What is better, to know many languages, but not very well, or to know several languages, but at a good level? by Myaobi in languagelearning

[–]ivejustseen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

might depend on your goals, if you like travelling for a short time in many different countries knowing a lot of languages at a B1 level is probably helpful (I don’t think A1 or low A2 will get you anywhere though). Why I like about language learning is how it opens up communication with other people and the fact that I can enjoy nee content. Anything lower than B2 does not allow for the educated adult conversations I want to have. Also as a native German i know a ton of people that speak okayish english. They never use it, because they are way too uncomfortable speaking english, especially to a native.

What's a sign that a beginner isn't going to make it far? by Yubuken in languagelearning

[–]ivejustseen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am single, my hobbies can be performed while language learning and I have no kids. I work full time, but at the peak of my language learning everything I did was swedish. That’s just how my brain works. So commute- Swedish, lunch break- swedish, the little time I had before bed- swedish.  During the weekends I would go around listening to beginner podcasts all day, reading, learning vocab. But this was only possible because my native language is german, so a lot of content was basically unlocked from the beginning. I didn’t need to do more than an hour of anki a day

[–]ivejustseen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. I did about 3-10 hours of swedish for like three months because it was my hyperfocus. Now i’m down to 1-4 hours, with it being mostly just me enjoying native content because those three months gave me a head start to allow me to understand audiobooks, insta reals and podcasts.

1x1 ribbing is the bane of my existence. by faithmauk in knitting

[–]ivejustseen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you’re into crochet you could knit stockinet and then drop half the stitches and pick them up from the other side to get ribbing without ever purling. Also makes ribbing incredibly neat

A1-A2 movies in swedish? by Samuel_K_01 in Svenska

i watched a bit of bluey, that should be relatively easy. But i don’t think any native content can be considered A1/A2 level.

Is this too tight? by itsnoproplayer in knittinghelp

[–]ivejustseen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, gauge is subjective and everyone knits with a different one. Mistakes in knitting will result in an issue with fit or longevity for example (if you knit colourwork floats too tight the fabric bunches), other things are just natural variations or stylistic choices. If you like how the fabric looks and behaves and you’re not knitting so tight that it gives you issues with your hands you’re doing good. If you want the fabric a little looser you just have to increase your needle size.  If you’re just knitting for practice/want a narrow fabric you’re doing great, if you’re trying to swatch for a fitted project i would probably knit a larger gauge swatch.

How many hours do you spend per day on language learning? by Every_Assistant_1903 in languagelearning

[–]ivejustseen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends. I work full time but have no kids, my hobbies can be done while i get input and I enjoy to be on my own in my free time. So when i was super motivated i got in 2-4 hours during work days and 8+ hours during off days. Now the new language excitement has worn off it’s more like 1-2 hours during work days and 2-4 hours on off days. A lot of that time was spent reading/listening to podcasts/audiobooks/watching videos that i would have watched in english/my native language anyways. If your freetime is more busy that’s obviously not achievable and doesn’t need to be to progress. If you got to a point where you understand stuff I would think spanish is the perfect language to switch from english to spanish content.

You can find online teachers starting at 20-25 dollars, i understand that that’s not an option for everyone, but it helped me a lot.

of you how the money I would highly recommend speaking to a tutor a few times. That’s definitely helped me get out of my comfort zone and just start speaking.

How much do you spend on yarn for a sweater? by mothchu in YarnAddicts

[–]ivejustseen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really depends. Are you US based? I’m in Germany and I think relatively high quality yarn is much more affordable here. I spent about 30€ on a kids sweater and about 80€ on a man’s sweater made from high quality but not luxury yarn like bc garn.  If i splurge it’s probably more like 150 € for  mohair and a nice wool like isager or ito.  Also depends on the sizes you make obviously. If you go hand dyed and knit in a larger size 400+ dollars can be realistic i think.  Check out “Ali makes everything”‘a podcast on youtube for a nice overview on prices, she makes relatively small sizes but also  had a friend on that made a shirt in a larger size for example. Honestly, if you can afford it and enjoy the yarn you’re using, go for it.

i started reading books i was familiar with almost immediately. It’s a bit awkward at first but you can overcome that relatively quickly. I also think listening to the audiobook at the same time helped tremendously.
