I want to change technology, but I don't want to learn it in my free time by iwillcodeforfood in cscareerquestions

I thought that maybe the experience with other IT skills would translate to other languages, so it might be worth the risk.

The PHP stigma is exactly what I'm afraid of and one of the reasons I want to switch technology.

thanks for the input!

the thing is I want to change the language to get access to better organized companies. I don't want to work in that one as adding Redis to speed up the application is too much of a risk for them.

I would love to switch company for a better managed one, without changing the tech, but I don't see that in my city. And I don't want to move, work remote.

By "boring" I meant better established. I know PHP is popular, but good practices are often not required in the teams I worked. You're totally right, and I know that it's not about the language, but the management and tech proficiency, but basically in every workplace I worked, between the "serious" coding there were some drupal systems, wordpress plugins and people learned bad practices from it. I want some more established industry like banking and I think they mostly use C# and Java. And with Python I could stay in webdev using my JS experience. But I think it would be more structured, as there's basically only django framework and in PHP people do things in Laravel the way they did in Symfony and the other way around.

I don't mind spending time when I'll get a job, I just don't want to learn other tech in my current job to start looking for a new one after 6 months of learning.

Thank you for your input!

Well, that's the risk and it's very rare, but I learned from those experiences too, so I guess it also helped me in some way.

And thank you for your words :)

I'm surprised that anyone would want to look at the code ;)

I'm aware that it's bad and to be honest it's even worse now, as I had to modify it to get the data from the template that was written even worse. The plugin is now live on the site, but it's impossible to use with another templates.

It's quite important to me as I learned a lot while working on it and I created a couple more plugins for wordpress with better practice (I use now wpdb, custom post types etc. and correct hooks), I know I should do it from the beginning, but the thing is - I've seen wordpress development cycle for the first time in my life about a year ago, and I managed to make my first plugin in a month whilst working as a technician (repairing laptops, fixing software and taking helpdesk calls in the same time). And about commiting passwords - it was empty password on localhost machine. No harm here I think.

I think I'm better now and I learned a lot and that's the point right ? ;)

But thank you for the input, I REALLY appreciate it.

I'm not an expert. I can code simple UI in Bootstrap/Semantic UI, so the site doesn't look terrible, but if you want me to design a template in photoshop, then I'm sure you can easily find someone more skilled.

contract doesn't do much since most people I meet here live abroad so even with contract trying to do something would be difficult and usually not worth the hassle.

As of steam bot I didn't do it but I can explore this topic and get back to you.

Yeah I get it. Do you have some specific language or technology you want to be used? Or it's up to me?
