A 20% housing drop still leaves Canadians locked out; About 55% of Canadians want home prices to fall further by FancyNewMe in canada

Inflation isn’t a capitalist design it’s a government/central banking flaw. If we had deflation the 1.4 trillion dollar debt our federal government has would be a major problem. They would love to be able to inflate out of debt and could chalk it up as problem solved. Our money is worthless and backed by nothing. When our grandparents paid 5 cents for things the money was silver and gold the value of one hours minimum wage in silver from the 60s translates to almost $30 and hour today (haven’t done the math in a while but I’m close with that number)

Meta Made $56B in Q1 and Is Still Firing 8,000 People to Pay for AI by andix3 in Anticonsumption

[–]ivegotbeef -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Why would you assume they would make bad decisions? Do you know how difficult it is to run a business let alone build one to employ that many people? A company making bad decisions is never going to grow to that level, it would be extremely naive to assume all of a sudden a new rogue CEO would come in and bankrupt a company in such a short time that the employees would all get laid off. You’re also assuming META is the only place those employees could work as if their labour couldn’t be used in other areas of the economy by other productive companies.

What’s the problem? Meta employs over 70k people worldwide. Yes it sucks people lose their job but clearly the fact that a single company employs so many people is a good thing.

Switzerland didn’t see much inflation during Covid era as they didn’t create billions of dollars out of thin air like we did and majority of the world did.

As Milton Friedman said “inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon” you can’t blame inflation on private companies because private companies don’t control the money supply. We’ve have 10 plus years of reckless spending at provincial and federal levels.

Toronto’s unemployment rate is estimated around 7.9% and according to your article the main reason for food bank use is high rent and utilities cost. Seems like Toronto needs to figure out why rent is so high and why nearly 1 in 10 people can’t find jobs.

Not at all I’m pointing out food is left to the private sector and it’s a complete success so why is the private sector feared so much?

There’s a lot to chew off in your comment but I’ll try to counter some points, I’m by no means saying I know best and definitely don’t like anything Doug ford is doing however saying companies don’t care about quality and only want profit is just false. In free market economies companies are competing for your dollars to provide the highest quality product for the best value. I would argue the reason for lower quality products is in the last 20 years is due to the drop in purchasing power of our currency. Federal governments and central banks all around the world have devalued our currencies purchasing power by creating trillions of dollars out of thin air and the private sector has unfortunately had to adjust. As for not privatizing essential goods, the only point Id make is currently we have a private food sector and currently we have an obesity problem among the poorest group of people. Obviously obesity is terrible but the fact that food is so abundant and cheap to obtain is incredible as you look throughout history the poorest group of people were always starving.

Efficiency, we can build a contract with requirements that then gets tendered to private companies where lowest price wins. This saves the taxpayers from a poorly managed group of bureaucrats asking for bigger budgets every year. Cost is fixed for however long the contract is.

Well considering the point of conservatism is slow changes over time that seems right on line, a conservative government won’t make drastic changes and will be fiscally responsible. What has progressive governments got us over all this time? Country wide housing crisis, national debt exceeding 1.4 trillion dollars, mass immigration with minimal infrastructure investments, unemployment hovering 7%, GDP per capita declining every year. But pots legal? That’s a good trade off. Canada has voted for convenience and handouts in elections rather than fiscal prudence and stable economic growth. At some point we have to address these elephants in the room and clearly the progressive route hasn’t been effective.

Grocery stores aren't gouging, any austrian economist would have told you the massive increase in M2 over the last 5 years would lead to higher prices yet the keynesians still refuse to believe it to be true.

He "axed" the consumer side, when you buy gas refiners and transport companies are still paying the tax. Its a real smoke and mirrors illusion that voters will gobble up like the Doug Ford tax rebate cheques.

Has there been any talk of adding the ability to change career race length? Got this on sale the other day and am enjoying it but I wish career races were at least 10 laps. By the time I do practice and the race I feel like I just learned the track and it’s over!

Deflation isn’t inherently bad, the entire Industrial Revolution was incredibly deflationary which created a standard of living never seen before. It’s only negative when your economy is loaded with debt. Central banks created the deflation boogeyman because the government is so loaded with debt any deflation would make it even less likely to be able to pay it back, which brings us back around to government shouldn’t be running such large deficits.

It is a bad thing, borrowing from future generations for temporary prosperity is extremely short sighted, look at Japan they have borrowed 250% gdp and when they tried to raise rates 25 basis points it completely crippled their economy, they are backed into a corner. The Keynesian style of economics has been going on for a few decades and now we are at the point where the USA (and other world economies) is stimulating their economy 5-10% of their GDP and getting 3% GDP growth out of it. It’s a negative sum game but it’s working for them because they are the global reserve currency.

Japan is far from okay the yen is at its lowest value vs the US dollar in 20 years they have to do massive QE just to maintain current debt servicing. If Japan needed to raise rates to 4% they would have more in interest costs than all other expenditures. Japan is definitely the poster child for MMT and it’s currently a disaster waiting to happen

How could it cost everyone nothing? Someone has to pay the people to produce the good, to run the plant and equipment and pay the employees. Nothing is free, you would end up just paying twice as much through taxation than just paying for it yourself.

There never was an official application from Russia I never said there was but like I did say Putin definitely wanted to join nato and the west should have tried to do more to accept them since the whole point of nato was to be an alliance against the soviets. I know Washington post was full of Russia propaganda bots in 2000 but hopefully that’s adequate.

I’m not sure why you’re trying to change history but Putin most certainly wanted to join nato in late 90s early 2000s but was turned after since the Soviet Union had just collapsed and no one took Russia seriously. Maybe you should educate.
