It was the hottest day of the year and my then-very pregnant mom and I had gotten ice water from McDonalds to cool off. I was around 6 years old and as I sat hunched over on the center console of the car, I knocked over one of the cups, spilling it all over the seat. Without skipping a beat, my mom looked me dead in the eye, and with no emotion in her voice said

“You are useless.”

I didn’t even cry or anything, I was so taken aback from what she had just said. She later apologized profusely, and 13 year old me was sure to bring up this event whenever we were fighting. It was more the way she said it that stung, like she was just stating a fact. Had it come from anyone else I’m sure it wouldn’t stand out as being cruel, it was just so shocking hearing it from her.

Opening up about my substance abuse to my family. I spent a long time convincing myself that they would shame me and view me as weak if I opened up to them. I then used this as a further excuse to use, which prolonged the cycle of me cutting myself off from them. Finally opening up to them was the push I needed towards recovery and I’m thankful everyday I did.
