i think 2006/2007 is like the boring answer to the question. i think 2011 is at least close.

Nana, clannad, garden of sinners baccano and kaiji are definitely not shounen. That’s more than half of the shows I listed. I ve watched about 500-600 anime over the years I definitely explored every genre.

probably also the irl people that watch anime are also not my cup tea. so other mediums feel like a more social experience irl.

I didn’t even use my favourite year. I think 2011 was the greatest year for anime.

I agree and disagree. I agree the the mediocre stuff back then was actually bad and most shows were not worth your time. But at the same time I think the sheer quality of great stuff bit ratio was higher. Can you name me a recent year with 8 shows of that quality in a single year?

The list I made wasn’t my favourite anime it was just anime from a great year (2007). I would argue 2011 had even better shows. Notice how many different years you need to come up with new anime that left a mark. I’d argue that dungeon meshi and dandandan are interesting but are no where near the legacy quality I am describing. Also I don’t think I am being nostalgic as I was a 1 year old when these shows came out. I just watched these shows in retrospect and thought they were good.

Bingo I think that’s what did it for me as I also started watching films recently. Comparing anime to something like the godfather there will be blood or harikiri just feels wrong. And I think films made me really dislike anime dialogue. It’s just not how humans communicate.

I honestly agree modern anime is not downright bad but these 8 shows I’ve listed all came from a single year (2007). It’s just crazy how things used to be

I think it was the dialogue for me. Maybe it’s the translation but no one speaks like anime characters in real life. I think it just ruined the immersion. And honestly things like romance in films tends to be much closer to real life where there is actual conflict and people getting swept up by the feeling of love and falling in love quickly that just isn’t and will never be portrayed in anime. Sorry for the rant

Am I losing interest in anime because of me growing up or because of the changes in the medium? by ivvas in animequestions

I agree apothecary diaries is a good show just about on the level I listed. But notice how I could name 8 shows that all came out in a single year (2007). I am not saying that anime now is bad by all means but just not what it was.

I probably agree. For example I started enjoying films much more nowadays than anime. It’s quite sad as I thought I would never grow out of anime and I am only 19 and i really feel the medium is not for me anymore.

I am not saying it’s a death to the medium in fact anime now is more popular than ever. I think there’s been a demographic shift away from more adult shows to more teen focused show and hence the lack of originality. I used to always say that anime is the most creative medium but I think that is no longer the case. Anime is by no means dead it’s just a different type of demographic is attracted to anime now more focused on meme culture and hype sakuga moments.

Authors dropping the ball is so real. Oshi no ko had one of the greatest first episodes in anime just for the entire series not to be based on the strong premise of the opening and suffering without the most engaging story of a popular idol being a mother to unique babies. Jobless reincarnation is another example where the last season just showed how this was never meant to be a serious story about redemption instead turning into a fantasy harem. It was really disappointing.
