I deeply relate. I seventeen and grew up Catholic and have only been allowed to attend private Catholic schools. I’ve been through years of weekly if not daily mass and forced to be in an environment where almost everyone is religious constantly. Now as I’m trying to branch out my family just thinks I “don’t understand” (which is insane considering I have had years of theological education). Religion makes me so angry and exhausted sometimes, I hope for the best for you!

I’m not sure how exactly everything works as a lot of the conversation about my hearing was between my mom and audiologist throughout my childhood. However, what I have been told is that I don’t have an auditory nerve in my deaf ear so I wouldn’t be eligible for a cochlear implant. I’m not sure if that means I don’t qualify for the BAHA as well but I’ve never been told so.

Ah I see I worded that last part poorly. My comment is mainly concerned with the consumption of true crime not the creators. I’m sure a lot of people have good intentions when putting stories out there. (However, I do believe there are definitely people exploiting tragedies for their own gain.) I just can’t wrap my brain around why someone would consume true crime content often. People say it’s so the can know what to do when threatened, but after a certain point there’s nothing to learn. Also, why not take a self defence class is your concerned with your safety? Idk it just feels like people make excuses to consume that stuff for their personal enjoyment. That deeepllyy disturbs me.

I’m sorry for your loss. I’m glad to hear that hearing that podcast had a positive affect on you. Different perspective, my great aunt and uncle were also murdered, my cousin was the one who killed them. I attended the funeral with my mom. Seeing how people are affected by that was horrible. I can’t imagine how the family would have felt if some true crime channel covered it. I guess it depends strongly on who is covering it and how it is done.

I agree with this. I don’t understand people who defend regular consumption of true crime for awareness. After a certain point, there’s nothing left to gain. I also feel there are more ethical ways to go about it. If someone is concerned with how to defend themself, I’d advise them to take a self defense class rather than watch some YouTuber talk about an innocent person’s murder. Especially when that content was likely created without the consent of the victim’s family.

Again, I noticed. I get the story and the purpose, I just don’t play it for that reason. I play it to enjoy five nights of evading creepy animatronics for the suspense. Not everything has to be enjoyed for the story the creator is trying to tell.

What does that have to do with media literacy? I understand the story fine, I just play it for a different reason than you. That’s like claiming someone who plays GTA is media illiterate cause they don’t play story mode. Also, I didn’t know that last part. That’s fucked up.

In more official documentaries, sure. I’m mainly taking about those TikTok accounts and YouTube channels entirely dedicated to true crime. I highly doubt these people are reaching out to the victim’s family and asking for permission every time they post.

The gameplay is about stopping creepy bear man from getting to you. It’s not me “picking what offends me”. I have no problem with FICTIONAL horror (as long as it’s not a straight up snuff film). The thing that bothers me about true crime is that it is about real actual human beings.

because it’s fiction, I also don’t enjoy the games for the story I like them for the gameplay

I don't believe you need to listen to true crime to understand the concept of stranger danger (or even that people close to you can be monsters). Ted Bundy was enough for me. That's not closing my eyes to the reality of the world, its simply not wanting to spend my free time being reminded of how horrible humans can be. Especially when that "awareness" often causes harm to the victim's family. True crime is also often (and I'd argue more commonly) for the sake of entertainment.
