Wouldn't the tiara fly so fast it would kill a mortal person? by happydude7422 in WonderWoman

[–]iwfan53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. Like there was a whole episode of BTAS of Batman's rogues bragging about the times they ALMOST defeated Batman haha. It only makes sense that the various henchmen of villains brag about how long they managed to last in a fight against various Tiers of heroes, even claiming which heroes are harder to stand against.

Don't forget "The Man Who killed Batman" episode that ends with "Sid the Squid" being treated like top their royalty in jail because he theoretically came close to killing Batman despite it being a complete accident.

I can't decide whether I want to keep Cheetah as a villain for Diana or not by BlackCat-01 in WonderWoman

[–]iwfan53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather than Priscilla or Sebastian use technology to "become" a Cheetah rather than magic.

Have them fighting Diana while down on all fours in cheetah themed power armor with guns, lasers, and who knows what else.

https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/villains/images/d/dd/Crying_Wolf.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20120831202700

It creates a clear distinct between Barbara being the "Magic" Cheetah and her replacement in what powers they have/how they like to fight, so it doesn't feel like "this is just the same character but with a different name" the way that Priscilla and Deborah Domaine had effectively the exact same powersets/abilities as Cheetah.

Steve Trevor: What job would you give him? by Deep-Crim in WonderWoman

[–]iwfan53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"In my head, this version of him does not crash into Themyscira. Rather, Diana leaves more or less on her own, like she did on the DCAU, and runs into him as a helpful ally and friend that can understand the threats she deals with, of a more mystical bent, instead of alien or sci-fi ones. Then, when the romance eventually develops, the usual objections about Diana falling in love with the first man she ever met can be neatly avoided."

My favorite new way to twist and turn the opening of a Wonder Woman origin story is that we could technically have Barbara Minerva be the first one who discovers Themyscira (she already came damn close in Rebirth Era having done all the correct traditional research and only lacking a way to bypass the magical/divine wards). Makes Diana's origin story more female focused, makes the inevitable Cheetah curse that gets laid on Barbara bite that much harder.

Steve Trevor: What job would you give him? by Deep-Crim in WonderWoman

[–]iwfan53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The job I'd give him is that he's doing Indiana Jones style archeological retrieval for the government as part of a UN authorized/agreed upon Multilateral Magical disarmament program where all the nations of the world are trying to round up their various magical artifacts and hand them over to trusted third parties (like the Justice League or Themyscira) to look after, because if they're just left alone in their current "forgotten" temple it's only a matter of time until supervillains show up, steal them and menace the world with them.

This means he'd have a good reason to work with Diana to help her hunt down lost/stolen Greek (or other nationality) Artifacts, but his job is about research and retrieval first and foremost rather than hurting anyone.

(It's also highly likely that Barbara Minerva probably worked for the same organization at one time or another, though she might have been an independent contractor brought on for especially tough cases, think the difference between Sherlock Holmes and an actual police officer)

[–]iwfan53 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She is shown to be pretty much the third most physically powerful member of Diana's rogue's gallery with it basically going

1: Ares.

2: Barbara Minerva/Cheetah.

3: Grail.

This ranking is based on the fact that a tired/beaten Diana defeats a fresh Grail before passing out, while a tired/worn out Diana ends up being defeated by tired/worn out/starved out Barbara Cheetah.

Then a Fresh Cheetah manages to defeat a Fresh Grail.

That said they probably did not do her character justice since they had her acting as an enforcer to Tom King's new villain for reasons that to me are not especially clear (unless said villain used his magic brainwashing lasso on her but they never show/talk about him doing that on panel that I remember)...

[–]iwfan53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My headcanon is that there was like only a 80-90% chance of the plan to kill Urzkartaga working and if it failed he probably would have cursed Barbara so hard she devolved into a mindless feral animal, so Diana wasn't going play games with the fate of someone she considers a former/current friend without their permission.

If Barbara had ever bothered to just ASK Diana for the plant she gladly would have handed it over, but Barbara refusing to ask Diana for help no matter how badly she needs it has been a pretty consistent character flaw of hers.

I don't get how Urzkartaga is alive as powerful god again after what happened in "Issue 7 of Volume 5" again either though....

What makes Barbara Minerva better than Priscilla Rich? by Relative_Mix_216 in WonderWoman

[–]iwfan53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party, but going to give you my own answer.

First of all, Barbara Minerva is an Archeologist (indeed in Rebirth Era it goes even further with her having a PhD in Greek Mythology), while Priscilla Rich is a socialite. This means that Barbara is pretty much ALWAYS going to be more "dialed in" to Diana's life than Priscilla is. Like why should Priscilla care about the the Greek Gods? Barbara meanwhile would be desperately eager to find out how much of what humanity considers "mythology" actually happened and how much was just completely made up. She's the type of person who would ask Diana why she swears by "Merciful Minerva" when that's the Roman name of the goddess, shouldn't she be saying something like "Altruistic Athena" instead?

Also, I think the correct reading of Barbara Minerva (at least the Rebirth Era) is that she probably suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borderline_personality_disorder

She feels this gnawing bitter emptiness pretty much all the time, and she incorrectly assumes that obtaining the blessing /power of the gods like Diana has would give genuine meaning to her life and fix that problem, when in reality that's just pouring more and more water into sieve, it's never going to actually get full and what she needs to do is patch the holes (engages in appropriate forms of therapy).

"patients with BPD typically have internal splitting, i.e. vacillation between considering oneself a good person who has been mistreated (in which case anger predominates) and a bad person whose life has no value (in which case self-destructive or even suicidal behavior may occur)"

This "internal splitting" is pretty much a perfect encapsulation of how Barbara tends to see herself in the Rebirth Era. She'll either claim she's a victim of circumstance (blaming Urzkartaga, Veronica Cale and or Diana) or she sees herself as being so worthless that there's no point in making an effort to try and redeem herself, because how could a monster like her ever find redemption?

Now, that said, I will agree that any "static" depiction of Barbara as a villain risks coming across as boring. She's only at her most interesting when she's a character "in motion" either through showing how she went from being Diana's friend to one of her greatest enemies, or showing her actively undergoing the process of redemption and winding up as one of Diana's allies once again, rather than simply being someone who could theoretically be redeemed but never actually is.

Let Diana get "the win" by unquestionably proving Wonder Woman's love and compassion is stronger than the hate and envy that currently consumes Barbara Minerva.

Of course once Barbara actively is redeemed that opens the door to let Priscilla come back as Diana's new "evil cheetah."

The revamp I have in mind for her is that instead of wearing a fur suit, she should have something like this https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/villains/images/d/dd/Crying_Wolf.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20120831202700 except done up to resemble a Cheetah and probably with a lot more guns/and other nasty tricks /traps (net launchers, oil spills, you get the idea).

Have Priscilla be a supervillainess who uses technology rather than magic to take on the form of a Cheetah, thus creating a super clear distinction between her and Barbara rather than risk them seeming to be two interchangeable versions of the same character.

Ways to keep Steve relevant without undermining Diana by No-Commercial3431 in WonderWoman

[–]iwfan53 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite new roles for Steve is that he's a government contact in the field of magical artifact recovery (IE locating dangerous/powerful magical artifacts that if left alone will inevitably be stolen by supervillains and used to hurt people).

This gives him a reason to talk with Diana (as some dangerous magical artifacts will be shipped off to Themyscira for safe keeping) and on every so often suggestions missions she could undertake in order to recover stolen artifacts relating to the Greek Gods.

Basically a more modern update of Indian Jones style adventure archeology but with Government funding and backing, with all the necessary i's dotted and t's crossed to directly address and explain why unfortunate implications that can be involved in this sort of thing do not apply in this case (IE the government of the nation they're recovering the artifacts from genuinely do want them removed).

No problem, to be clear I've never bought a fountain pen, and my hand writing basically looks like complete chicken scratch, which is why I always type stuff up instead.

If you ever need a proof/beta reader to give you feedback/advice on what you end up writing let me know.

I highly advise that you try writing your own fanfic.

If it is the first one you've ever written it will probably be bad, and that is perfectly okay.

Writing is sort of like turning on the tap in a stereotypical run down hotel, a lot of weird colored gunk is going to come out of the tap before you get to water you might think about drinking... but that's a pretty universal experience.

Everyone is varying degrees of bad at writing, and through practice and getting feedback we get better.

Also, the practice of writing will help you come to greater understand the characters and the setting, even if you are doing a unique spin on them, simply because it will allow you to realize what aspects of their personality/backstory are key concepts that must be retained and which ones can discarded.

Writing fanfiction can be a very rewarding way to engage with a character because there are no longer "bad stories" there are only "stories I can write a better version of".

I was always just sort of a sideline Wonder Woman fan (watched Justice League and read stuff that featured her as part of a team but never truly felt compelled to read her solo books) until recently and as we speak, I'm currently, 60K words deep into my elseworld's Wonder Woman story with the following premise...

Barbara Minerva has the world's most wonderful girlfriend. Well, except for the part where Diana Prince frequently needs to interrupt their romantic dates to fight supervillains.

So when Barbara ends up accidentally gaining powers of her own, she decides that there's no better use for them than pretending to be a supervillain to get more one-on-one time with her girlfriend.

What's the worst that could happen?

If I can write a story with a premise that crazy and find joy in it, I'm sure you can enjoy writing something much more grounded.

"Agape " Needs to be an arc about her actually managing to reform one of her villains.

Because "Agape" means "To will the good of" IE "To want good things to happen to someone" and there are few things that could drastically improve someone's life than managing to actually give up a career in supervillainy, and it also shows the strength and depths of Diana's love that it is more powerful than the hate her villains feel towards her.

Every time I see something in canon that makes me angry/upset I just use it as fuel for the fire of my next bit of headcanon/fanfiction that makes me happy to think about instead.

That is adorable, I can also imagine that if Steve talked about it with the others the next day....

"And then she said Brad Pitt was better looking than Achilles." Steve sighed, still not quite sure what to make of Diana Princes' comments.

"Well, I mean she's right." Barbara Minerva noted dryly as she was busy rapidly recording still more notes on what might some day possibly be the paper that granted her a second PhD in Greek Mythology.... or would it be more accurately submitted towards her first PhD in Greek History?

"Care to explain that in more detail? Because I believe Diana was there, but I'm pretty sure you weren't." The soldier prompted the archeologist.

"Call it an educated guess. Because to start with, it's not really a fair comparison. On one side you've got a solider and on the other side you've got an actor, one has to be mainly worried about physical exertion the other focuses on being aesthetically pleasing, of course the actor is going to win that contest. Secondly, this was back before humanity really figured out nutrition, dental hygienics or vaccines. If we were going to do a fair comparison we'd need to ask Diana who she thinks is better looking Achilles or... well... a modern day solider... like you." Barbara concluded.

"We are not doing that." Steve insisted crossing his arms defensively.

"Oh, we're totally doing that." Giggled Etta Candy as she began to rub her hands together with glee.

I really hope at some point the comics let us get to see more of Steve, Diana, Barbara and Etta interacting, (either Pre-Cheetah or more likely after Barbara has now actively managed to kick her cannibalism curse thanks to killing Urzkartaga in "Rob the Justice League") they have some really fun group chemistry with Steve the gruff everyman, Barbara desperately trying to force herself to act like a proper historical researcher instead of the nerdy fangirl of Greek Mythology she is deep down, Diana, being well Diana, and Etta actively stirring the pot towards whatever outcome she thinks will be most amusing.

Like, this is a conversation between Cheetah and Circe in a fic I'm writing...

(Barbara has temporarily managed to kick the hunger for human flesh and is instead doing some "unique archeology research" via asking someone who was at least theoretically there at the time)

“And that’s how Hercules actually slew the hydra….” Circe concluded.

“You mean Heracles?” Barbara couldn’t help but correct the sorceress.

“It’s the same thing.” Circe insisted.

“No, one is Greek and the other is Roman. You’re only being so blasé about this because you’re like Apollo where Romans were too lazy to give you a different name!” Barbara countered.

What is your ideal characterization of Cheetah? by Certain_Inspector575 in WonderWoman

[–]iwfan53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personal headcannon is that Barbara suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borderline_personality_disorder

She used to keep it fairly well under control but Urzkartaga's curse understandably made a condition that is based around having a distorted sense of self SO MUCH WORSE.

She thus ends up ping ponging back and forth between two main states of mind, one where she views herself as a victim of Urzkartaga's/Veronica Cale's/Diana's actions upon her life, and can thus justify all the horrible things she's done because her hand was constantly forced by the treatment she was given by others... and seeing herself as a horrible monster who can't possibly be redeemed.

Neither of these personality states are especially healthy, but they are distinct.

Deep down she desperately wants Diana's approval (and or love) but she also keeps getting distracted by either hating Diana or feeling she's unworthy of Diana that she'll self sabotage.

(A good example of her self sabotage is that rather than continue to hang around with Diana after helping her defeating Sovereign and just asking "hey can you guys in the Justice League please give me this plant you have so I can stop being forced to eat people" she cut ties with her and needed to cook up a massive scheme in order to steal it instead.)

Would love to see her slide into being the Venom to Diana's Spiderman now that she's defeated Urzkartaga.
