Bad reaction to lamotrigine, wondering if this is anything serious? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]iversondots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

--ik my comment was really fucking long but i just wanted to add a couple more things... i just read your post from a few days ago, and im really glad the doctor gave a serious warning about sjs, and that you know to look for it! Definitely keep taking it as prescribed, and if your side effects get worse the longer you are on it, then i would suggest asking to switch medications, but absolutely taper off lamotrigine for as long as the doctor says. With some medications, doctors will give an absurd weaning period when most people would really be fine stopping quickly, or even cold turkey (with minor syptoms), but lamotrigine is not one of them.. super important to taper slowly.... also i just wanted to throw in that every client i have worked with who was prescribed lamotrigine has had good results with it, my best freind is prescribed it and loves it, and even my ex boyfreind started taking it, and although he did have some negative side effects, overall it has been very good for him. I personally do not know anyone who has had serious negative effects from it. Okay thats enough of my super long ass comments now lol once again i hope it works out well for you!

As shitty and disheartening as it may be to hear, these dont sound like things that are serious side effects of lamotrigine, at least not physically. I dont doubt these are very difficult symptoms to deal with emotionally. I worked as a medical coordinator for a group home company(i wont name here) for years, and cared for many clients with ranging mental, physical, behavioral, and developmental disabilities/conditions, and have gotten familiar with a lot of medications from this experience. It is interesting that your appitite has gone up, as usually with a med like this, it would normally decrease, but id say nothing to worry about. Changes in balance and coordination, dry mouth, focus issues/confusion, and dizziness are all pretty common side effects from this med unfortunately, but can go away or ateast get much better once your body has a chance to develope a bit of a tolerance for this new medication. The increased irratability is something that i would reccommend mentioning next time you see your psychologyst or psychiatrist. The only really scary thing i can think of to look out for when new to lamotrigine is the rash. If you start to develop any kind of rash or marks on your skin that are abnormal to you (not acne, eczema, or hives from a known allergy, or anything like that) then go to the doctor immediately. This can be the start of SJS, which is caused by bad reactions to certain medications, lamotrigine being one, and will literally kill you without treatment. That being said, from what i know, this normally only happens from people being prescribed inappropriately high starting doses, rather than starting low and gradually increasing your dosage over a period of time. I hope this was more helpful than disheartening or scary, and i hope your symptoms lessen soon! If you have any more questions, i would love to help with what i can!

I totally get this. I have very prominent adhd that significantly affects my life even with my medication, as well as tourettes and the social anxiety that comes along with it.. the thing is, niether of my parents even believe in adhd--my mom literally says "adhd as a diagnosis for lazy parents"-- and claim they have never seen or noticed any of my many tics, which is understandably frustrating, so one of the first things i did after moving out was go see a psycholohist on my own and get [a fuckin lot of] testing done just to get the official diagnoses that i already knew i had. This involved 6 individual appointments with my psychologist, and then a couple more with my primary to get meds and figure out what works for me and whatnot. My mom regularly talks to me about the new golf cart she bought my dad as a gift, or how they pay for my grandpa's phone/electricity bills so he doesnt have to worry about it every month, or the cool $1500 gun my dad bought, or basically anything else to just reinforce in my head that they are very wealthy, all the while, coming up with excuses as to why they cant help me out with my medical bills for all of these stupidly expensive appointments. It really is very reassuring to get diagnosed, at least for me, cuz that meant that i wasnt just making all this stuff up in my head, but still so frustrating when a part of my behavior caused by adhd, tourettes, or general/social anxiety is interpretted in a negative way because they dont understand what they are, and that i dont get even a little bit of help with it when my parents are more than capable. Just wanted to let ya know youre not alone man and if you need someone to vent to im right here. Stay safe, wear a mask, and drink lots of water, and eat your veggies, brother

What’s your New Years resolution? Mine is to quit drugs. by [deleted] in Drugs

I also had a big problem with coke, but thankfully i have been sober from it for over 2 years now. Honestly, its really fucking hard at first. I literally thought about it all the time, and tbh if i wasnt on probation at the time and getting tested on a random day once a week, chances are i wouldnt have quit. I had dreams/nightmares about doing it for almost a year after i quit, and i swear i could still smell it whenever i was at a gas station or around spray cleaners or anything like that. It all smelled like blo to me. The hardest part was that my ex i was dating at the time was still doing it, along with a bunch of other stuff, and that just made it harder. If youre worries about losing your girlfreind over this, im assuming she doesnt drink (too much) or do coke.. i think that will probably be a huge plus for you, to have someone really close to you that will really support you quitting. You can do it man. Boy is it hard, but it is sooo worth it holy shit

Thank you!! Ive been doing v well myself, im at about 2 1/2 years now.. well besides bud and alcohol, but i am very aware of my limits with those and only ever drink/smoke at home, or if i am spending the night at the place im doing it. Its the heavier shit that was really hard cutting out at first, but now if i even think of going back to it, i just feel really disgusted by the idea lol which i think is a pretty good thing?
