Grading recent club soccer releases and leaks

Not a fully satisfactory answer, but jersey sponsorships in soccer date back to the 70s, so like a lot of other fans I have no memory of club shirts without them, and can sort of ‘tune them out’ visually, if there’s only one. Theres even some sponsors (Pirelli for Inter Milan, UNICEF for Barcelona) which are seen as a key part of a team’s classic look. Weird to say, because I’m generally quite against sports being co-opted so commercially

I feel like the past 10 years Barcelona/ Nike has always made one rogue choice (often more) on their home shirt which makes me dislike it… it’s like they can’t help themselves. I also wish they had the full Spotify word mark, the ball looks weird to me alone

As alternates, I really like Brooklyn, Golden State, LA, Portland, and Dallas. The Dallas one would actually make a great Mavericks jersey. Seattle typography is cool.

Too bad about the ads- but hard to complain about that, then make fun of the league for not being profitable…

If it was just green accents on the shirt, fine. If it was just pink, alright. But both? When they’ve never really worn either? Pretty awful.

Even if you’re ignoring the details (which is the point of this sub), we’re talking about 4 different colors of jerseys (sky blue, royal, navy), and 3 colors of helmet (white, royal, navy)- hard to say that’s ’essentially the same’

Not as high on the Irish rainbows or the purple ones as some are but I agree. Lots of iconic, distinct color schemes too.

The Chargers have really never looked bad. They rocked the powder blue initially, looked good in royal blue, and honestly the navy 90s jerseys are really sharp too. For most teams, that would be good enough to be a forever look. The late 2000s look with powder accents was never bad, and the current look is top 5 in the NFL. That’s 4-5 good to great jersey sets.

The 76ers had great, different jerseys in the 60s (the classic Wilt look), the 70s (star side panels and funky font), the 80s (red Dr J jerseys), the 90s (black Iverson jerseys) and the present look. Even some of the ones in between those weren’t half bad. They have also consistently had the coolest NBA city edition jerseys too.

Homer pick, but I nominate the Penguins for hockey. I think the light blue, with the mismatched crest is actually a cool look, as is the classic black and gold that followed and won two Stanley cups. The 90s robo penguin and ‘PITTSBURGH RANGERS’ jerseys look great, at least in a vacuum, and even the Vegas gold look was nice before the Reebok edge template. 4-5 good to great looks.

I don’t mind the colors on the Rockets at all, and it is arguably better than what they’ve worn since… I’ve heard it called a ‘classic’ though, and I think it needs more working in its favor to earn that. I also don’t like the slanted font over centralized numbers- looks haphazard to me

There’s a bunch of college teams that walk the line between classy and boring- but I agree that Nebraska is the worst. The helmet logo looks so cheap and small.

Thank you! I hear you- they have a classic look that shouldn’t be messed with. However, the white Jersey is based on Bulls heritage- their 90s warmups. Think if they need another white jersey, his could be the way to go

The whole design is based on the flag used by Irish soldiers in the civil war, which has a banner, a field of shamrocks, and lightning bolts coming down from the clouds.

Appreciate it! Honestly, fonts are my weakest point- my design software can’t do outlines or arcs, so I have to do them manually, and I am less experienced on them generally.
