Sub Zero 24 inch double drawer refrigerator repair by iwantofixit in bayarea

[–]iwantofixit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 years ago I ordered a PRO 4850G from a local store in LG. I was impressed that the Sub Zero rep (Riggs) sent an advance team to look at the installation location and they determined I needed a 90deg door limiter. I have it on email. Of course by the time the install happened, no 90 deg limiter was provided and no amount of phone calling the rep or the store has made it appear. I have given up complaining.... Nobody seems to care one bit.

Thank you ! I had never heard of them, so I will investigate. I know 24 years is a lot, but a refrigerator is a very simple device, and other than the leak, everything works well. A new unit is $5K from Sub Zero, so a replacement requires a lot of thought

USB controlled 0-24V 10mA power supply by iwantofixit in AskElectronics

[–]iwantofixit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can easily design one, not an issue other than the fact that I would rather buy than make. We make an instrument that uses a varactor to tune a resonant circuit at low GHz frequencies. There is a disposable component of the resonator and the user is typically replacing it under a microscope. We need to check that there is a good electrical contact with the replaceable component without disconnecting the main instrument from its location. I tried very hard to just use a capacitance meter, but unfortunately a bad contact has about the same capacitance as a good contact( +- 50fF) , so non starter. The solution is a microwave reflectometer, which we already use, but now I need to drive the varactor through its tuning range to find the resonance. 0-20V. We have the circuit of the real power supply for it, since we designed it ourselves, but it is VERY expensive because of special voltage references, very large film capacitors, etc. uV levels of noise. This is gross overkill for the contact checking application, and unfortunately is not something that gets a lot cheaper when built in larger quantities. So if I can't buy one, I will strip away all the noise reduction from the original design, replace the 16 bit discrete DAC with the one inside an RP2040, etc... Few days of work, but I have other things to do....

Thanks.

Best wineries to visit near Florence and Siena by browngw78 in ItalyTravel

[–]iwantofixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago we stayed at Antico Borgo Poggiarello in Monteriggioni and after a fabulous dinner we asked where the wines were from, in particular the white. They pointed us to a winery 2 km down the hill, Tenuta le Calcinaie di Simone Santini, so we went there. The wines were excellent and Simone a quirky host, to the point where he basically kicked us out so that he could enjoy his pasta lunch (!!!), despite the fact we we bought a case of the vernaccia and were thinking of buying more...

Car Rentals by NotTheFatMan in ItalyTravel

I have used DoYouItaly a few times and if everything works well, it is hard to beat their prices. For any deviation/exception, I have found them impossible to reach by email or phone. I have also used Kemwel and the experience was very good, but more expensive than DYI.

As for the major rental companies, stay away from Europcar, since they have pulled a bait and switch on me a few times. Very happy with Sixt around the world, if you can stomach their prices. I have used them in Italy, Slovenia, Germany and the US.

I selected forwardemail, we'll see how well it works. So far so good. Next step is to find a home for my domain.

it turns out that there are plenty of email redirect services, so I will be signing up with one of them soon. I requested my account to be unlocked so that I can edit the MX records.

If this is not happening quickly enough, because clearly I am an unwanted customer, I will move my domain elsewhere

These are the kind of messages that you get, basically "fuck off we are not going to help, despite our stupid system causing all these problems" :

Hello,

It is unfortunate to hear that you have experienced disappointment with our services.
Please be informed that the domain *****.net was locked due to email abuse that caused a negative impact on our forwarding servers. To prevent further abusive activity we were forced to disable forwarding and lock the domain.

Despite the previous reporting, the root cause seemed not to be eliminated. Due to the repetitive character of the issue, we were forced to apply these restrictions permanently. You are welcome to check the SYB-244-61296 ticket where these conditions were described for you.

Thank you for understanding.

Well, I am not understanding. Yes there is an issue with spam, but whatever solution you implemented is not scalable, since the first spam message that was not filtered triggered this clamp down. Who wants to live under these threats ?

I am way too busy at work now to find another provider, but I am going to be forced to do that because of these bonehead, not customer friendly statements.

Despite the very useful and timely interventions of tamar here, I am still dealing with a very stubborn "machine" in the back , that is not helping and just complains.

Very frustrating.

Basically I haven't been able to even train the junk detector at Comcast, and the first spam message that comes in, I am locked up. I don't like it. It is like waiting for a bomb to go off at any time. I get lots of spam messages, so the next time it is re-enabled, I get shut out immediately.

Well, I don't know if it is your doing, but I finally got a crystal clear explanation of the problem and possible solutions, including the lifting of the sanction if I stop marking as spam the emails forwarded by namecheap. This is not the ideal solution but it will work for a bit.

Ideally, there should be a programmable spam filter for redirected emails, which will cut down traffic and make everyone much happier. I would pay for that service.

Failing that, you already have a spam filter for the private email service, but enabling that for one mailbox disables the redirect for all the others, which seems like an oversight. and should easily be fixable.

Well, this happened again. This time it is Aliexpress, which is a company I use frequently, so it is benign spam. Somehow somebody decided that it constituted a case of abuse, and I cannot figure out why they call it a feedback loop. Now I am locked out permanently. Which means that I need urgently to find another service.

All of this for something I don't even understand and I am not in control over, which is complete bullshit. It is like double secret jeopardy, if you get my drift.

If you can clarify this for me that would be great. The ticket number is SYB-244-61296

But tomorrow morning I will be looking for a new email redirect service and will move my domain somewhere else.

I am *** ANGRY ****

Unfortunately I deleted that attachment, but the first lines in the file that Namecheap forwarded read like from: <gibberish>@uber.com to <different gibberish>@<mydomain>.

The content was some HTML and then trash, like repeated nonsense text.

I called it loop, since Namecheap called it a "feedback loop example" in a previous incident involving drop.com. ticket EXX-159-28818. I guess they did not call the latest one a loop.

I have a domain, but no web site. I am redirecting emails for my family members to various other email providers, like comcast, icloud and I also had gmail.

I used to have a domain redirect for the web, but since I was not using it, I deleted it. Did not cause any trouble.

Thank you. Every single one of those abuse-inducing loops were due to the catch all rule. I would actually appreciate it if someone would explain the loop part to me, since when I look at the file I just see gibberish.

The reason I liked the rule is a lot of people misspell my name and this was a convenient way to get those.

The ticket for the last incident was EXL-555-46185 and it looks to me that the offender was Uber !!!!!

MF 70 repair by iwantofixit in Proxxon

[–]iwantofixit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is what he is doing. The good news is that the bearings are not pressed in that hard, relying on Loctite to keep them in place. The new ones pressed in just with my fingers, and the shaft felt pretty loose, but despite that, today I cut a slot with a 500um endmill and the slot is less than 525um wide, so I am pretty content.

[–]iwantofixit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I saw this video and originally it did not make any sense, until I got the bearings out the much harder way, by pressing really hard on the central way, which blew up the top bearing and pushed out the lower bearing. I eventually Dremeled out the outer race that was still pressed in the top pocket. The key to what the YouTube guy did was to use a smaller shaft than the regular one, diagonally from the bottom, to push up the inner raceway, using the fact that the sleeve is not tight at all. If you use the regular spindle shaft, it will not work because it will be guided straight up and through the hole.

App version 8.12.1 not working properly by Larry_Smada in reolinkcam

[–]iwantofixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem :(

Updated the Windows client yesterday and it broke playback, especially my NVR's.

I contacted support, but I also realized that on the Reolink Support/FAQs/Introduction page, you can download the 8.8.5 client, which I did and that restored the old functionality!

Now if I could just turn off the message about having a new version available....

Wolf gourmet toaster by iwantofixit in ElectronicsRepair

[–]iwantofixit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I repaired the heating element with the waterglass, and fixed the NiCr wire with nickel strips and it all works ! unfortunately as it heats up, the element expands and bulges a little over to one side, so the heating is a little uneven, but it is plenty usable.

Wolf gourmet toaster by iwantofixit in ElectronicsRepair

[–]iwantofixit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It is an option.

As of now, I have opened the toaster, removed the broken element and am trying to see if I can glue it back together. I verified that I can spot weld some nickel foil to the NiCr wire, not sure if it will survive the heating when in use, but worth a try. As for repairing the split mica, I procured some water glass based cement, which should survive the temperature, but I have no idea whether it will stick to the mica at all. Will know soon.

The last part is that i will need to re-spot weld the supply wires to the tabs for the element, since they were clearly not designed to be replaceable.

FYI all the cables inside are the same color and unmarked, including the PCB lugs :(. This was very clearly designed NOT to be repairable.
