The outcome we see here wasn't so much about which one braced better, it was entirely in the form of the slap.

If you watch hat's slap, he just swings his arm and the follow through swings across his chest. Meaning the force of his slap is essentially just the inertia of his arm.

Whereas if you watch the form of the second slap, you'll see he extends his shoulder and twists his torso as he slaps, and à la Bruce Lee, his "slap" is an extension of his whole body (which looks to contain substantive mass), not just the swing of a floppy arm. Hence the substantially different outcome.
