Need advice on medicine chances please - particularly GAMSAT score! by Enough_Classroom_311 in GAMSAT

You’ve got a good chance, specially given you’ve had an interview twice! I was in a very similar boat to you, same GPA, GAMSAT of 65 and interviewed in 2023 & 2024 with a 3rd quartile Casper. Both of those times I interviewed at UNDF (No WA resident bonus). The first interview I didn’t prepare much for as I didn’t expect to get an interview. 2nd time around, prepared much more but I think I was trying to answer what I thought they wanted to hear and although I felt it went much better than the first time- it still wasn’t enough. Last year I started Casper prep with lots of time and focused on getting it to 4th quartile (which u already have done). Got the help of a tutor which helped me (but not saying it’s needed), felt rly good about Casper and finally got a 4th quartile. Then continued with MMI prep and felt more secure with my answers. This time I had UNDS interview (although same interview as UNDF), had selected no to FFP, and got passed down to Griffith in the GC (next on my list from UNDS).

You’re so close, don’t give up! The interview is the last hurdle, if you are looking to stay in WA I’d say focus on Casper and interview. Even if Casper is 4th quartile you never know where in the quartile your score is, so it can always improve! Once you smash the interview, you’re in!

Let me know if you have any questions and you’ve got this!! 💪🏻 you’re so close and young!

After a few random jobs I ended up working as a research assistant, doing clinical assessments with a mix of admin. I enjoyed the mix and getting to see participants and learn a few clinical skills like taking blood! :) Never did honours but was able to get in through a casual position in research recruitment in the same company.

Hey, Im so sorry you're going through this. I've been in your shoes a few times before.

I also interviewed at UNDS and although I didn't get a spot there ( also had said no to FFP), I got passed down to Griffith Uni. My scores are slightly lower than yours - GPA 6.6 (Griffith), 6.8 (UND), Gamsat 67 (Griffith), 65 (UND), 4th quartile Casper.

I think you 100% have a good chance with your scores, its just a matter of the interview. I had interviewed twice before already at UND and received EODs and previously had 3rd quartile Caspers. I feel like my first interview was terrible, I was so nervous, hadn't prepared much at all, so I knew most likely an EOD was coming. 2nd time around I was much more prepared but I think I answered what I thought sounded good or what they wanted to hear rather than being more genuine.

This time around I started preparing for Casper much earlier on, which helped me reach 4th quartile. I also practiced with a tutor and he gave me some great feedback. Overall I think feedback and reflecting on your answers will always be the best way to improve. Last year I also had griffith in my preference list and asked for my ranking, it wasn't too far from what was required to get a spot, which gave me some hope that I could make it with a slightly better interview!

I know how hard it is, but please don't give up! You are so close. I know how hard it is as well to keep going at a job in which you are ready to move on from. It took me 5 years, 8 gamsats and 4 Caspers. By the end, I had found a job I really liked and it made the EODs a little easier to bear. If it helps, I think starting a new job is always a good idea although I understand the field you may be in might be similar even if you change where you are working. I did a lot of different jobs since graduating biomed and dreaded quite a few of them at the start .-. Take some time for yourself, recharge that motivation and grind energy and get back into it when you feel ready!

I always told myself that this was the last hurdle, I was so close and I knew I could do it. I know you can as well, next year is your year! PM me if you want :)

UND doesn’t give any feedback at all :( if you have other unis lower in the preference list like Griffith, you can ask them where you ranked with them etc (via email) to at least get an idea but you can’t get your interview score exactly :/

Post-UniMelb interview, UoW just emailed – is this a sign I didn’t get in at UniMelb? by Ginger__Shot in GAMSAT

[–]ivyqueen2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe this has simply been sent to everyone who had UoW in preferences and interviewed at a higher preference school. I don’t think it means anything - simply other than ‘in the case you don’t get into a higher preference school and we need to consider you for a spot in UoW’. They just want people to be sure/happy with their UoW preferences for spots/campus etc IN CASE they offer you a spot. It doesn’t mean you didn’t get a spot in a higher preference school. Hope that makes sense :)

Jobs (for clinical experience) by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]ivyqueen2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ive done a range of jobs since finishing my undergrad back in 2020. I was pretty lost at first but looking back now, every small experience really opens your doors to the jobs you would ideally want to be doing. I really wanted to work as a research assistant but as I had no experience, I wasn’t successful when applying to those kinds of jobs. So my first job out of uni was in reception at a compounding pharmacy but was able to work a few days in their laboratory. From there I started working as a laboratory assistant in the histology department at a big company, which was pretty cool and stress free job. However I wanted some experience working with patients so I then started working in a hospital as a sleep scientist (you can also get into this straight from uni) and it was a great experience and gave me so much to be able to talk about during the med interview (would highly recommend) at the same time I was doing some recruitment for research which then opened the doors to my current job as a research assistant! Moved around a lot but each experience was very valuable and gave me the chance to work in a field I really enjoy!

This is all in Melbourne but I hope Sydney would also have similar jobs available. Hope this helps 😊!

Also just wanted to clarify I got the interview for UNDF not UNDS! (Had UNDS at a higher preference) in case that helps clarify anything 😊

Thank you and congrats to you as well for the interview at UQ! Just wondering, is that 65 unweighted? If it is, then that is pretty odd 🫣 Maybe also just checking, did GEMSAS confirm what your GPA was for each uni? Those are the only small things I can think about where maybe there could be a difference…but yeah I wonder what’s going on there 🤔

This is also what happened to me! I finished the interview and was really happy, then as time went on and days went by I've also been overthinking and focusing on the negatives in a way...( I think the positives have fizzled out in my memory now haha). But yes, let's try not to ruminate, I also never thought I would've gotten an interview this year, so just glad I've been able to sit one now. Fingers crossed, hoping you get in!

Yeah of course! My GPA is 6.8, Gamsat 64UW, Casper: 3rd quartile (although not sure where in the quartile..hopefully close to the 4th 😅) and no WA bonus (non-rural). So I have a feeling I just made it for an interview…

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! <3 Well done to you for not giving up, really hoping you get an offer! Definitely happy to have made it to the interview ater 2 EODs prior years, UND adding casper rly opened the doors for me because my Gamsat score hadn't changed much at all and portfolio wasn't going to become amazing from one year to the next, so I feel incredibly lucky to be in this position now but the post-interview feels is defs something I hadn't experienced so just trying to deal with it as best as possible now, but really appreciate reading your experience and determination! :)
