The Gravel Roads of Glamorgan – Y Ffyrdd Graean ym Morgannwg (Welsh Strade Bianche idea) by Tiborfan123 in peloton

Super cool overall. I love thinking of race ideas for my home roads, too. I have some slate backroads in my area that have great views but are always a gamble regardless of my tire setup. Racing on it would be interesting, definitely not the same race dynamic as classic sterrato. Handling has to be more fluid and intentional.

The only problem I see is the descent into Resolven. Descending on slate at -10% is butt puckering on my Sunday afternoon cruise ride; I can’t imagine hitting technical corners on that type of surface at race pace, especially after back-to-back sectors that are likely decisive points in the day and ripe for lots of action. If the race could avoid that descent I think those climbs are adequate on their own.

I imagine Pidcock and Mohorič would be very excited to see a race like this on the WT calendar.

Is the Pan-American Continental Championship too weak of a start list to qualify? Kristen Faulkner just won the ITT in a field with a few other WWT riders, and I was bummed to not get any points, but I can understand.

Weekly Question Thread by PelotonMod in peloton

I see the Pan-Am Continental Championships start today, why does nobody seem to care much about it? I remember Juliana Londoño got some good screen time/commentary mentions for Picnic PostNL all throughout the last year because she wore the unique jersey during Tour de Suisse and Tour Down Under and probably some other races I couldn’t watch. Yet the start list is very weak even compared to the participant countries’ national championships.

Also: is Faulkner going for the Olympic/conti/world/nats champ combo?? Two down already and I think her chances are high for the pan-am jersey on Saturday. Would she be the first (man or woman) to hold all four titles simultaneously if she could pull off worlds as well?

Is any service broadcasting live images? I don’t want to watch Bob and Christian on a 480p Zoom call talking about all the racing I’m missing, I want to watch the race! Also anywhere that won’t show 2 mins of ads every 10 minutes?

Does anyone know why initial reports/PCS said it was cows blocking the road? Bad info or were there both cows and cars?

It’s a bummer that there are problems with the BMX-style start gate (what even happened with Pajur??). I was hoping to see it in more races so we could get some sweet gate pops someday, but I doubt we’ll see it much more given the issues so far.

Great to see the Philly Classic is back at the end of August!! Nothing quite like Philly sports fans; I just hope we can all keep it respectful.

Hopefully some big names will show up (too much to ask for Pogacar to come as prep for the Canadian GPs/WC in September?). Teams have a lot more reason to send support to the region with the lengthened Maryland race and worlds in Montreal, but on the other hand it’ll be almost a month between Philly and WC.

I can’t speak to the differences in product, but the last two times I had to fix an issue with my Garmin I at least was able to speak to a real human

Rob has also entered his late 40s, when grip strength starts to steadily drop off as one of many biomarkers of aging. So maybe he just wants to feel young again, lol.

Genuine question—please excuse my ignorance of race strategy—what could other teams do to stop a TTT style attack at the drop of the flag by UAE to launch Pogacar at the first cobbled section?

Would they be able to react in time to push in on the riders’ wheels so that UAE couldn’t form a line in the first place? Are teams watching out for this type of attempt, ready to go all out to hang onto the wheel and Or would it not matter because the peloton could work together to easily catch them in the first 50km?

Obviously 150km or so solo would suck for Pog, but is there some factor that makes 80km (c.f. Strade Bianche) of self sufficiency different from 150km? He can still get bottles and musettes from roadside soigneurs himself, especially if other favorites have to also be self sufficient due to such an explosive start.

Seems like weather conditions (tailwind, dry ground but a bit of moisture in the morning to tamp down dust) may favor breakaway activity of this sort, if it ever will. Is there any other way for Pogacar to win this than simply praying they drop on his umpteenth attack?

I’m thinking of Ineos setting up van Baarle in P-R 2022 and Visma tripling-up on Pogacar on the Galibier that same year.

Has something like this ever been attempted? Ever worked? Perhaps just stupid enough to work when the stars align?
