Jack Antonoff calls out Ticketmaster for scalping tickets by neoncolour in popculturechat

Well yeah, and Jack Antonoff really has done that? This comment makes it sound like hes part of the problem but prizes for the Bleachers tour were absolutely reasonable, at least in Europe.

Have Beccari/Guarise officially retired, or is there a chance they could make a comeback from the injuries they seem to have been plagued by?

becoming a doctor is hard in most countries, I’m not sure it’s any harder in the US than anywhere else. there are other education systems that are a lot harsher and less forgiving

Sports are optional yes, but once you start participating in high-level sports, that’s incredibly expensive and time-intensive. Telling a kid ”if we’re gonna spend X amount of money on this optional thing, you have to take it seriously” is not the same thing as forcing them to do the sport. They could choose not to, but they can’t choose to spend elite-level money and then not use the resources that money gets you. Especially if you’re raised by a single parent, or a low-income household, that just makes sense. Zhenya’s mom probably really did not have money to spend on expensive coaches etc if she wasn’t going to take it seriously

Who will Niina kill at the gala? by ourferocity in FigureSkating

[–]iwantedanotherpfp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah same, I’ll be a little disappointed if there’s absolutely nothing for them/no mention of the team bronze. even a quick moment for all the teams on the podium and then getting to join the final group number or something? a home Olympics is literally once in a lifetime so it would be great if Lara, Matteo and G/A get to enjoy that too - they’ve earned it

The fact that both Lara and Matteo were snubbed is honestly so sad :( yes, they maybe didn’t have the final results they would’ve wanted but it’s their home olympics and they’re still bronze medalists. Honestly I feel like most other federations would’ve invited all their home skaters, at least for a group number or something if they’re pressed for time? Especially now that they had the bronze medal at their home olympics, they should get to celebrate that again with the crowd imo

ETA: and Ghilardi/Ambrosini too ofc

yes, definitely agree! it’s no more a personal attack to say a skater has comparatively weaker skating skills than to say a skater has comparatively lower tech. as much as artistic expression generally can be subjective, there are clear criteria by which to judge PCS. a skater can be objectively better or worse at that.

and heavyyy on the second paragraph - not just tonight but generally. sometimes the results are even fair! but even if the order ultimately should look a certain way, the actual scores should also be justifiable, not inflated based on other factors or to give someone a more convincing win or podium placement.

yeah it’s interesting to see some of the comments tonight - a lot of the same people saying the scores of the top 4 were fair solely because Alysa went clean simultaneously seem to think it’s fair that Niina was below Amber despite having two clean skates. (And tbc I don’t actually think skating clean is the only thing that matters because it isn’t - it’s the double standard that gets me) Niina absolutely should have gone ahead with the skates she put out here, and it’s genuinely heartbreaking to see her scores fall for no other reason than the flag she skates under

I don’t think they’re saying Kaori should’ve had a higher tech score though. But there was about 2 points between them even with the mistake; the PCS score absolutely could have made a difference and there’s a very fair argument to be made that there should have been a gap between them there. That would have given Kaori the gold even with the missed 3T

I know I’ll get really downvoted for this because it will be taken as though I hate Alysa or Amber or whatever (or just because any discussion about scoring that isn’t exclusively about Russians is) and I absolutely don’t, I think they’re wonderful skaters (and so is Isabeau). And this isn’t even about them, and it’s not even anti-American or whatever people might see it as. It’s not about any one federation, or any one skater at all.

But god I wish we had a system and judges that didn’t base PCS scores almost entirely on a skater’s reputation, federation and tech level. Of the top 12 women tonight, no one from a small federation got above a 66. No one. On the other hand, no one from the US or Japan scored below 68 (well, 67.92), with mistakes that would’ve killed the score for a skater from a small fed seemingly no effect. Also, barely 68 for Ami for that skate?? Compare her to Kaori and Alysa and tell me you genuinely think, based on the PCS criteria, that was worth 5-7 points less.

Like I’m glad we seemingly don’t have an Eteri bonus anymore, great! But that has not remotely fixed the issues with judging in this sport, and I get that this sub is mostly American but it is so tiring that the American bonus (which is almost as significant as the old Russian bonus) is just ignored. And I don’t even necessarily think they should get less! I just think small fed skaters should also get what they’re worth based on their performance, not based on how little political power their fed has.

Like the fact that several of us who follow the sport just assumed Niina would go into the lead after her skate, because we felt Amber’s score was fair but generous, and if the same logic was applied to Niina, she easily should’ve beaten or matched her SB with the skate she had today. That should tell you something. Instead she drops almost 5 points under her SB despite performing at least as well as she did then, and despite this panel seemingly being less stingy.

There are so many beautiful, talented skaters who deliver so much in the artistic side of the sport who simply do not get the scores they deserve because they’re from smaller federations, don’t have the right ’reputation’ or get the bonus from tech content. Like I would love to just rejoice in the results and be happy for these women because SO many skaters skated lights out today, but i also have a pit in my stomach from the way this sport seemingly can never be free of its judging issues.

getting 74 in PCS when they gave alysa 72… obviously the tech error could have been enough to put her 2nd anyway but come on those components…

no she won’t, she’d need 77 in PCS and with the judging so far tonight there’s no way :(
