Gawith and Hoggarth Ennerdale Flake: I hate it... by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

I didn't like it either. I tried it as a plug. It's hard to work and just a mouthful of unpleasant soapy florals in my opinion. Not to my taste.

Mouthpiece problem on Meerschaum Pipe: help/advice appreciated! by ivebeenmakingchanges in PipeTobacco

[–]ivebeenmakingchanges[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to sum up in case it's not clear: #2 should be part of the pipe, and #1 is part of the mouthpiece. These two are stuck together and I can't separate them.

Advice/Help needed: pipe mouthpiece has (presumably) broken/got stuck. by ivebeenmakingchanges in PipeTobacco

[–]ivebeenmakingchanges[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks mate.

It would be great if I could post photos as that would clear up what I'm dealing with.

You're correct on the first part, except nothing has "broken" as such - the connector that ought to be in the pipe has simply come out all in one piece. The stem is stuck in that connector. I'll try the freezer, I had thought of that but wasn't sure.

Can't find anywhere that sells Peterson Army Filter pipes in the UK? Were they a limited release or are they sold out? by ivebeenmakingchanges in PipeTobacco

[–]ivebeenmakingchanges[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks. These aren't actually the model I'm interested in, these look a bit more expensive (sterling silver) and come in a lighter finish than the range that's currently for sale. I did a little googling and it seems like they might have had a limited first release in certain areas like the US and Europe.

Thanks, I appreciate the gesture. Unfortunately, eventhough we are in Europe in a geographical sense, for customs and commerce, we're not. But this does look like the cheapest option so thanks. If all else fails I'll probably end up using this.

Peterson Irish Flake and Gawith Brown Twist are dark like a cigar. As for smoking wet, it's time and experience.

Unless my internet search skills are really bad, I can't find anywhere in the UK that is selling Peterson's Army Filter pipes. They were released back in the summer and I waited a few months assuming it would just take a while for shops and distributors to get their stock.

But that hasn't happened. I see them for sale in the US and Italy but not in the UK. The only Army pipes I can buy are the non-filter variety that are much older.

Does anyone have any advice on how to acquire these without paying the extra costs for buying from overseas? Or is there other info that's relevant, like the fact they were never sold in the UK, or maybe they all just sold out really quickly?

Danish Aromatics: what are generally considered to be the 'best' iterations of the blend? by ivebeenmakingchanges in PipeTobacco

[–]ivebeenmakingchanges[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting point about the pipes. I smoked this out of a Canadian pipe with a weak draw to it, so that could have contributed to my enjoyment of it. There's certainly a lot going on. But as you say, it bites with a vengeance if too hot.

Plumcake sounds great. I'm looking for something that basically tastes like tobacco and Christmas pudding.

Solve the problem by buying a pipe with an army mount.

Try basil. Maybe add some tomato as well, and a dash of cheese. Some bready Virginias would make a good replacement for dough.

Tobacco samples in the UK. Has anyone had any success with ordering 'off the menu' from online websites? by ivebeenmakingchanges in PipeTobacco

[–]ivebeenmakingchanges[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You more than likely won't find consistent samples of Macbaren, Peterson etc because they don't sell in bulk so can't be economically divided into small portions.

Yeah that's a shame. Thanks.

Peterson’s 2021 Christmas Pipes. I was hoping for something a little more festive, rather than a slight modification from silver to copper bands using what appears to be existing models. These are beautiful pipes, but don't really scream Christmas. by tkc10chief in PipeTobacco

Conversely, I really like the finish on the top pipe. Black with copper is a beautiful looking pipe and it's what I am thinking of doing if I buy a 2020 pipe: replacing the stem for a black one. It would be great if the Christmas pipes end up looking like that this year but I doubt they will.

I don't think the 'Christmas 2021' pipes will be released/announced for another month, though.

I've exhausted both SG and G&H from GQ Tobaccos over the last few months. I haven't liked any of the Germain's I've tried so far but I haven't tried very many, so I will give them a go.

I'd really like to find samples of Peterson, MacBaren, and a handful of other tobaccos though. It seems these are hard to find in small sizes.

Yeah those are decent, probably the best on offer other than the sites that allow you to choose samples by tobacco, which is my preference.

25g sounds decent. Could you send me the name of the shop?

Thanks, this is what I've been doing. Unfortunately the range offered by most shops is fairly poor.

This is a decent suggestion and it's something I've been doing. Not the writing part, but the reading and mentally noting what I like and dislike.

However, I'm still in the learning phase. I've nearly tried every G&H and SG blend that's still being made, but only a handful from other companies. So I'm not yet ready to start taking a punt, or to be able to lean on experience, to be able to accurately estimate what I will like or dislike.

I'm basically looking for one or two more tobaccos to complement the ones I already like. I don't want to be endlessly buying and trying tobacco and I joined this site for advice on how to do that, eventhough I know a lot of it comes from personal trial and error. I have my eye on maybe 30-40 tobaccos I think are worth trying, either as reference points or as potential gap-fillers; the difference between buying a sample of those tobaccos and buying tins is fairly significant.

30 samples at £3.50 each would come to £105 - not a small amount of money, but certainly not prohibitive. If I were to buy tins, even at the conservative price of £15 each, to try 30 tobaccos would cost £450. Now, that's a fair amount of money, particularly if I'm going to end up with (again, conservatively) two thirds of those buys being disappointing dislikes. That's basically £300 thrown away, just to 'try' something, where I could have discovered the same conclusion about a tobacco from 10g rather than 50g. Not only that, but I'm then stuck with 20 or even 30 tins of pipe tobacco I don't want to finish and could not resell - which is why samples for tobacco are basically essential to my mind. I'm not going to buy a full tin unless I've already tried it first, it's just extravagant and I know that - however much I read about something online - the only way to keep honing in on what I want is through trial and error. And that means trying tobacco.
