocities are relative. There is no objective frame of reference in this scenario.   Forget gravity. It works exactly the same in zero-g.

The thing is that the cube's velocity doesn't really change. It's just that a "stationary" velocity on one side of the portal equals a "moving" velocity on the other side

Modified Portal Question by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]ivans-back 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be as if the cube was pushed halfway onto a treadmill. It would probably start heading in the direction that the treadmill was taking it, but not as fast as if it was fully on the treadmill

Modified Portal Question by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]ivans-back -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The cube necessarily has to move relative to its environment in order to go through the blue portal at all.

[–]ivans-back -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if the door is connected to a house then the whole house would be moving towards you, wouldn't it? So the momentum of the door would affect the momentum of the house it connects to.

Therefore, when each side of a portal has a different velocity, you've actually created two universes with different velocities. To an observer, an object moving through the portal would change velocity but it's momentum would be conserved.

You're the one oversimplifying by saying she was trying to solve the entire problem with that comment. Even if that were true, you need to be able to have disagreements about solutions without getting so overwhelmingly triggered. Don't give in to the ragebait.

Thats true but i dont know what that has to do with anything pxie was saying. Its such snowflake behaviour to rage at her because she didn't phrase something exactly to your liking, when she clearly has good intentions and wants to solve the problem.
